The Burial of the Count of Orgaz - El Greco, 1586
Music: In Paradisum - William Harper, 1995
This painting depicts the Count of Orgaz is being lowered into his coffin by the miraculous apparitions of Saints Peter and Paul. At a funeral the 9th Century hymn In Paradisum would be chanted at this point in the Mass.
In this music I use the In Paradisum chant tune from the Requiem Mass (Liber Usualis 1956, p. 1768) as the basis for a scene from my opera, El Greco, which recreated the painting on stage.

The artist William Kentridge uses his trademark animations to stage Berg’s bleak opera about a delusional soldier.
The artist’s production of Berg’s brutal opera, updated to World War I, has come to the Metropolitan Opera.
With its new Sunday matinees, the Metropolitan Opera now mounts four productions between Friday and Sunday. It isn’t easy.
Why is a musical that perpetuates a Western fantasy of Asians as small, weak and effeminate people still so popular?
In his “Ring” cycle, Wagner uses musical themes to create a world of gods, heroes, dwarves and giants.
