I'm not a gatekeeper so yall. the best thrift stores are the ones that look bad. do not go to cool trendy thrift stores with hot alt twenty-something employees. (I mean you can if you want but enjoy paying $40 for a fuckass shirt.)
here's what you actually want in a thrift store:
in a rich town
run by a church
staffed exclusively by little old ladies
most of the clothes will be butt ugly. but they will also be 1) good quality and 2) cheap af. the 70 year olds running the shop think a thrifted shirt should be $3 and they are correct. everyone else shopping there is over the age of 45 so you won't have to throat punch any depop resellers over a cunty little top. you will get hyped up by old ladies and if you frequent the same shop they may start trying to set you up with their grandkids. everyone wins and who knows their grandkids might be hot.

โ if you're doing a non-dog non-horse animal please still perceive those two links. A guide animal is not a GPS that tells you "left" or "right" (in fact, you're the one telling it which direction you want to go). So before giving them something weird check if it actually makes sense. You can make a fantasy animal that still makes sense I promise ๐ฆฎ๐

Just give them a cane good lord if you want a character that can see perfectly then maybe don't make them blind
Bonus: if your character has a bunch of scars or whatever else then congrats! You made a character with a facial difference. Which is also something you should research.
I found and old one-shot that I started writing a year ago after talking to @berensteinsmonster about their H!V Thsc AU. I decided to edit and finish writing it for your reading pleasure.
This writing is of the moment the Government from this AU took interest in my oc, H!V Carson. This moment was based on a small conversation I had with Brine about this situation. (If this is in anyway inaccurate... it's been awhile so I'm sorry ๐ )
Quick warnings before you read this!
-While it isn't super descriptive, there is a case of violence between school children.
-The main character is written with early psychopathic tendencies
-The main character is also Trans, but the timeline where this is written is before any of the discovery is made about himself. Everyone in the story will refer to him as she/Her and by his dead name while the narration refers to him as He/him. This is only for story accuracy. Do not misgender him if you decide to speak about him.
Blunt and cold pain shot through his back as it made contact with the lockers that lined the school walls. His schoolbag, which felt like it was filled with bricks, pulled him off balance. He promptly hit his face on the colorful tiling of the school floor with a painful smack.
ย ย ย ย ย The snickers around him erupted into mocking laughter that pierced into his fragile pride. Taunting words hovered through the air like a cruel dance that never came to an end. He'd heard it all before, but that didn't dull the blow they provided. It never did.
ย ย ย ย ย He was sick of the pain, sick of the cruelty that would never end. No matter how many times he tried to report it, nothing changed. Because nobody cared.
ย ย ย ย ย His fists clenched against the floor while the mocking words and laughter began to blur. These bullies needed to be punished for what they were doing to him and some run of the mill punishment wouldn't cut it.
ย ย ย ย ย Something in him snapped and suddently everything was all a blur of shouting and screams. He was several punches in when his vision cleared and he was able to see just what he was doing. That didn't stop him.
ย ย ย ย ย "Woah! Hey! It was just a joke, Destiny!" He heard one of them shout.
ย ย ย ย ย Dragging the bully down, he grabbed their arm and pinned it down backwards. Something in their shoulder cracked, which earned a desperate and pained scream. One of the other bullies was trying to pry him off their buddy, but he didn't budge. His elbow jutted back to hit them in the stomach, and a new cry joined into the chorus of agony. He just smiled at it all.
ย ย ย ย ย ย "Oh my god! She's insane!"
ย ย ย ย ย ย "Get a teacher!"
ย ย ย ย ย ย The bully beneath tried kicking him off, but he was quick to use his knees to lock their legs in place. They were finally pinned down ans restrained for something. A final blow maybe?
ย ย ย ย ย ย That's when a stray pencil rolled from his fallen bag caught his eye. Without any thought behind it, he grabbed the pencil and raised it high above his head.
ย ย ย ย ย "WAIT! STOP! PLEASE!!" The bully begged with terror in their eyes, but his intrusive thought was already in motion.
His arm swung down.
ย ย ย ย ย The sharpened pencil stabbed into its target.
An agonizing scream ripped through the air, rattling the school.
ย ย ย ย ย A chorus of horrified gasps and screams erupted from other students and faculty that had flooded into the halls.
He was finally seperated from the bully and he figured it was a teacher that finally ripped him away from the bully.
ย ย ย ย ย "What is wrong with you?!" A scolding voice demanded.
ย ย ย ย ย Faculty swarmed the bully quickly while he was dragged away from the crime scene to the office.

ย ย ย ย ย The receptionist glared at him from across their desk as he sat in an uncomfortable chair in front of it. The office was devoid of its typical busy noise and instead replaced with the panicked whispers of concerned staff. He sat there silently, feeling the harshness of the stare the receptionist gave him. He didn't feel guilty for what he had done, and the glare he was receiving didn't influence him to think so. Instead, he was more frustrated that he was being punished for something that the other deserved.
ย ย ย ย ย Messing with his fingers, he wiped the small dots of crimson off without thinking much of it.
Several staff members were in and out of the office for what felt like an eternity. Their stress left a palpable tension in the office that further served to suffocate anyone inside. But not him. This was their problem, not his.
ย ย ย ย ย It felt like an hour had gone by when a group of important-looking adults finally entered the office. The faculty had gotten more panicked at the sight of them. While the principal scrambled to come up with a way to explain the situation to these people, he just sat a few feet away, watching the whole thing. Some of the important people began to scold the faculty and the principal for the incident. Which was hilarious to him considering he was the culprit of the whole thing.
ย ย ย ย ย Finally, one of those important-looking adults approached him. He only met them with a slightly narrowed stare. He was ready to defend himself against someone who clearly though they were better than him. But this important person didn't even begin to scold him.
ย ย ย ย ย "Is she the one who did it?" They asked the principal instead.
ย ย ย ย ย The principal stared at the two with a nervous but slightly hopeful gaze while they nodded.
ย ย ย ย ย "Get them out of here," the important person commanded with an exasperated tone.
ย ย ย ย ย Their orders were followed quickly as everyone except him was ushered into another room. Probably to be given more reprimanding.
ย ย ย ย ย "What's your name, kid?" They asked him.
ย ย ย ย ย He stared at them for a moment before replying suspiciously, "Destiny."
ย ย ย ย ย "Destiny? Hm... Well, Destiny, what you did today was incredibly violent and wrong."
ย ย ย ย ย "They deserved it," he huffed, narrowing his eyes again.
ย ย ย ย ย The person just sighed, "Perhaps. But even then, actions like this cannot be tolerated. At least not in this sense."
ย ย ย ย ย He tilted his head. That was an odd way to word that. The important person seemed to notice his confusion before reaching into their pocket and pulling out a card of some kind.
ย ย ย ย ย "While I don't recommend you do something like this again. I can see your future with us."
ย ย ย ย ย ย He stared down at the card that was given to him and read over it. These weren't just any important people. These people were from the government!
ย ย ย ย ย "Now. Let's contact your parents so they can come get you. I don't think this school will be supported under the educational board for much longer," they concluded, assisting him up.
ย ย ย ย ย As they made their way to the office's phone, he couldn't help but admire the first person who didn't chew him out for something like this. Maybe a role in the government was in his future...

ok back to the forst scene It really felt like horror unfolding cause like as the reader i KNOW whats about to happen and oh my goddddd THE PENCIL SCENE IS GIVING JOHN WICK A RUN FOR HIS MONEY i can just imagine how gushingly horrifying that mustve been for everyone involved. But to carson? to carson this was just the inevitable. Like it's not even something bad he did, to him, he just did what had to be done (in his own rationality)
Also I like the ambiguity of who it was that inspired Carson to join the tvog. in my reader interpretation, ilike to imagine it was someone from the Ministry of Peace division (which would prompt Carson to join them) or someone from the Ministry of Education (which makes sense if they're here to shut down this branch). It could be anyoneeeeeeee and that's what I really like about interpretation

Hello. Is there a list of anything that you want to see more in mute/non-speaking fictional characters? Are there any tropes/stereotypes that i need to be wary of? Thanks!

We would love to see:
All sorts of AAC methods (high tech, low tech, and no tech)
Disabilities other than "functionally abled but magically just can't speak", like cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disability, language processing disorders, situational mutism, apraxia, etc.
On that note, if your character can't speak because their tongue got cut out, which seems to be the major reason to have a nonspeaking character in fiction, that will affect their quality of life in a lot of ways other than being unable to speak. Commit to actually portraying that, please. Or just pick another reason they don't speak!
Fewer characters who are hearing and use sign language. Not that it never happens, but it makes up the vast majority of sign language representation in fiction and pop culture, despite being a very small percentage of actual signers in real life.
If you want a signing character, please consider making a Deaf character! (Think about how easy it is if you already have a character translating what your signing character is saying: just have them interpret spoken language too. You're now like 3/4 of the way to having solid Deaf representation.)
Nonverbal characters who are physically capable of making noise, like grunting, laughing, squealing, etc. even though they can't actually speak. These sounds can be communicative or non-communicative.
Or using echolalia, accidental mouth words, or other non-communicative speech in the case of autistic or intellectually disabled characters!
