10 things I hate about you inspired au that I will never write but want to share
Byler
Henderhop
past bychance / Mike-Will-Chance love triangle
2000s setting
No upside down
Story starts in september 2006, first day of school after the summer.
No money or bets involved!!! I dont like that trope.
Will Byers
Popular but for bad reasons: Was kidnapped at 12 by Henry and went missing for a week, titled “zombie boy” because people assume he now has aids, later outed because he and Chance we’re caught, known as the queer kid.
Friends are Jane, Lucas and Max.
In Hoppers custody after Joyces death, Joyce was killed by Henry while she helped rescue Will, Hopper and Joyce were already married, he fought for custody and won against Lonnie.
Will and Chance dated for about half a year in secret before they were caught making out, they we’re forced to break up even though they had just started falling in love. Now 4 months later they still like eachother but no longer talk.
Hopper always hated the idea of his kids dating and discouraged it, after finding out Will had dated Chance in secret and was now outed to the entire town he officially made “no dating until college” a rule.
When Chance asked Will to try again (4 months post breakup) Will refuses at first because he’s too scared to disobey Hoppers rule. Instead he decides to beg Hopper to please change the rule because he loves Chance and boys like him don’t get a lot of romantic opportunities.
This turns into an argument. According to Hopper Chance only has bad intentions and Will is naive and has been manipulated by him (related to Wills trauma with Henry). To end the argument Hopper changes the rule to Will only being allowed to date once Jane dates someone.
Will has always had very good grades, however he’s struggling with french. Hes behind and is bound to fail french this year if he doesnt get back on track. Lucky for him the boy who just moved from canada and is fluent in french is veryyy eager to help.
Will and his new friend (and tutor) Mike try to find Jane a boyfriend so Will and Chance can get back together. Between tutoring and meddling Mike and Will grow closer, and Will slowly develops feelings for Mike instead.
Jane Hopper
Rescued and adopted by Hopper from a neglective household, Hopper found her while searching for clues about Henry. She had matted hair that had to be shaved off, never went to school and barely made contact with the outside world.
Popular for bad reasons: People have heard rumours about her backstory, first showed up to school with short hair (rumoured to be a lesbian, “it runs in the family”) and was socially stunted, quickly labelled as the weird girl.
Her only friends are Will and Max and she’s friendly with Lucas because he’s Maxs boyfriend, but theyre not friends.
Has no interest in dating because she doesn’t believe anyone could even like her, she has never felt anything romantic for anyone before and she has been slightly manipulated by Hopper to see dating as something dangerous.
One day her brother asks her to tag along to a meeting for “hellfire club” which his new friend is in. Reluctantly she accepts, but happy that her brother has a new friend. Surprisingly she quite enjoys herself there, surrounded by people who are almost as weird as her.
When the leader of the club Dustin Henderson starts talking to her she is very confused, but she likes his company enough to befriend him. She thinks its weird that her face heats up and her stomach twists around him “in embarrassment”, because she usually feels very confident to be herself around him and the rest of the club.
When Dustin asks her out her first instinct is to reject him, why would her stance on dating suddenly change? Just as shes about to she stops and realises that maybe, with a boy like Dustin, she could give it a try. She tries to convince herself she’s only doing this for her brother, but deep down she knows that she really really likes this boy.
Mike Wheeler
New kid at hawkins high, moved from canada with his family.
Mike befriends his neighbour Lucas Sinclair immediately, he helps him find his place. As a fellow overachiever Lucas suggests that Mike should sign up to be a tutor for extra credit, he tells him he knows a guy who could use a french tutor.
Mike refuses at first, during his short time in hawkins he’s already heard plenty unpleasant things about this Will Byers. Extra credit is great, but theres better ways to gain it than talking to a wall. Lucas explains that he knows Will, and that he’s actually a great guy and that the only rumour thats true is that Will is gay.
This sparks Mikes interest immediately. He has known he’s gay for a little while now, after a great battle with internalised homophobia. He’s deeply closeted and has never really met another gay person before, desperate for a gay friend he accepts to tutor Will immediately.
The need for a gay friend dies quickly when he meets Will for the first time and finds out that he’s exactly his type, especially when he sees Wills bunny teeth peek out while smiling. During the first tutor session Mike attempts to subtly ask Will out. Will notices but believes Mike doesn’t actually have a crush on him, he thinks Mike just picked the first gay guy he met to have a crush on. He rejects Mike by telling him hes not allowed to date. A lie/half truth, the rule has been changed already. That goes unsaid for now though.
Later Will feels bad about not telling the full truth and Mike finds out the truth about the rule change. Will explains he’s still in love with his Chance and that he doesn’t think Mike actually liked him. Mike thinks thats just an excuse and that Will is too kind to say that he’d rather date Chance, but the power of Wills pouty face is strong so he decides to get over it and help Will wingman his sister. Starting by asking Lucas if he knowns anyone likely to want to date Jane.
Dustin Henderson
Leader of Hellfire club after the death of Eddie Munson, who ODed about a year ago. A lot of members have left since then, so when Lucas invites his new friend Mike to the club he’s thrilled.
Dustin has been crushing on Jane for a while. Jane is beautiful, a weirdo (positive), clearly a very fast learner and very kind. Unfortunately she’s not allowed to and clearly not interested in dating, as Dustin learned from Lucas.
When Mike starts inviting his friend Will and his sister Jane to meetings it becomes a problem.
Dustin discusses this with Lucas, who tells him that he learned from Mike who learned from Will that Jane actually is allowed to date now. Obviously Dustins goal now is to win Jane over, a difficult thing to achieve.
With the help of Mike, Will, Lucas and Max he plans to ask Jane out. He notices theres something going between Will and Mike, and decides to bring it up to Jane. Together he and Jane plan to get Will to realise his feeling for Mike, the only obstacle is that Will isn’t allowed to date unless Jane does. (And Chance of course, but they’re not aware of that). Dustin knows a solution though.
Chance Lawson
Doesn’t really get shit for being gay due to his jock status and because people believe that Will forced him to date him, Chance doesn’t confirm nor deny this.
Is also fake-dating Jennifer Hayes, who’s crushing hard on Max Mayfield. They’re dating to avoid rumours about either of them being queer. She tells him to ask Will out again. A secret relationship worked before, and now that people think Chance is with Jennifer there will be less suspicion.
Chance is still very much in love with Will, so he takes her advice and asks Will to try again. Will informs him of the new rule Hopper has created, but he doesn’t tell him he’s going to ask to get it changed because he doesn’t want to get Chances hopes up. Will also doesn’t tell Chance about the rule change, just in case it doesnt work out well. Though when the possibility of Jane getting a boyfriend is getting very high, he still doesn’t tell Chance.

will couldve gotten a super cool hot jock who secretly loves nerdy stuff and tries to act chill around will but cant, with a side of religious guilt and the need to make will happy all time who also probably hates mike wheeler bc he definitely should. he couldve gotten a guy who chooses him first but Will also drives him insane bc hes so gosh darn pretty and handsome and amazing and smart and other variables.
but hey i dont make the rules
yes we got rebelwise, but imagine if we'd actually had rebelwise
where they get to talk about being queer and what that means - not crushes, not tammy's and mike's and vickie's - but what being queer actually means in actuality.
will confessing to how his father treated him, to how that made him afraid being queer meant being weak, and robin telling him that it's strong.
robin throwing a punch at a homophobe who makes a comment about will because he deserves someone standing up for him.
teaching will that he doesn't owe anyone a coming out, but he should get to do it on his own terms, to the people he trusts the most.
exploring queer expression together, trying alternative styles, listening to bowie, figuring out together what being queer means to them
talking to each other about their worries - hate crimes, the aids crisis, small town indiana, and the risks that come with that
being queer is more than who you like, and i wish we could have seen how that affected these two

heyy not the same anon but i wanted to answer to the person whose ask about willows characterization making her a complete different person to will you just answered. i personally hc that she isnt specially masculine or tough, but she was never bothered to try and fit social norms and expectations and thats why she was somewhat outted and bullied as a young girl in a similar way to how will was treated. she was always soft spoken and quiet and sensitive, an introverted creative kid like will. she liked her hair long and girly fairy dresses but she also never got around to learning how to do make up and feels like the odd one out when she realizes all the other girls started doing it every day for school in 9th grade. she really really doesnt want to shave her legs even though she feels intense pressure to do it from her environment so she just starts hiding her legs more instead. she likes the cure much more than madonna and loves wearing the band tshirts she gets from jonathan. so many little things that arent a big deal to her until everyone around her scrutinizes them and she has no explanation for them. but all the random girls wanting to give her a make over say its so she can appeal to men and the idea of having to deal with rejecting guys trying to get with her at a party or doing anything with them repels her so she finds solace in being misunderstood and not performing attraction to men (which she deeply associates with putting effort into looking like a traditionally attractive girl). this leads to rumours about her sexuality and all that shit. i do think michelle does force herself to seem as normal as possible and puts a lot of effort into looking like all the other girls and dating men in a similar way to how mike tries to appear straight and be "as normal as possible in canon". of course this also leads to her not knowing wtf to do around willow and ends up fucking things up with her as often as mike.
but yeah overall i find it very odd when people try to place these characters so absolutely into fem or masc boxes because it is often not that simple. and gender expression, specially when you are young and queer in a patriarchal and heteronormative environment, can be so intricately linked to social expectations that they would very likely change if you genderswap.
also i will say, i do think this fandom has a tendency to characterize will as very fem and weak when he is canonically a rock snob who knows how to use a gun really fucking well. and i dont want to place gender stereotypes onto those things but, for example, i dont think will would like girly mainstream pop music and while it is totally fine to hc that he would there is a lot of insistency on things like that and, idk, the whole "he is exclussively a bottom and that is the absolute truth" thing as if they were canon that seem to me like changing the character for it to fit the "sensible gay man" stereotype as much as making willow be totally different from will to fit the "butch lesbian" stereotype when i dont think either of them would align with those that much.
also, adding on the the willow and bullying thing, i think it is important to address the fact that girls are expected to put much more active effort into being feminine (shaving, wearing make up, curling/straightening hair, suffering through wearing heels, having very girly and knit bags/accessories even backpacks to school, etc.) when to seem like an average man you literally just have to throw in a tshirt and some jeans and call it a day. of course i dont want to diminish non masculine mens struggles with all the shit they go through sorry if it seemed like it at any point. my point is that willow wouldnt have to be masculine in order to not be considered feminine enough.
but yeah sorry for the essay dump i just threw in here i find this very interesting. but yeah this is just my opinion please feel free to disagree with whatever.
OH one hundred per cent i agree with pretty much everything you said here this makes so much sense to me
this really adds to the whole will being canonically fem discourse bc i feel like a lot of people embrace that but then add things on that they personally think are feminine. e.g. his music taste etc despite him having a canon music taste. bc yeah its so much more complicated than fem vs masc and i want ppl to realise that SOOO badly but alas
a homosexual vs his biggest opp
Mike Wheeler at the gay club
I think it's really just about the harsh reminder that straight people don't understand that Steve not getting to be with Robin and Will not getting to be with Mike are in absolutely no way the same thing.
my personal headcannon is that vickie became a nurse to help gay men who were being refused treatment for aids. she initially planned to move to a bigger city, with a larger queer community, but she did training in Hawkins and saw one person die of aids and decided then and there that she would stay. because if she didn't help her community in her small town then who would?
so she became a nurse in Hawkins, and she stayed a candy striper for years because she didn't want pay for what was basically just trying to keep homophobia out of the hospital. she snook in people's partners for last goodbyes, and sat with those who had no accepting family to be with them for their last breaths. she cornered will and gave him the safe sex talk as soon as he came out and made steve make his sex ed as inclusive as possible, because she couldn't handle one of those kids ending up in one of her hospital beds.
and she did all of this without coming out, without finding a wider community past the tiny one in her hometown that she found herself at the heart of. for a long time, the only people that knew she was queer were six feet under mearge days after she told them.
vickie dunne was the queer nurse that made all the difference when it mattered.
I giggle a little when I see someone having to mischaracterise Will to be able to hate him
