This song was created and written by Natori, who describes it as being from Aqua’s perspective. In interviews, Natori shared several insights into the decisions behind the song;
"Each time I tried to understand Aqua as a person, I felt as though I was being plunged into an abyss of hopeless darkness. At the very least, I created this piece with the wish that he may sleep peacefully, even if only for the time this music plays" source
"While I was going through that difficult time, I ended up hurting a lot of people. I'd say things I shouldn't have, and then I started punishing myself, thinking, "Why did I say that?" I felt like I was starting to hate both myself and everyone around me. When I found myself thinking, "I'm such a fool, someone please punish me," I realized that the phrase "please punish me" might be exactly what I needed to capture the character Aqua in the third season. He also hurts people while following the path he believes in, yet he has to keep living for the sake of his mission. I interpreted that deep down, he too wants to be punished by others, and that other people's kindness only makes things painful for him. That's when I felt I had to write a self-punishment song." source
