Sokka really is just a polymath like the dude is a warrior, swordsman, expert strategist, inventor, and based on that Ba Sing Se episode, has a knack for poetry. Good for him.

From a writing perspective this does a lot to put him on the level of the rest of his party. 

The issue with writing the “non-magic” guy is that their significance can get quickly overshadowed when all their friends are basically gods who can control primordial elements and do what is essentially magic. The writing staff carved Sokka’s niche out early and continued to give him opportunities to show his cunning and intelligence while also highlighting his non-bending combat abilities. 

Asami filled a similar niche by being the wheelman, tech-guru, and socialite. No, she can’t hang with Korra in terms of mystical power but her role in the story is not diminished because the story constantly gives her scenarios where her skills are uniquely suited to solve the problem at hand. 

I think it’s easy to fall into the power creep trap where one or two characters control the entire story and the rest of the cast is relegated to cheerleading. ATLA is actually a really good case study in how to keep non-supernatural characters relevant in a supernatural setting by giving them a niche nobody else fills and giving them opportunities to show to the audience why they belong in a team with people who are objectively more powerful than they are.

Lesbian Doujin ‘The Life of a Yuri Couple in Love’ Available in English

The first volume of mk’s lesbian doujinshi (independent comic) The Life of a Yuri Couple in Love (Osananajimi no Yurifufu Seikatsu) is now available digitally in in English. The manga is mk’s first manga release. It is sold on mk’s Booth account.

The creator describes the manga:

An original girls-love manga about a flirtatious lesbian couple who were childhood friends. These two girls have been friends since childhood, and even now that they’re grown up, they’re still just as close and lovey-dovey. This is a comic that I created about their daily life. This is my first [doujinshi], so some parts may seem awkward, but I hope you’ll give it a chance!
