"I don't know what heaven has in store for me" —Chataubriand, René
things found in old books :
Vaguely threatening christian leaflet tucked into a volume of Chateaubriand contining Atala, René, and Le dernier Abencérage.
Annotations in Hans Krahe's Historische Laut- und Formenlehre des Gotischen.
things found in old books:
Most of the books I bought in Rome were Latin or Italian. But the first one I got (from an amazing secondhand shop near La Sapienza university) was full of treasures form all over: an address in Austria, a scrap of paper with the book's original price in Swiss francs, and a business card from London that says, as near as i can make out, "enjoi it my l. Herman". I feel like considering all these things together would lead Poirot to uncover the murderer's identity.
put aside fear of death and stop dreading its menace —Statius, Silvae II.183

things found in old books : the annotations and doodles in my (very well-read) copy of Sartre's La nausée.
I'm not an annotator as I find it distracting for re-reading. I've passed over a lot of secondhand books for having too many scribblings. But one of the perks of buying foreign language books in English speaking countries is that the annotations usually stop after the first ~20 pages.
