GREEN UNPLUGGED : getting her face painted w. @bejinyoung
look, was she probably too old for face paint? definitely. but she was running out of things to do at this festival while she waited for nana, her beloved, to take stage with her back up singer, june or whatever that dude’s name was. simply, she was here for the women, despite most of the line up being men (derogatory). and too perform, but she’d already taken to the open mic stage. plus, the line for face painting had been non-existent when she had come across the stand so why not? secretly she really just wanted a butterfly on her face because it looked sick.
but, of course, miyeon was not afforded a quiet minute alone to get her face painted with a blue butterfly, as her very own dance instructor appeared, out of nowhere, looking a lot more chipper than he usually did in class. she went to run, her instinct being to escape a possible scolding, but was stuck in the chair as the artist continue to work. “hello sir” she said politely to jinyoung as he approached her. why did it feel like the painter suddenly started working slower as soon as he showed up?
GREEN UNPLUGGED : open mic solo - performing je t’aime in this outfit
COUNT : 512 words
she’s been on stage before, so she thinks she knows what she is doing as she steps on stage. miyeon is prim and proper, stiff back and. she did this hundreds of times in her youth. if nine year old miyeon can do this and win awards, surely the woman now double her age can do the same and get a call from at least one agency, right? “hello” she said into the microphone once she reached center stage. the crowd is quiet, anticipating the next performer. this stage was carved fort the amateurs—which is what she is now. once a seasoned performer at the age of 10, now a wannabe trying to make it like everyone else. hopefully, she didn’t look as nervous as she was.
interacting with the crowd is important. she had seen the artists before her, chatting and joking with the crowd. it made a performance more personal and memorable. she wondered how the professionals did it. “have you all been enjoying the festival?” is the best she can come up with on the spot. an moderate eruptions of cheers followed. she smiles, “i have as well.” not exactly true. she had attended for the open mic as it was a good chance to get some stage practice and to see nana in the flesh. she thought about preparing lilac or flu, but felt that might be a little too on the nose. and the fear of not being able to do a cover of the song justice with the original artist in ear shot was simply terrifying. “i’ll be performing je t’aime, originally by joy-sunbaenim.” she introduced and added, “please enjoy” before the backing music queued.
now that she stood alone on stage, she wondered if she should have choreographed a dance or played guitar—not that she was capable of doing either. but she should be doing something. it couldn’t be enough just to stand there and sing. so, she tried to add a little flavor to her performance. she smiled, moved around the stage, made eye contact with the audience. the song was a sweet love song, so she tried to match her expressions and body to it. the song was a lot different than her typical attitude, so it took some acting to sell it. but she could with relative ease. even with the amount of self-doubt she carried, miyeon knew she was gifted with natural beauty that was still on the cute side.
she ended her performance in a similar way to the live video she had used for inspiration, but with a slight adjustment. instead of holding her hand out to touch rain, she went up the very edge of the stage and held out her hand to the audience member closest to the stage. she grabbed their hand and as the music faded, said the last line, in terrible french, right in the eyes of the chosen audience member. she gave them a thankful smile and hoped they weren’t too terribly embarrassed. with the song ended, she went back to the center of the stage and bowed respectfully and said to the crowd, “let’s all remember this moment together forever, yeah?” and waved goodbye as she walked off the stage.
