Black is not the color to associate with hope. And yet, for them it’s the color of film noir they both love. For her it’s the color of his hair and his leather jacket. For him it’s the color of smudges on her fingers, left there by the cheap commercial ink their joint school paper was printed with. It’s the color of thousands of cups of coffee they’d consumed at Pop’s. It’s the color of pupils, dilated by excitement in their most intimated moments.

Black can be terrifying, but it also enhances light like nothing else. They can both see it, the glimmer of light in all this blackness. And so they hope.
