We’re back from another trip to the Jungle.
‘The Jungle’ - Europe’s biggest ‘refugee camp.’
But it’s not a refugee camp.
It’s not run by UNHCR, or the Red Cross. Not even Oxfam, Unicef, Save The Children. None of them are there.
It’s just a camp. A slum. A place where a lot of refugees have found themselves with nowhere to go.
An asbestos-filled wasteland where thousands of people are struggling to keep going through the freezing winter of Northern France, unable to go back, but unable to go forward.
They have tried their best to resume normality. To live in dignity.
The human spirit shines through in the shops, the restaurants, the school, the mosques, the churches, the barbers and the library, all built from scrap bits of wood and tarpaulin, coming out of the mud.
After fleeing war, genocide, compulsory military service, totalitarian regimes and extremist terrorist groups, here, these people were told they would be ‘tolerated.’
Except they’re not tolerated.
They are becoming refugees from their own refugee camp.
The little they cling on to. The little they have left, is at imminent risk of destruction by authorities, and for many it has already happened.
Where they came from isn’t safe. And where they are now, is no longer safe.
This video shows the bulldozing happening right now, clearing huge areas of the camp.
People look out at where their only home, their only sanctuary once was. Now all that is left is the remnants in the mud.
Toothpaste, playing cards, cuddly toys and tear gas canisters.

If you’re yet to read my piece on the Huffington Post about this little dude and the pictures he took, then please do! The link is on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/theworldwidetribe).
You can see all of the images he captured with our camera and they are literally amazing. An intimate photo journal of life in the camp from the perspective of someone actually living there, and a child too, so people were happy to let down their guard. | #theworldwidetribe
