Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember and that we don’t because we haven’t heard them.” And Mary responds, “I will teach you about what is hidden from you.” ::: “I will teach you,” Mary says. This is what made her gospel threatening enough to have an edict sent out in the 4th century for it to be destroyed. This is when the current Bible was created (by an all male council.) It had been established that leadership would be exclusively male. So clearly her story could not be included. ::: July 22nd is the feast of Mary Magdalene. I always mentally kiss the monks who buried Mary’s gospel instead of burned it when that edict was sent out. We have three copies of her gospel because of them. Holy rebels. ::: The Bible I use, The New, New Testament, edited by a professor of mine from divinity school (created by a council of men and women) includes the traditional canon as well as the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and the gospels of Thomas and Phillip, that name Mary as Christ’s companion, and The Acts of Paul and Thecla, that’s about a fiery Turkish teenager who baptized herself and ministered into her 90’s! (She’s buried next to Paul.) They included all the ancient scripture that had been originally excluded so that it could tell us what we haven’t heard, the story of a Christianity we haven’t tried yet. A Christianity that includes the story of a woman who Christ loved most. And a Christianity that believes that leadership is determined not by our sex but by the inner transformation we’ve undergone to hear the voice of Love.
