30. Personal Assistant to The Mayor. Bedeviled

Leo walked out of his office planning on asking Dawn about lunch when he saw her gawking at the ring.  Maybe it had been too much, maybe he should have gone with earrings instead.  It didn’t have a diamond but maybe she mistook at as a proposal.  She had been acting differently around him lately.  Had he accidentally scared her off?

“Do you have to run that errand right now?” he asked frowning.  “I’d like to have a chance to talk to you.  I feel like we haven’t properly talked since Christmas.”  He paused for a moment to gather his thoughts and figure out the words he was looking for.  “The ring, was it too much?  Do you not like it?  I probably could return it.  I could get you earrings instead or a bracelet or another necklace.”

Dawn straightened up as Leo spoke, allowing her arms to rest by her side. “Oh, no” she shook her head, “No I don’t need to run off right now.” For a brief moment she was nervous about what he wanted to talk about but things changed rather quickly as he asked about the ring, even insisting he should have gotten something else for her. Though she didn’t want to breathe a sigh of relief she thought about it. It was almost comforting to hear the nervousness behind his voice. Of course she hadn’t truly thought it to be a proposal or anything, she had still been a bit nervous. Rings just always seemed so serious. 

“The ring, no.” she repeated. Of course her repeating things was never any help, but it was just a habit that came with several years with the job. “No, it wasn’t too much.” her eyes traveled down to her hand once more. “I actually quite love it, it’s beautiful, and the necklace to match. Leo I know I didn’t say much at first but I love it. It was rather unexpected, but.. it’s still lovely.”

Dawn couldn’t stop gawking at the ring Leo had given her for Christmas. Upon receiving it from him she was of course incredibly thankful of the gift but all the same it was a ring.. how was one supposed to react to that? It wasn’t like he gave it to her directly, separately. It was accompanied by the beautiful necklace of course, which she also donned around her neck. But the ring - she couldn’t look away. If there were a free moment in the office she was staring at it or twirling it around her right ring finger, which, she had hoped it wasn’t bad she was wearing it there and not the other ring finger. Was this any kind of promise ring? Dawn couldn’t help but wonder, in the most anxious of ways, of course, or perhaps it was just a ring, a gift. Whatever it was it made her nervous. 

It wasn’t until she felt a presence behind her that she looked up, Leo emerging from his office. “Oh,” she got up, “Lunch is on the way, they just called with the update. And uh,” she looked down at her notepad briefly before looking back at the mayor. “The conference room is reserved for this afternoon’s meeting, and I’ll actually be back from the errand I have to run so I will be there.” | @lionmayor

Zeus scrunched up his nose, shook his head slowly. “Don’t really feel like doing that to myself, no,” he said with a heavy dose of fake regret. “Sure your mom was lovely, though; what charity are proceeds going to, though? Kids? Cancer?” It was a good time of the year to make wild donations for the publicity, and at a public forum like this it was bound to make a story.

Dawn had spent the evening sighing over the naysayers and smiling and chatting up the ones willing to give and try the beverage. Honestly she didn’t care either way how people felt about it. She was working for the Mayor’s office and well, she couldn’t say no to him, or the kids. She did nod at his question. “The proceeds do go to kids, not kids with cancer, but kids without homes. It’s going to an organization which oversees a strand of orphanages here in the city, it’s a small organization, they don’t like to overcrowd their spaces and they’d like to give the children nice gifts for Christmas. Every penny goes towards those purchases, there’s no funny business happening on the inside with it.”

“That’s a rather boastful claim, though I’m willing to put it to the test,” Marie offered with a quick smile.  “Also, if we get a vote on the charity, I’d like mine to go to something for kids.”

“I can tell you first hand that this charity is for children right here in New York City, at least the charity tonight. Every few nights of the market we like to change it up a bit and pick new charities, but tonight’s funds are going to a group that oversees a few orphanages, to ensure the kids get a proper Christmas.” Dawn explained as she prepared a cup for the woman. “And really I wouldn’t lie about hot chocolate, of course I may be biased but I’m also honest.” She reached over, handing the cup to her, “And don’t you lie about how it is either, I do appreciate any feedback. Though it is a pass down recipe I’m always hoping to improve it.”

“It’s absolutely wonderful,” Ella said with a sigh. “I’m glad to hear that the money is going to a good cause. I’ll buy two cups if that’s alright with you. Three if you want to take a minute and drink one with me.”

“Oh, three?” Dawn asked, raising a brow at the woman. Of course she had already had a cup herself earlier, but if the woman was offering and Dawn simply couldn’t turn down one offering to give a little extra to charity. Dawn Bellwether certainly had her past but at the same time charity for children wasn’t something she could turn down. “I mean, if you insist. I really can’t say no to someone willing to give a little extra. And, well, I wouldn’t hate a short break to enjoy another cup myself. Thank you.” As she went on she prepared the cups, “Is the second one for someone else? Or I could combine them into one larger cup if you’d just prefer more. I’m only asking because if it’s for someone else then I can just prepare two for now and give you the third one before you set off so it doesn’t get cold?”

“Well, I have to admit I’m more of an office assistant, not a sales person so yeah, I’m using a lot of words because I guess I feel the need to remind everyone why they need it.”

“Well if you ask me, it’s the best hot chocolate in the city. For the sake of allergies, though I do have to fully disclose that the secret ingredient is cinnamon. It’s an old recipe from my mom, oh and every proceed for each cup is going to a local charity - the mayor has several we’re planning on working with this holiday season.”

“Why does Christmas shopping always have to be such a hassle?”

“I couldn’t agree more. I always say I’m going to shop earlier in the year for my friends and family but here I am, making last minute lists a few weeks before Christmas... Some things will never change.”

“That’s what I’ve heard,” she nods, with a small smile. “Though, I do have friends who have been in the city for several years now. I expect they’ll help me to adjust as well as they’re able to,”

“That’ll help for sure, it’s a much better adjustment when you know people. Clothing layers are about to be your new best friend,” she chuckled softly. “And a nice coat. I used to just choose any old thing but I finally spent a bit on a nice one and it does well to keep me warm.”

“You know, I’ve never seen snow before,” a pause, as she smiles. “Not in person, at least.”

“You are certainly in for quite the experience, then..” Dawn replied to the other woman with a slow nod. She wasn’t sure if she was so excited for the snow herself, but she could appreciate the holiday spirit. “It snows quite a bit here. I mean, we don’t necessarily get blizzards, but some winters gets a bit treacherous.”

“Don’t worry, I completely understand what you’re saying.  They’re my cats and even I like some time away from them.  It’s nice to be able to have some time out in public and also to have a moment when we don’t have to worry about the cats coming and begging for attention.”

Dawn couldn’t help but laugh softly. “Oh I’ll compete with the cats any day for some attention.” she teased with a playful grin, her eyes looking up at Leo with such fondness. “Which, speaking of...” she stepped back the slightest bit, taking his hand and leading him out onto the floor for a dance, the music playing with a slower tune now. “Let’s finally dance.” Once they were out she wrapped an arm around his neck, and the other around his waist as she brought herself closer to him. He wasn’t that much taller than her, especially when she opted out of wearing the heels, so she leaned her head against his shoulder, her face facing inward so he could still hear her speaking. “This is nice..”

“It’s okay.  You’re just excited, can’t blame you.  We’ve never been able to do anything like this before,” he said shaking his head.  He set down his drink and gave her a kiss before going with her to dance.  “It’s a nice change isn’t it?  Getting to go out instead of spending all our time together in with the cats?”

Leo was right. They never had the opportunity to be out like this in public, Dawn so openly affectionate and even Leo was coming out of his shell a bit with her. She did like it. “And it feels so right.” Dawn took the last big sip of her drink before leaning in quickly so he could kiss her. Once they were out on the dance floor, she pulled herself closer to him. “Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love the cats. Really they’re a lot of fun, and the house is so much cozier with all of them. But I will say being able to go out on the town is a very nice change, yes.”

Leo still wasn’t used to going out in public with Dawn or at least going out to non-professional things together.  It was nice to be able to not worry about how people would react or if they were standing too close together or acting too intimate.  At the same time thought it was weird not having to worry about any of those things.  Dawn seemed even more beautiful tonight as she relaxed and allowed herself to have a good time.  He had been taking a sip from his drink when she pulled him up to dance.  “Just a second, dear.  Let me set this down first.”

“Oh, right, sorry - of course!” Dawn nodded, stepping back to give Leo a bit more space, room to get up as he sat his glass down onto the table. As she waited she paused to look back at him, a smile across her lips. It was incredibly weird, being out with him, in a bar and not for an event. It was weird but it was a good weird, it was a weird the young woman could get used to. Of course she’d still worry about the looks, but all the same, in this moment she was too happy to worry about what anyone might have to say about this.

A night out was just what Dawn needed. After everything had been an absolute mess over the last couple of weeks at the city offices with the chaos that had unfolded at the annual Halloween event, she needed to let go and attempt to enjoy herself out and about. She had considered staying in, suggesting a quiet night in with Leo but at the same time she couldn’t spend another night cooped up any longer. Despite the fact that she had to work in the morning loomed over her, she downed a shot before looking next to her at Leo who had been sipping on his drink. Dawn would be lying if she said she wasn’t a bit drunk, especially because sober Dawn wouldn’t necessarily do what she was about to do. Drunk Dawn didn’t have many fears. She pushed herself away from the bar as the music blast throughout the bar and smiled widely at Leo. “Come on, dance with me!” she said before taking his arm and pulling him out onto the floor.
