Maybe it’s silly, but sometimes it’s all we have.
I don’t normally post, but I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, so:
Other people have noticed the replica Golden Record in the Hail Mary, which made me emotional. But what made me cry was this two-second shot at the end of the movie
that bears a striking resemblance to the very first artwork created in space, by Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in 1965.
I don’t know if this was done on purpose, or if it was a complete coincidence, but something about how understated it was really affected me.
We got here, you know? All of us, we got here.
you don't even have a dog
Ryland Grace means so much to me.
i might have already talked about this before but it’s actually crazy that jogging gets treated as a default ‘getting into shape for the first time’ exercise ESPECIALLY if someone’s goal involves weight loss. people who are more than ~200lbs often need special gear and running techniques to avoid shin splints etc *even if all that weight is solid muscle*, and the likelihood of injury only goes up as strength to weight ratio decreases. someone who’s both heavy AND untrained is just going to be miserable for however long it takes their bones and connective tissue to adapt to the sudden increase in demand. usually this takes months, but it can take even longer under adverse conditions like, say, suddenly eating way less than normal. and all this for an activity that literally isn’t even fun unless you are a specific type of insane. there are so many low impact and actually enjoyable forms of cardio why are we slapshotting biomechanically disadvantaged novices into the david goggins torment dimension
could. could you maybe. list some of those 'low impact and enjoyable forms of cardio'? this is not sarcasm, this is a genuine request, every form of exercise I have tried recently has put me in the torment dimension. thank you and I love you
yeah sure! there’s a lot of good suggestions in the notes, i’m probably missing a few
if you have access to a gym/appropriate facilities:
a LOT of people in the notes vouching for swimming, and it makes sense. not only is it basically zero impact on any of your joints, it engages just about every muscle in your body and it’s actually easier to stay afloat the higher your bodyfat%
stationary bike/elliptical: works for some better than others, but definitely far lower impact than running, usually has adjustable difficulty, and you can watch youtube videos or play games on your phone to pass the time
non stationary bike: the benefits of a stationary bike plus the ability to travel to a location
weight lifting: if you’re a total beginner to exercise this genuinely might be a better place to start than any designated ‘cardio’ activity, it Will get your heart rate up and build strength to do higher impact stuff with less risk, but designing a routine can feel overwhelming without help from a trainer/more experienced lifter
classes: yoga, pilates, dance, kickboxing, spin class, water aerobics, etc. as long as you can find one that accommodates your current fitness level and is a reasonably friendly environment
rowing: i actually know relatively little about rowing, but this has come up in the notes several times and people seem to like it. def seems like a good overall workout with little to no jarring impact
roller derby: definitely less of a Safe Beginner Activity and more ‘form of cardio you can do if you are on the fit side but still hate running’ but has come up in the notes multiple times specifically as a sport where a range of body types can do well
minimal equipment alternatives:
walking: if you have the resources to jog you have the resources to walk, and it really is a good form of exercise that also puts less strain on your joints
dance tutorials: seen a few people recommending these, there’s apparently a huge variety on youtube and you can take things at whatever pace works for you
yoga: also beginner friendly classes on youtube, good way to build up mobility and bodyweight strength
someone in the notes recommended hula hooping?? which actually sounds kind of genius especially if you don’t have a lot of gear or space. also iirc you can buy different weights of hula hoops for reasonably cheap so there’s a way to up the intensity over time
this seems like a decent resource at first glance and i think i saw more than one rec for them
one important thing to remember for anyone out there who’s significantly out of shape and feels overwhelmed is that when it comes to fitness you have one enormous advantage: it is currently EXTREMELY EASY for you to get exercise
do you 🫵 get winded walking up a flight of stairs? is curling a 5lb dumbbell 10 times difficult for you? can you barely do a single knee push-up? well i have great news: doing all of those things twice still probably takes less you less than 10 minutes. which means you can do a genuinely worthwhile daily workout in less than ten minutes. and it’ll probably get easy fast, and then you can find a heavier dumbbell

something something happy april 7th 2026, the day on which people stopped being born and dying and aging in 17776. something something happy april 7th 2026, the day that the artemis II successful lunar flyby puts humans the farthest from home we've ever been. 17776 saying 'I wonder if there's a single place in the whole world that's never had a story. I bet not'. late apollo 8/13 astronaut jim lovell leaving a message for the artemis crew saying 'welcome to my old neighbourhood'. 17776 saying re:the human fear of mortality that 'we were all in it together, though. every stranger you ever met, they were fighting the very same fight you were'. artemis ii astronaut jeremy hansen saying to houston over comms that the crew was naming crater carroll after astronaut reid weismann's late wife. 17776 saying 'they are creatures of play. they will remain creatures of play until the end of time'. artemis astronaut christina koch sleeping upside down during the mission. eddie krieger from 17776 who has sat in a cave for thousands of years asking "you ever wonder if this is heaven now? you ever wonder if we're all just there now and we don't know it?" the artemis ii crew being asked how they felt when they went behind the dark side of the moon and all communication was cut off. tim no-rock-unturned from 17776 replying that "I get scared. and I think, "this can't be Heaven if I'm getting scared, right? and then I think, 'maybe I am in Heaven, and Heaven is scary'. astronaut victor glover on artemis ii replying that "I said a little prayer, but then I had to keep rolling." happy april 7th 2026.
Jon Bois’ multimedia science fiction story 17776 depicts what American football might look like in a future 15,000 years from now, when humans have stopped dying, aging and being born. The answer is, unsurprisingly, absurd.
And yet, this is one of the most heartfelt, beautiful pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. It’s about finding meaning in a stagnant life, in a future where we’re doomed to keep spinning through space on this little piece of rock, forever.
All the joy and hope and tragedy and anger and futility and bravery and fear and perseverance of the human race is encapsulated in this little story.
Today, it begins.
And as the Artemis II mission travels further into space than any human ever has, I can’t help but look back at this text and wonder.
We have ourselves, all of us. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives.
Something is terribly wrong. Something is terribly wrong. Something is terribly wrong. Something is terribly wrong.
US Book ban on LGBTQIA books
The nationwide book ban bill, HR 7661, has progressed out of committee and into the House. Here's what you need to know to take action.
At least hit the shiny repost button if you're going to do nothing else. This should not stand.
Stop the bill dead in its tracks. LGBTQIA people have a right to be represented in books.
always have. <3
I haven't seen the film yet, but I've been carefully following news about Mark Fischbach's Iron Lung for the last couple of months.
It's REALLY gratifying to see that on opening day yesterday, Iron Lung surpassed its 3 million dollar budget, grossing a cool 3.5 mil. Sam Raimi's latest film, Send Help, also opened yesterday - and it made back only 2.2 million of its 40mil budget.
Ok, you say, but why is that so notable? A difference of 1.3 million bucks is nothing in Hollywood, right? But please, walk with me while I give some context:
Costume appreciation series: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) dir Brian Henson
Costume Design by Ann Hollowood and Polly Smith
Fashion historian Abby Cox did a delightful 30-minute breakdown of the costumes in The Muppet Christmas Carol:
And Nichole Rudolph recreated Gonzo as Charles Dickens’ outfit from the movie using historical research and techniques. Here’s a playlist of 9 videos documenting the process:
Every year it makes me so happy to see people discovering (or rediscovering) that the Muppets Christmas Carol is genuinely one of the best films ever made and I’m not kidding.
You could look at pretty much any aspect of filming - special effects! Music! Set design! - and literally every person on every team went absolute ham for this movie, because it was a labor of love. Brian Henson made the movie after the death of his father Jim Henson and co-father Richard Hunt. The whole team was devastated after losing the two men who had brought the heart and soul and creativity to The Muppets from the very beginning, and for a while there was debate over whether they should keep making movies at all.
(That scene where Kermit, voiced by Brian Henson, says the brief epitaph for Tiny Tim? The cracks and wavers in Brian’s voice are very real as he says “Life is full of meetings and partings children, that is the way of it. I’m sure we will never forget… this first… parting there was among us…” MY HEART.)
Eventually they decided that they would make this movie, and they would make it as a tribute to all the things Jim and Richard valued; kindness and empathy, in-jokes about life in showbiz, and an attention to detail that even the most autistic among us might not notice at first glance.
Please enjoy some screenshots of Abby Cox’s video, because she did her fucking homework hunting down the specific fashion plates Smith and Hollowood referenced:
(See they were printing plates with the latest fashions on them, that’s where the expression comes from!)
I do want to point out that the costume designers, Ann Hollowood and Polly Smith, were prepared to bring their absolute A game for this project even when it only had the budget of a made-for-tv Christmas special. But when the producers scored Michael Caine and locked in that good good Disney money, these two maniacs looked at each other and immediately said, probably in unison, “We are going to exhaustively research smocking techniques for men’s work shirts specifically from 1840 to 1842 - and keep in mind we’re doing this at a time before the internet is really a thing - then we are going to hand sew a tiny, perfectly accurate recreation, and then we are going to put it on a rat puppet for exactly one scene.”
And it shows. Every frame of this movie, literally every frame of this movie, contains costumes that are not only immaculately period accurate (bearing in mind that the story is not set in Generic Victorian Timey Times, it’s set in 1843 specifically, a time in European fashion that was completely fucking bonkers on several levels), but are also a pitch perfect insight to each individual character, with telling details that contribute to the vibe of each scene even if we don’t consciously pick up on them. We can tell that Miss Piggy is a fashionable lady who doesn’t have much money but is dressed up in her very best, even if we don’t actually know the elaborate tatting technique used to make that lace bonnet that was fashionable maybe 12 years before the events of the story, or that she clearly added a simpler tatted border to that older heirloom shawl to make it match the bonnet better.
And those plates weren’t the only inspiration, I actually recognize a few famous historical pieces, like this 1840s day dress currently in storage at the Met:
Look at it. Look at that fucking feat of engineering. Look at the way the upper sleeves are cut on the bias and the lower sleeves are cut straight, look at the way the pleated collar is gathered at the drop shoulders, and look at how many different ways and in how many places the intricate plaid pattern matches up at the seams, carefully folded and pleated so that the blue underthread matches up in the front panels of the skirt.
This character is in the corner of the screen for less than a minute in total. Smith and Holloway did not have to do this.
Even at a glance you can tell that this plaid pattern was probably less expensive at the time, but it too was cut on the bias, and her bonnet also has very very teeny tiny tatting. This character is also on screen for less than one minute, and she’s also about 4 inches tall.
THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DO THIS.
There’s a reason that one of the most frequently done Muppet cosplays ever is Gonzo as Charles Dickens, because that fit still absolutely fucking slaughters to this day:
Just look at this motherfucker! Look at his fur top hat and matching foxtoe shoes! Look at his stockings! Those stockings look accurately hand-knit to me, and they were on screen for a matter of seconds.
Next, let’s all channel our inner Miss Piggy and stare at Kermit’s crotch!
I couldn’t get clear screenshots of it to save my life, so you’ll just have to trust me, but when these characters are moving, you can tell that Kermit’s pants have a fold front fly. Which was popular up until about the early 1830s - which indicates that his clothes are about 15 years old, presumably the last suit he could afford to buy before he started having a bunch of kids.
Nephew Fred, on the other hand, is wearing the newfangled hot look of the season, a button fly front:
Again, you’ll just have to trust me, but it’s there if you know what to look for. Also, a keen eye will notice that Fred’s coat doesn’t fit him quite perfectly, but he and Clara seem to be stable enough that he could afford to get it tailored - which indicates that either he hasn’t had time or hasn’t bothered, or maybe it’s a new coat that Clara has just given him or something.
Let’s look again at Fred’s daytime monstrosity, period accurate down to the embroidered floral waistcoat with the plaid pants, which at the time would have been the absolute height of fashion for any young man to irritate his penny-pinching uncle in:
These methods of making clothes aren’t just old skills that have no modern application anymore, they’re advanced old skills. This is like someone writing a poem in iambic pentameter in a dead language, and only on the sixth reread do you realize it’s also a palindrome. This is insane.
Y'all. It took me until my 937th viewing of this movie, but I took a closer look at Peter’s little jacket:
It’s also a little outdated, like Kermit’s - and this isn’t a great photo of it, but if you look really really really carefully, there’s a line of darker fabric along the shoulders. And only if you really know your shit about sewing, you can spot the clues that this garment has been let out at the seams. Given that he can’t quite close it and the arms are still a little too short, that indicates that the Cratchets bought him a fairly nice coat a couple years ago and have kept letting it out as he grew. And I can’t find any stills to prove it, but I’d be willing to bet there’s evidence that Tiny Tim’s clothes are hand-me-downs from Peter.
THEY DID 👏NOT👏 HAVE👏 TO👏 DO THIS!
And in any other movie I’d assume that they didn’t, that it must be a coincidence or something, but given the level of detail in this movie I absolutely believe that the costume designers took the time to add a tiny clue like this that maybe fifty people on the planet would notice at the time.
And finally, here are the two women responsible for this visual feast I enjoy every year, and every year as my sewing skill grows I can appreciate more and more of their virtuosity and dedication to their craft:
Ann Hollowood!
Polly Smith!
I’m not sure if it was this post or a similar one that I made an addition to in the past but I will mention it again because I love this fact: Polly Smith was also one of the inventors of the sports bra!!! https://www.invent.org/inductees/polly-smith
Also a minor correction, but it was Steve Whitmire who performed Kermit, not Brian Henson.
This movie was just Genius. I watch it every year.
Male character: I'm not attracted to women.
Fandom: Oh, he's gay.
Female character: I'm not attracted to men.
Fandom: Oh, she's a lesbian.
Any character: I'm not attracted to anybody.
Fandom: Well, we don't know that they're ace/aro/aroace. It's open for interpretation. They're not canonically ace/aro/aroace unless they specifically say they are.
Hmmmm. I wonder why we're so frustrated in fandom spaces. I wonder if there's a reason.

YESSS BOTH OF YOU GET ME. YES. i love love love love loveeee how people are noticing and mentioning the small details i feel like im getting a good grade in art because people are Understanding the symbolism and meanings holy fuckkk. yesssss. and the bow is newly selected too. the item name is onscreen. it was just selected. the blend of old terrain bugs despite new terrain gen features... .yesss
(^ from a previous reblog in a different chain)
good morning its the time where i point out more tags pointing out details in the piece! roses don't exist anymore and yet he's offering you one, and has another in his hand. the farlands are behind him and there's a sand pyramid in the water. and bingo! the farlands dont exist in the same version as salmon (or granite/diorite and geodes)!
( @leopardmask-ao3 and @candlenav for your tags)
and its also artist commentary time (which @silly-fox-and-its-stuffies wanted)! this piece has a lot of small things and details. there's a few very minor coloring errors, but they're intentional to reference the old bug where white lines sometimes poked through block edges (which were often mistaken for eyes and is where the white eyes myth (herobrine's origin) came from), herobrine is crouching, a universal sign of piece in the game, and he's offering the player a rose. a flower which doesn't exist in the version we're in - there's amethyst and dripstone, new coal ore and redstone torch textures, something roses never overlapped with. and speaking of version discreppencies, the farlands are right infront of the player and are where herobrine came from. in the fog and sky in the background, it evening and turning night quickly, so he's offering the player somewhere safe to stay for the night (because in the versions he came around the night was extremely hard to survive for players with no base to stay in). the hunger bar is shaking. the player has a bed, two enchanted tools (the iron pickaxe is supposed to have efficiency 2, and the bow is supposed to have power 3), some food, cobblestone and five diamonds in their hotbar. the bow is newly selected. the item text just popped up, the player is aiming at herobrine.
and also, there's a cat and a couriway reference in the sandstone as easter eggs :) and a cornflower in the background
@salemoleander adding ur tags 2 this thread bc yesss. it IS meant to be a rose but i do realise it looks a little ambiguous because the thorns aren't that obvious. you're the first person to notice the new redstone torch texture which has me going yayyyyyy
LOOOOVE the analysis yes yes the player here definently isn't a speedrunner! well, isn't speedrunning now - the hotbar is actually based on my own hotbar layout, i always carry an extra bed to sleep when it gets dark and sometimes i just have random stuff in my hotbar. though the player in the screenshot isn't supposed to be me - it's just some ambiguous explorer with a messy inventory.
the hunger bar is shaking because the player has run out of saturation! it does this idly, but you don't see it too often because most people tend to always have some saturation.
as for the redstone torches instead of regular torches herobrine has placed - i like to think he's light sensitive, since he doesn't have pupils, so he tends to prefer the less light from redstone torches :]
(tags: #i really enjoy the analysis people are doing on my recent pieces#its very fun and i love getting to talk more about them)
^ reblog in another chain
( @airprime7 @hallowed-somnolence because i'm featuring your reblog + tags too)
yessssss im so glad p eople are noticing all the stuff i put in. water texture bug and herobrine holding two items... one in offhand...
as for the windows 7 ui, haha, guess who still uses windows 7. it's just coincidental, but i realise it does really add to it when you notice it.
( @theleagueofsupermushrooms ) i really enjoy talking about this piece (and my others too). its very fun to talk in-depth about my nostalgia and passion for a game i've played for nearly a decade now. the amethyst was added to be an obvious "this is old generation with modern features" sort of thing - but there's many smaller details that hint at it too. the coal ore texture, herobrine offhanding an item,, the white bed, the cooked salmon, the redstone torch textures, etc etc...
the player holding the bow is a player who only knows the stories of herobrine where he's evil and malicious and out to get you (aka, the modern versions pre-from the fog mod), hence why they're aiming at him. for what reason they're aiming is up to interpretation. but the herobrine coming from the farlands isn't one of malice and violence - it's one of kindness and gentle obversation, like the one from the original stories. he is simply existing in the world as the player, but they don't know this, because they only know the modern version of him - and not who he truly is
YOU ARE NOT READING TOO FAR INTO IT THIS IS DELIGHTFUL AND YOU GET IT. YOU GET IT. LETS GIVE IT UP FOR ANALYSING THE PLAYER'S HOTBAR
i like your thoughts... it is meant to be from herobrine's perspective! i do realise it is ia little ambiguous, but i intended it to be from him. i just didn't want to also draw chat... i have enough issue with the ui as is haha
the bow is freshly selected yeah! it's on the far right because thats usually where i keep mine, and the hotbar is vaguely based on my own :]
the player also isn't crouching (and probably won't be, i fear herobrine has found a player which only knows of the ghost he left in the wake of modern horror, one of violence and malice, instead of the origins of his existence, a peaceful existence in the world alike your own)
( @frauggiethecreature )
i have nothing to add, i simply wanted to highlight these too - eloquently put!
( @sympathytea )
the player is playing in a version beyond 1.21.2 and so is the entire world! there's no texture packs being referenced here ever, this is just what it looks like when you draw everything with the 3px regular brush in mspaint :') as for the held bow not being visible, that's just purely me not wanting to draw it (drawing hands and held items r a pain to do...) and the fact it was just selected haha..
the hunger bar is shaking because it idly shakes when you're out of saturation, not just starting!
and i like herobrine. he's just a guy. he was never malicious. that's a making of modern horror depicting him as an evil entity along the lines of entity 303 or what-have-you. i like showing who he is instead of who everything thinks he is
On of the less intuitive things about love, I've found, of any kind, is the importance of needing things.
I didn't realize it until recently, but I've always seen love as something requiring sacrifice, selflessness, patience, and generosity- to ask for nothing is to be the best person I can be, small and quiet and never in the way, always happy and helpful, self-sufficient and present when desired.
It's only as an adult, now, that I'm beginning to see the selfishness of wanting nothing.
I cut my friend's hair in my kitchen the other day. They wanted a trim and I had the skills, so I offered, and was genuinely excited when they stopped hesitating over "bothering me" and took me up on it. It was a peaceful afternoon, and we had tea and chatted for an hour or more.
My brother and I shared popcorn at the movies a while ago. When I came time to pay, I pulled my card out like a wild western sheriff and slapped it on the machine before he could fight me for it first. The satisfaction was delightful.
Someone called me crying on the phone the other day. Kept apologizing for disturbing me at work, talking about how they were bothering me on my lunch break. I was telling the truth when I told them that really, I was flattered and honored and relieved, knowing that if they were hurting I would know, that I didn't have to worry in silence. It felt good to hear them slowly come down, and to know that they knew it would be better soon, and to hear them laugh wetly on the other end. We're getting together for a visit next week.
It's hard to need things, if you've trained yourself not to. It's hard to want things, when you don't know how to want anymore. Trusting people is difficult, and so is relying on them, but I don't know where I'd be without the people who rely on me.
I've heard a lot of people say, "Nobody will love you unless you love yourself". I've had a lot of thoughts about it. It's not right, but it's not wrong, either, I think.
"Nobody will love you unless you love yourself"... I've always taken that to mean, "You will not be lovable until you develop a positive view of yourself as a person".
Now, I think it's sort of inside-out.
"Nobody will love you unless you love yourself"... because nobody can show their love to you in a way that you can accept until you treat yourself kindly, and learn what you need, and what you want, and how to ask for it, and then give that vulnerability away.
Love, for me, is someone I ask for a ride to the airport. Whether they end up doing this or not is irrelevant.
It's not needy, or selfish, or taking up energy. It's giving the gift of being wanted, and needed, and thought of. It's giving someone the security of being part of someone's life.
