Although I deleted the reblog of Benedict’s and Sophie’s readings at Hay on Wye, following the very respectful wish on @cumberbuddy’s blog, I need to give my opinion and feelings on two pieces especially.
In order of the readings:
First one of Benedict’s, the Christmas war letters. As a German you can imagine how much that one touched me on a deep level, topic wise to begin with.
I’m thankful this letter made it into the public like this and have it read with the respect these letters deserve by none other than Benedict.
Even during the toughest times, war times, as the world still experiences, even if not right in front of our own doors. Even during such times, humanity can be found, even between supposed enemies.
It also shows how stupid wars are, when supposed enemies are individually capable of being peacefully together, sharing meals, drinks, a good smoke, songs and talks.
This letter means as much today as it did back then during a war at another time in history.
Second Sophie’s read of Chrissy’s letter to JK Rowling.
I don’t have children, I’ve much younger twin sisters. Sisters I took care of a lot.
It’s not the same as being a mother, I’m aware of that, but each word Sophie read with her clear voice, as well as the moment her voice broke, hearing a woman sob, each struck a cord within me.
As much as I’m sorry that the permission hadn’t been given to publicise these, I’m grateful I got a chance to listen to the letters and especially these two in particular.
