Theory for why Byler was not endgame

So, Stranger Things has a theme of “subverting expectations” this can be seen through Hopper subverting the stereotype of “small town cop who is incredibly useless” or subverting the expectation of Steve and Robin to get together. Or even having the “outcast drug dealer” turn out to be the hero of the story with Eddie.

Maybe with Byler they were trying to subvert the stereotype of “guy gets superpowers and also gets the girl” (or in this case guy!)

But even then it doesn’t really make sense because Will doesn’t really get superpowers but is rather siphoning them through Vecna.

I don’t know.. it’s still a really shoddy theory and I would love some help refining it! :) it just feels unsatisfying and I would have rather had byler be endgame, but if it isn’t I would at least like to figure out the thought process.

they haven't particularly shown great storytelling have they with this, vickie disappearing, will being at a gay bar?? no reasons for the twelve kids or the clock imagery, the mindflayer not being explained at all, everyone being unharmed regardless of the situation...
