I remember the first time I saw Madame Butterfly with my mother. I remember watching her rise and fall with the eponymous character. I remember the intimacy of hearing it in our native language, as it was written. I remember asking my mother what drove her to a state of remembrance, which arch of her narrative led her to juxtapose herself to a woman whose situation was tantamount to slavery. I remember watching her always soft blue eyes grow sad and her voice nearly effervescent, as if trying to hide what was visible to me, as she said: “my son, you are an extraordinary young man, born with talent and charm that even your closest siblings envy, but you are young and crass, unwise and learned in matters of heart and virtue. You, my beloved son, have so much to learn, so much to gain, so much to lose before you are ready to understand the answers you seek”. I do not remember when I, too, felt myself rise and fall with that eponymous character. But, as is often the case, my beloved mother was right. #delraybeach #florida #viewsfromthecondo #💐 #vsco #vscocam (at Delray Beach, Florida)
“We were friends and have become estranged. But this was right, and we do not want to conceal and obscure it from ourselves as if we had reason to feel ashamed. We are two ships each of which has its goal and course; our paths may cross and we may celebrate a feast together, as we did - and then the good ships rested so quietly in one harbor and one sunshine that it may have looked as if they had reached their goal and as if they had one goal. But then the mighty force of our tasks drove us apart again into different seas and sunny zones, and perhaps we shall never see each other again; perhaps we shall meet again but fail to recognize each other: our exposure to different seas and suns has changed us.” I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about this quote and Roland Barthes’ use of it. I’ve spent a great of day living inside of this quote, memorizing its content and realizing its poignance. I’ve spent a great time of time thinking of everything around me, of every moment of particles as metaphor, as some signifier. In short, I have accomplished nothing of material value. #vsco #vscocam #florida #miami #architecture #💐 (at Miami, Florida)

I had planned to quote a letter that I had written to my beloved grandmother on 3 February 2018 as the caption. This particular excerpt concerned notions of duty and faithfulness, of, in her words, keeping the line in times of hardship or duress. But, as I typed out the excerpt, it felt cheap and unnecessary to share private moments with a person who is so pivotal to my development. But keeping the line is hard and the urge to give up and fail, to sacrifice my notions of queer solidarity and personal success is hard to overcome in site and situation specific some moments. She is right: keep the line; hold the progress; to yield victory is to die. #vsco #vscocam #florida #miami #thisispussypalace
the geotag is very sloppy and, in some way, perfectly captures the recklessness I see in this photo, the extraordinary disregard for technique But, as it turns out, the recklessness I see is just the disappointment of a boring composition #vsco #vscocam #grazianos #coralgables #florida (at Graziano Restaurant In The Gables)

excerpt from a letter dated 23 november 2013: "I will stay here and fight for my American life. I will not secede progress. I beg you to stay and fight for this American Republic, this most precious and promising of unions amongst men." You did not stay; you left for São Paulo shortly after. I stayed and fought for my American life, with little to show for it. I do not regret my decision to stay. #vsco #vscocam #coralgables #florida (at Coral Gables, Florida)
