I have no one to talk to about this, so into the void it goes
The progression of Kelly’s character in the office is bonkers to me. She started off as kinda just a normal woman, albeit one who talks a lot and is a bit immature, but one who was willing to slap her boss for being racist in her face
I fucking adore that version of Kelly, honestly. One that stands up for herself in a major way, in the moment of the transgression. There’s no scene of her later capitulating to Micheal like she always does with Ryan later on in the show
I haven’t gotten all the way through my rewatch, but I’ll say that I despise the ping pong episode so much. She’s just being such a jerk to Pam, not even to Jim. Hurting Pam’s feelings and trying to make herself seem superior over something that could have been a fun, friendly bonding thing
As the show goes one, they make her seem like a pushover dummy, who will occasionally be cruel when she feels like it. I understand the comedy in her on-again/off-again with Ryan, but it’s essentially just her constantly being hurt and manipulated (honestly just emotionally abused and taken advantage of, if we’re gonna be real)
And all of this leads to her becoming even more vindictive and manipulative on her own. She has sweet moments, like when she got everyone mugs with their faces on them for her watch party, or when she wanted to do matching Halloween costumes with Toby, but overall I feel like she often gets reduced to vapid/catty-stereotypical-woman-character and it makes me very sad
I miss the brief version of Kelly who will slap a racist and just wants a nice connection with Ryan. Not the one who needlessly insults people in the office, lies about being pregnant to manipulate her ex, and, oh yeah, claims she was raped when men do things she doesn’t like??? Which is a throwaway line that I just can’t stand from the episode where she punished Dwight and Jim with fabricated client feedback (which could have harmed their careers, way too far for such a small transgression, especially coming after she had promised to be at Pam’s art show and didn’t go)
It kills me that the writers weren’t capable of keeping consistent comedy without flanderizing their characters to the extreme that they did, especially when they were grasping for steward to find comedy that wasn’t centered on Steve Carell
