Baz fancast - I wish he had a post of the performance that I saw because the song he chose was soooo Baz. I think you can still see the Baz vibes in this video though

Simon fancast - this guy is a brunette but he has the most golden boy energy. When I saw him perform he was wearing sweatpants and dancing about four feet away from me and it was the sexiest sweatpants have ever looked. He ended up stripping out of them and it was actually a disappointment. He also had insane charisma and seductive energy, just like Simon in the fic.

I just love that this very video is an accumulation of thousands of years worth of art made by people who have never met each other. The concept of this video was so completely unfathomable to every single artist who made the sculptures and yet they’ve all put something toward the creation of it.

When I was younger and more abled, I was so fucking on board with the fantasy genre’s subversion of traditional femininity. We weren’t just fainting maidens locked up in towers; we could do anything men could do, be as strong or as physical or as violent. I got into western martial arts and learned to fight with a rapier, fell in love with the longsword.

But since I’ve gotten too disabled to fight anymore, I… find myself coming back to that maiden in a tower. It’s that funny thing, where subverting femininity is powerful for the people who have always been forced into it… but for the people who have always been excluded, the powerful thing can be embracing it.

As I’m disabled, as I say to groups of friends, “I can’t walk that far,” as I’m in too much pain to keep partying, I find myself worrying: I’m boring, too quiet, too stationary, irrelevant. The message sent to the disabled is: You’re out of the narrative, you’re secondary, you’re a burden.

The remarkable thing about the maiden in her tower is not her immobility; it’s common for disabled people to be abandoned, set adrift, waiting at bus stops or watching out the windows, forgotten in institutions or stranded in our houses. The remarkable thing is that she’s like a beacon, turning her tower into a lighthouse; people want to come to her, she’s important, she inspires through her appearance and words and craftwork.  In medieval romances she gives gifts, write letters, sends messengers, and summons lovers; she plays chess, commissions ballads, composes music, commands knights. She is her household’s moral centre in a castle under siege. She is a castle unto herself, and the integrity of her body matters.

That can be so revolutionary to those of us stuck in our towers who fall prey to thinking: Nobody would want to visit; nobody would want to listen; nobody would want to stay.

And what if I told you that Ilya engineered that hookup specifically because he wanted to dom Shane that night and he knew that if he got Shane in that hotel room that Shane would submit to him so beautifully and what if I told you that actually that's what they both wanted so fucking bad and what if I told you that the only reason the Penthouse hookup is bad is because Shane DID NOT COMMUNICATE what he wanted. Vegas is sad because they aren't communicating well and they have feelings for each other and Ilya is refusing to recieve even the most basic aftercare (Chatting. Ilya enjoys to chat with Shane after sex, we've seen it before) and he's too in his own head about other things that he's failing to provide Shane's preferred aftercare (kisses) and neither of them even knows that that's a fixable problem at this point. THAT is the saddness of the scene. Not the kinky sex. They absolutely should have been having their kinky sex they just needed to be doing it more safely. But they're 24 and Ilya is about to reenter the Slavic Torment Nexus and Shane thinks he deserves to be sad forever until he wins a Stanley Cup. So.

in fact, what if i were to say that the reason it is so devastating is specifically because making the power dynamic so explicit makes them both want and care for each other even more than they already did, and that in fact the vegas sex scene is deeply deeply intimate and connected and a profound demonstration of how compatible they really are

Sliding in at the last minute to close off Mermay with some AU fanart of Simon and Baz from @rainbowrowell's Carry On.

Okay, so this particular illustration has been a rather long time coming. I did the original sketch for it two whole years ago, and since then I've worked on it a little bit here and there. But it's finally here! A bit messy for the odd journey it took, but still, HERE!

I had originally intended for Simon's tail and fin wings to be red, but after I posted my sketches, @monbons made these absolutely adorable dolls of them and gave them to me. (I treasure them!) She opted to make Simon's tail and wings green, and it got me thinking. I was then also inspired by the colors of the majestic sockeye salmon, and ta-da! Red and green. Baz also gets a purple(ish) tail. Because I too love putting him in purple. His tail and fins were inspired by those gorgeous tropical fish with striking patterns and beautiful diaphanous-looking fins. (I'm not sure which ones. I only know Alaskan fish.)

Anyway. Here, enjoy fishy Snowbaz! They will always have a special place in my heart.
