expanding more on daisy mae’s upbringing and how it made her vulnerable to being taken advantage of
daisy mae’s parents were overtly religious and conservative, the subject of sex was extremely taboo with the word itself being treated like a cuss word. so needless to say they never had “the talk” with her or even permitted her to participate in sex ed classes at school. she wasn’t taught about safe sec practices, consent, or what to expect etc. she wasn’t taught about her own body, what the correct terminology for genitalia was. if you showed 16 year old daisy mae a diagram of a v.agina from a text book she couldn’t tell you what anything was called.
one time when she was very young her mom saw her touching herself, this was simply her curious about her own body . but she was snatched up and yelled at, told she was disgusting and a very bad girl. she was told god had seen her and was angry which of course terrified her. her father smacked her hands hard with a stick a number of times and threatened to do it harder next time if she ever did it again.
nathaniel was one of the most handsome guys in her small town, and when he flirted with her at some random party she snuck out to go to of course she felt practically giddy. she’d had a bit of crush on him for a while which is one reason it took her so long to realize he had assaulted her.
nathaniel knew she was sheltered, naive, and nearly entirely oblivious about sex. and took advantage. she thought they were just going to make out and she’d let him feel her up a bit; when he reached for his zipper and started to tug at her shorts she kept asking him “wait” and “hold on” and her voice was clearly uncertain / uncomfortable. she didn’t explicitly say no but her hesitation and the way she froze up should have been enough of a signal.
her first time hurt badly because she hadn’t been prepped, but Nathaniel kept assuring her it would feel “so good baby” really soon, just ride out the pain for him. daisy mae was conflicted. this was one of the hottest guys in town, she had a crush on him. she kissed him back and wanted him to touch her. she didn’t understand for a long that consent can be taken back whenever. she also didn’t understand that just because it wasn’t a random stranger in an alley way like on tv didn’t negate the fact it was SA.
despite her own attempts to justify and explain it away, she did become withdrawn and depressed after it happened. she couldn’t talk to her parents of course, not even her mom. for the first time she desperately wanted to. but they’d kill her if they found out. honestly they probably would have blamed her if they knew the details. yes, even her mother.
