LDPDL Books 3 (Romance / Parallels) - Marriage
Day Three centers Louis’ journey with romantic love and intimacy with his partners throughout his life. The other prompt on day three is centered around parallels you might find with Louis and his story with other characters. These characters DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE IWTV UNIVERSE! Absolutely any character you can think of that has parallels to Louis is acceptable:) @ldpdlweek2026
For ldpdlweek2026, I'm compiling AMC's book references (S1 | S2 | AMC Auction) to break them down thematically, and explore the parallels in the books AMC used to contextualize Louis' dynamics with the people in his life. Here, Imma focus more on the state of Louis' failmarriages, rather than romantic love & intimacy full stop.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time (or energy) to give each of these references the attention/analysis they deserve. So what I did instead was make a chart comparing of all of their main themes, and how they relate to Louis' marriages to Lestat & Armand. (I deliberately skipped Bogie & Bacall since they were an IRL couple. I'm saving Edward Carpenter's Marriage in a Free Society (1984) for Day 5 (Sexuality).)
Out of the 11 stories listed, only 1 was from a straight man's POV. All the rest parallel Louis' relationships & dynamics with a straight (white) woman's trials & tribulations (*cough* Anne Rice *cough*). They were painfully naive & submissive (5), chronically depressed & suicidal (7), very mentally unwell (4), or all of the above (3 - 5).
These women were often trapped in toxic AF failmarriages (7) with either annoyingly oblivious / offensively insensitive men (4) or dangerously abusive/patriarchal a-holes (6).
There were more stories about toxic AF love triangles, cheating & infidelity (6), than about motherhood or neglected children (4); but regardless, the wife/woman was miserable.
Some of the stories ended in separation/divorce when the relationship imploded (4); but some are WAY more tragic and ended in the death of either the wife (3) and/or her man (2). Very rarely was there an HEA (1), while some had a more ambiguous ending (2).
TL;DR: Art Imitates Life
Antis can rewrite the "Human AU the tale that was told" and using "clues" about bullcrap to spread abuse apologia & denialism to make Louis look like a liar all they want. At the end of the day, IWTV was still sending seriously important messages about toxic relationships and their consequences. Either willfully ignore that to woobify your problematic long-haired non-Black faves; or acknowledge that vampirism is an allegory/metaphor for HUMAN power dynamics, not the other way around. 🤷♂️
