Mothers Day :: My grandmother was resting on the couch when she asked me in all seriousness to lay on her belly just like I did when I was a little girl. In my broken Farsi I told her that my body weight would probably kill her. So I got my little cousin to go lie atop her belly instead. She was so calm. They both were. For about 10 minutes in complete peace and silence her arms rest around my little cousin Carmel. I sat and watched as her frail body carried Carmel with such strength, squeezing her as though she was protecting her from something. I don't think that I will ever envy Carmel anymore than I did in those brief moments.

Work is Worship :: Every time I find myself sitting in front of a sewing machine I'm reminded of the day I met with the beloved Dr. Peter Khan in his office, while he was still a member of the Universal House of Justice. It was toward the end of my service in the Holy Land and I was struggling with the thought of going home and pursuing my studies in PR and communications. He asked me what I was really passionate about and I told him that I loved to design and make clothes, which was very true at the time. I'll never forget his words of love, enthusiasm and encouragement, as he spoke of how much Baha'u'llah, Abdu'l-baha and the Guardian loved beauty and how this was exemplified through the gardens, holy places, and in their Writings. He said that we should always take pride in our appearance and that designers played a huge role in bringing that to life. Together we spoke of ways I could be of best service to humanity by pursuing this as a career and how the craftsmanship in itself was praiseworthy. His heightened level of interest was surprising but upon reflection this was nothing out of the ordinary. He was an exceptional human being and I miss him greatly. Needless to say I didn't pursue a career in fashion design but it is something that will always remain near and dear to my heart.
