Content Warning: This post is going to talk about the latest season of Bojack Horseman, specifically the themes of hating your body/weight, body shaming, and forced drugging.
Okay, so I really don’t want to talk about this, but I just realized something.
In the tenth episode (of season four), Bojack is able to figure out that Beatrice (in a senile state) was drugging Hollyhock.
You could argue that it was just a hunch but…I think it’s a lot worse than that.
We’ve seen throughout the season that Bojack has serious body issues, as indicated in the random quotes he slips by that we just see as those weird existential zingers that are both funny and depressing:
In almost every episode, he uses ‘fat’ as an adjective to describe himself, he tells Hollyhock that he’s fat, he’s shone to regret and blame himself every time he eats.
And the worst part is, on their own, these comments don’t really mean anything. They’re just sort of the ‘Homer Simpson’ esque comments, his way of acknowledging a minor flaw about himself casually. You don’t take it seriously. You don’t really think that he actually has body issues…until it’s too late…
How did Bojack immediately know that Beatrice had spiked the coffee?
Well, remember what she says, in a voice that caused me to shiver when I first watched it and just now when I got the above screencaps?
“It’s an old family recipe.”
Now, after seeing the infamous eleventh episode, we know that Beatrice was forced to starve herself and take diet pills.
But…what if that’s not actually what she’s referring to?
What if there was another moment when she slipped dietary drugs into someone’s coffee, possibly causing them to become sick, certainly causing them to hate their body even when they’re in their fifties, and giving them the ability to immediately put two and two together to realize that she did the same exact thing all over again?
And I know that this time, it technically wasn’t Beatrice’s fault. She has dementia. But that’s just it. She has dementia. This didn’t come from nowhere. She was recreating something that she had done in her past.
Fuck man…Beatrice poisoned her own son…literally…she literally poisoned him…
