You’re late!

This is my mostly LOTR (Mostly Frodo duh) side blog! My main is @mushroomrealestate but I’m hoping to move to a new one soon.

My pronouns are she/her. I’m an ace lesbian and I’m 23 years old.

Fair warning that I like to be critical of things I like! (You’ll see a lot for Lord of the Rings specifically, especially to do with the racist losers within the fanbase and the franchise itself.) That does not mean I hate them though! I just think it’s good and important to look at things we like with a critical lens, like we would anything else. I’ve been a fan for years and years, but there are plenty of flaws and problematic aspects that I will not hesitate to dissect and speak about.

I am an unapologetic enjoyer of both romantic and platonic depictions of Frodo and Sam and I’m thankful that the discourse has died down lol (You will mostly see romantic here, in both stuff I re-blog and stuff I create. I’m a simple gay what can I say. Still love platonic stuff though. We also don’t tolerate any form of Rosie Cotton slander here.)

We don’t do bigotry here, so be warned that I will block any blog that appears to be racist, homophobic, transphobic, ablest, zionist, antisemitic, xenophobic, any form of MAGA bullshit, and any other brand of bigotry I might have failed to mention.

I’m hoping to start a new main, and most political stuff will end up there/my current main, but you’ll see some of that here too. I always want to do what I can to help my friends in crisis, especially considering the absolute dumpster fire that is our world right now.

I don’t engage with NSFW content. No shade it just freaks me out lmao just not for me.

I also don’t engage with AI content. Full shade for that though. (AI also means an instant block from me.)

I engage with some horror content, but rest assured that anything featuring blood will be tagged accordingly so you can avoid it if need be.

This is going to change over time! This is just somewhere for me to obsess over my hyperfixation, without needing to subject my poor irl friends and family to hobbits kissing each other 24/7. Things are going to be chill here. (For the most part.)

I'm sorry, disregarding the textual evidence that can easily disprove his claims, and that Andy Serkis's comments reek of racism, it is especially vile to say you won't do "diversity casting" when Peter Jackson's Middle-earth, but especially the original trilogy, were built on the backs of the Māori people of New Zealand.

For fucks sake! I can think of at least 2 Hakas filmed in the appendices off the top of my head. One of which Serkis was present for! The culture was ingrained into the set.

They could not have made that film without the help of Māori stunt people, actors, and crew, and to say that they could never lead or support a film unless they look white because of some made up rule that doesn't even have evidence to support it is truly next level evil.

Evidence that supports diverse casting in Middle-earth (because I am still still not over it):

-The Hobbits were wanderers for a vast amount of time before they settled in the Shire who traveled much of Middle-earth

-Over half of the Dwarven Houses are from or actively live in Rhûn, the land of the Easterlings

-These houses fought in the West as recently as Azanulbizar (where Thorin receives the moniker Oakenshield, some 200 and change years before the Fellowship set foot in Moria)

-Following this thought, two of those houses are named Stiffbeards and Blacklocks. I would love to see an explanation on how those CAN'T be Black and Brown features

-To assume there is absolutely no transfer of culture, or previous interaction before their teneous relationships in the 3rd age between Men of the West, the Harad, and the Easterlings even in as minute a form as prisoners and defectors speaks to a kind of ignorance in how the world works. (For Christ's sake silk is mentioned multiple times in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Rhûn takes inspiration from the cultures where silk originated. There had to be transfer of goods somewhere!)

-There are numerous character descriptions revealing characters to be explicitly brown and/or dark

I will repeat, Andy Serkis is a sniveling coward to hide behind Tolkien's words when he is factually wrong. I hope he has the epiphany that he needs to apologize for how he has alienated half of the fan base. I am appalled by his behavior.

TLDR: you can’t value the potentially troublesome and/or racist beliefs of ONE dead person more than ALL your fellow human beings. If given a chance to CHOOSE to include people who have historically been pushed to the sidelines for racist reasons and upholding a racist ideal of an idyllic whites own paradise you should choose inclusion over exclusion

At this point I want to scream at people that we don’t HAVE to be faithful to the horrible beliefs of our predecessors. Like even IF Serkis was right (and he’s not) WE can choose to NOT repeat the mistakes of the past.

Tolkien wasn’t perfect and there is racism and bigotry in his works AND there was also a lot of anti-bigotry in his works but we’re not bound to the perspective of one man. We can choose to pick up where he left off and further correct the harmful tropes and inherent biases in his books.

No matter what Tolkien intended, Middle-Earth belongs to everyone and is home to everyone and we can choose to reflect the beauty of our diverse world by welcoming EVERYONE into our own interpretations and reimagings of Tolkien’s world.

When WE create something (even if it’s a reinterpretation or built off of someone else’s work) WE get to choose what values we want to imbue that work with. If we truly believe in antiracism and fighting against white supremacy, racism, fascism, etc. then we must actively choose to include the voices of people who historically have been pushed out for racist reasons.

By actively choosing to hide behind this weird logic that Tolkien wanted a pure whites only Shire so we just CANT cast people of color as hobbits, you are actively choosing to uphold the white supremacist and racist thoughts that are harming the world today. Then you’re using the dead professor as your shield to retain the goodwill of people willing to give you the benefit of a doubt (or who just don’t care). It’s insidious and a great way to cover your own troublesome beliefs. Additionally it creates this mental wall where you don’t have to question your own inherent biases.

Also, even IF that was truly Tolkien’s intention (which it wasn’t) WHY would you want to uphold that intention of all intentions? Why wouldn’t you want to dismantle that disgusting idea as soon as possible? You can love Tolkien and his world and also say you know what that’s a fucked up idea. Let’s not do that. Or yeah no professor that’s your bigotry/racism/biases popping up and I’m not going to tolerate that

There is this weird tension between remaining faithful to a book/comic and acknowledging that the mere act of adapting a work requires you to take someone else’s work and make it your own and by doing so YOU are actively choosing what to retain and what to reimagine. Your adaptation will NEVER be the book because the book is the book and your adaptation is YOUR take on the book. You, ultimately, are responsible for what is included and what isn’t and what you, either subconsciously or consciously, add to the adaptation.

Finally England/Europe has always had POC!!!! So this entire conversation is bullshit. Include BIPOC in your projects people!!!

I feel like pointing out Tolkien did explicitly state that one of the three groups that originally founded the shire had brown skin, just for the people who don’t know why Serkis is completely full of shit. Also, two out of three of the houses of the Edain were described as racially diverse, and the elves and dwarves skin colour was never mentioned at all.

I know this addition is sorta undermining the posts point a bit, but I figured someone reading this might want to know why people who make these claims are just being racist; people like Serkis are actively ignoring the text in order to push a white supremacist agenda. I’m just so tired of all this “whites only middle-earth” nonsense.
