DRIIIIIIVE

I saw "Drive" for the first time a couple days ago. I'm not going to get too deep cut about my love for it, but I am going to dedicate the next edition of INDIFFERENT BOUNDARIES on WRUV FM BURLINGTON 90.1 FRIDAY 4-6PM to my love for it. The sounds on the airwaves and over the interweb will all be "Drive" related, it's my vision of a soundtrack that carries on. I just have all these visions you see. So many visions. 

I plan to make you feel as good as Hillary, like Ryan Gosling is personally saying "hey girl" to you. Yeah, you're that girl.

As you can see from the screenshot above (#nofilter #amiright) it's been a weird week for music on my computer. That can only mean one of two things: a) long lost loves have been rediscovered or b) too much cough syrup.

The Pharmacy "Dig Your Grave"

A plethora of words come to mind when thinking about Vashon Island, WA natives The Pharmacy. Yes, a plethora of words, but none of them seem quite right… They could easily be described as lo-fi, indie rock, post punk, DIY, and so on. The only way I can really describe their sound outside of generic terms like the ones previously listed is through senses so bare with me. The Pharmacy sounds like how it feels when you walk into a punk artist collective and the wood floors are shredded to bits by the overwhelming power of stomping feet and moshing. They also sound like the smell of brassy fingers after playing a guitar, or the taste of a slightly past its prime meal scrounged from the expired goods store (meant in the best way possible of course). That’s the best way to describe not just the sound, but the feel of The Pharmacy.  Their latest release on Kind Turkey Records Dig Your Grave is no different. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Scottie Yoder, drummer/vocalist Brendhan Bowers, keyboardist Stefan Rubicz and bassist Ryan Thompson The Pharmacy is able to provide a sound that only friends could muster up and put together. Yoder and Bowers having known each other from way back in the day began making music together in 2000, 12 years later after multiple releases, multiple members and a healthy dose of touring The Pharmacy has been able to make a name for themselves coast to coast. The Pharmacy belongs to a community of artists and musicians that collect in pockets across the nation, in and outside of those pockets they are embraced with open arms and inspire people from all ages to loose their inhibitions on the dance floor. They do this by combining their alternative rough sound with a sense of delightful playfulness that radiates through each track and from, performance to performance. The Pharmacy is one of the few bands that can balance fuzzy electric guitar, fast paced vocals and keys with lighthearted toy piano.

Their latest EP Dig Your Grave is as playful and deep as the releases that proceeded it. The title track “Dig Your Grave” is a high energy jaunt filled with symbol crashes and dramatic keyboard arrangements that lead you to believe you are about to enter something outrageously cinematic. Then Yoder’s distinct voice chimes in reassuringly and carries you through the rest of the potent track. If you are confid to a neck-brace do not attempt to listen to any tracks on Dig Your Grave, injuries from excited head bobbing will occur. The finale track of the EP, “Burn All Your Bridges” is a downtempo, solemn ballad that encourages you to “Burn all your bridges down / Sink them in the Puget Sound / And all the seagulls gather ‘round / To shit while burning bridges drown” a mantra that resonates far and wide when it comes to the bridges that link the individual to the larger society. The Pharmacy has pulled themselves up by the bootstraps over the last 12 years and have done so in a way that isn’t easy. They have stayed true to their sound and grown along the way. Dig Your Grave shows that and leaves the listener in anticipation of what’s to come.

Maps & Atlases "Beware and Be Grateful"

Chicago’s Maps & Atlases sophomore full length album, Beware and Be Grateful out on Barsuk Records is a worthy of follow up  to their highly acclaimed debut Perch Patchwork. Keeping in line with the sound that has propelled them up through the ranks Beware and Be Grateful carries the band’s signature experimentalist sound, and direct it in a clear path from track to track. The album is filled with bright, fluid harmonies and rhythms.      From the opening song “Old and Gray” there is an immediate pull to invest yourself into the music. The track begins with crystal clear lyrics that blends well arranged harmonies that will soon mold your listening experience. The track quickly advances into a delightful and rhythmically haunting journey, all leading to the heart of it. Maps & Atlases provide a story, everything is intrinsically linked through their unique sound. “Silver Self” is the centerpiece of the album. Heartfelt vocals and the familiar building momentum provides energy and fulfillment. “Silver Self” is a great example of the dynamic nature of Maps & Atlases. After the initial solemn feel it jubilantly bursts into rhythms reminiscent of the sounds you would hear at a street party in the most colorful corner of the Caribbean. Maps & Atlases has succeeded with Perch Patchwork, and now Beware and Be Grateful in creating an experience that is above all enjoyable and hearty. It’s hard to pin down exactly what genre Maps & Atlases fits into because there is nothing generic about their sound. They have skillfully incorporated multiple sounds while both honoring their source and creating something new and distinct.

M. Ward "A Wasteland Companion"

M. Ward’s latest album A Wasteland Companion put out on Merge Records is a timeline of his experiences and memories since his 2009 release Hold Time. As M. Ward told a New York Times writer “I can trace all of my songs to a specific moment… Sometimes it’s as insignificant as a friend of your saying something, a turn of a phrase. Other times, it’s like an epiphany moment or just something beautiful that you see.” This creative mentality shines through the entirety of A Wasteland Companion as well as M. Ward’s work as a whole.     A Wasteland Companion from start to finish plays like a diary of his travels and adventures during the last three years. This time period of time included the release of full length albums and multiple collaborations, including ones with: Conor Oberst, Jim James and Mike Mogis, as well as his role in the band She & Him, a project consisting of himself and singer/actress Zooey Deschanel. In addition to his established connections, M. Ward reached out to collaborate with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Dr. Dog’s bassist Toby Leaman.    

In order to continue his strong bonds with his fellow performers as well as work towards the completion of A Wasteland Companion M. Ward used recording studios around the country when he had a moment to himself. Recording outside of his studio near Portland, Oregon was a step outside of his comfort zone, as he explained in an interview released by Merge Records,                    Between now and when I made Hold Time, there has been                    a lot of traveling which requires a lot of reckoning with                    what to leave behind and what to cary – material and                    otherwise – and thinking about what I want versus what I                    need, creatively and otherwise. I wanted to get a reflection                    of that on the album. It was a process of stripping away my                    security blanket, which is the same four walls I always record in. A Wasteland Companion is a smooth album that acknowledge the multitude of various contributors but never allows for it to become an overwhelming listening experience. Ward’s rough yet gentle voice provides the perfect vehicle to tie all styles together. “Sweetheart” a cover of Austin-based Daniel Johnston’s song is the perfect example of Ward’s mastery of genres. The track is a mix of country-rock with an ever present feel of girl group indie pop.     Ward’s genius also comes into play with his ability to create beauty out of tragedy in the most appropriate of ways. The first track on the album “Clean Slate” is a tribute to Alex Chilton of Big Star, who unexpectedly passed away from hear failure in 2010 only days before his anticipated showcase at South by Southwest. Ward along with his fellow artists decided that an empty stage would  lay stress on the event and that the best way to start healing and memorialize their friend was to take the stage and perform Chilton’s tracks in his honor. From track one to twelve the listener is able to feel the sincerity Ward has put into this graceful and elegant album. A Wasteland Companion appears to be the best companion. Listening is a guided journey, one of which you’ll want to take multiple times.

Tu Fawning "A Monument"

With Tu Fawning’s sophomore entitled A Monument, they have made clear they have found who they are as a band and what sound they want to present to music lovers everywhere. Different form their debut Hearts on Hold, this new venture is far more cohesive with a clear direction. Tu Fawning’s sound which is very unique to the quartet (Corrina Repp, Liza Rietz, Toussaint Perrault, and Joe Haege,) Repp’s powerful vocals coupled with heavy blues-guitar and a healthy dose of synth make for a stunning combination. A Monument utilizes synth as they haven’t before, stepping away from the dark haunted sound of their previous releases. This new instrumentation provides the album with a high energy feel that radiates throughout. As Haege describes,                             When Tiussant played us some loose ideas he                             had recorded we all fell in love with them and they                             ended up kind of defining the record: using synths                             more heavily yet with no intent of making “synth”                             or “electro” music. The goal was to capture a feeling                             that someone listening to it couldn’t easily pin down                             the era it’s from… For this album we were no longer                             starting with a vague identity. Tu Fawning has successfully mastered synth adapting it to their own style, without letting it define their work as a whole. Synth paired with an array of unusual instruments such as, ragini, a tuned down marching band drum, samples of South American chants translated into chords as well as a style of vocals where they physically turn their backs to the microphone and yelling has come together to create something special.

Bear In Heaven "I Love You, It's Cool"

Bear In Heaven’s latest album I Love You, It’s Cool is filled with an abundant amount of bubbling and inspirational synth. The rhythms and soundscapes created by this Brooklyn trio comprised of Jon Philot, Joe Stickney and Adam Wills speak to the fact that since the release of their second album Beast Rest Forth Month over two years ago they have improved and grounded their sound. After Beast Rest Forth Month, Bear In Heaven racked up nearly 200 performances in support of the album. I Love You, It’s Cool is the culmination of their hard work and determination. I Love, It’s Cool has a certain level of sophistication that remains constant throughout the album. The artful weaving of synth and percussion provides the listener with a sense of nostalgia for a distant land. While the album has a very reflective tone, the nature of the instrumentation and arrangement provides something distinctly futuristic. “Noon Moon” has an engrossing undercurrent that subtly follows you through the song. There is familiarity in the track but it constantly leads you down a new path. The guitar riffs that track the progression of the journey are simplistic and comforting. The familiarity that is developed through not one track, nor album, but through Bear In Heaven’s sound itself speaks to their ability to evolve meaning through song. From the very beginning “Sinful Nature” grabs you with it’s jittery, pulsating synth layers accompanied by Philot’s well blended vocals. The track really encompasses all the best parts of their genre spanning sound; psychedelic, electronic and a flavorful dose of krautrock are all present. Cut to cut the album is as dynamic as is its blissed out sound. “Cool Light” sounds just like its title, it’s a hazy, euphoric lullaby of sorts with shimmery undertone carrying the track along. Bear In Heaven creates a playful and earnest melody that induces the urge to get up and vibe along. Stereogum.com had it right when they listed I Love You, It’s Cool as the third most anticipated album of 2012. Bear In Heaven has delivered with full force.

Miniature Tigers "Mia Pharaoh"

“I’ve got a fever of a hundred and ten. / I’m comin’ over, and over, and over again. / There’s no need for you to pretend. / So come over if you want it and jump me again.” No one knows camp like I do. I’ll take a clever, even not so clever sexual innuendo over almost anything. So when Miniature Tigers' decided to kick off their album Mia Pharaoh with that stanza in “Sex on the Regular” I knew I was in for some good ole pop jams.     Mia Pharaoh is made special by the commonality that runs through it. The titillating nature of tracks and grooves seems to be ripped directly from a 15 year old boys fantasy diary, laden with notes of a “letter to Penthouse” caliber. Their track “Female Doctor” is accompanied by a video accurately encompassing the inspiration for the album with footage from a Russian hidden camera show filled with big bosomed lady doctors whose‘ super-sized breasts and behind screen antics capture the attention of unsuspecting patients.

Miniature Tigers’ latest release really shows their growth as a band, with Mia Pharaoh, they make common juvenile misconceptions of love/lust into laughable subject matter and make an artful and enjoyable album. Each song provides laughs, encourages participation, and provides undeniable pleasure derived from the absolute absurdity and humor of it all.

YPPAH - "Eighty One"

Joe Corrales Jr. aka Yppah (pronounced “yippah”) with his latest release Eighty One has created an album of pure and blissful soundscapes. When listening you can tell that each track is grounded in a personal experience had by Corrales, but somehow he has embodied his own personal memories in a way that allows them to become the listener’s. There is a relatable nature that flows throughout Eighty One which provides comfort and guidance throughout the album.

Throughout Eighty One warmth radiates through the cool electro glitches and synth. “Blue Schwinn” is reminiscent of a warm and slightly humid day at the beach where salt hangs in the air and with it lifts all burdensome feelings and emotions. 

Even tracks like “Happy To See You” which features rapid guitar riffs and at times seemingly overcomplicated arrangements of percussion rhythms paired with lofty synth provides a sense of calm. While listening to the album as a whole one must set aside all flustering thoughts and let the nostalgic undertones help to clear your mind. Corrales has delicately and thoughtfully arranged Eighty One and it shines through track to track.
