i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.

i don't like how this website tries to equate 'shelteredness' with physical isolation and asociality rather than an obliviousness to one's place in society that is afforded through material privilege. someone can have a job and a thriving social life and regularly go out with their friends or whatever and still be 'sheltered' about certain forms of oppression in that regard. i promise you your rhetorical "shut in" who has been cut off from the outside world (through self-imposed means or otherwise) is probably the least likely person to be blissfully unaware of life's hardships if you were to actually think about why it is they might be in that position in the first place

ok first of all i would like to recommend my mutual sexcromancy's AHU (ali hazelwood universe) tag that explores romance conventions and the sociopolitical implications of their execution across. well. the ali hazelwood universe ! & also the publishing industry . & classics . and the mainstream reception of & views on romance . really fun & comprehensive a cornerstone of my enjoyment in hetromance so far

i really liked this essay on how white fear killed the romantic comedy bc it talks abt how racism is kind of foundational to popular romance in a way that's (as edward said has called it) "productive" to its reactionary sentiments & of course purposefully limiting from a feminist & antiracist perspective. discussions of race in romance are so interesting to me it's why i enjoy rgu & heated rivalry so much -- even if the text itself only hints at the race relations driving the frictions between the characters, the way they are baked into the very premise of the story allows for enriching readings for the reader/viewer

speaking of racialization in romance i have to recommend edward said's essay on mansfield park which may not be directly abt romance but given austen's position in the landscape is an essential read nonetheless, imo.

also this essay on the racist overtones of the bodice ripper felt like a breath of fresh air for how it charts the implications of such a popular & problematic romance trope (all romance tropes are problematic in the sense that there are problems posed & problems solved.......racialization is foundational to the way these problems are posed and solved. helen from pluribus voice make raban the love interest sexy & alluring ! give him dreads ! like. it's inescapable)

of course you can't talk abt western hetromance without talking about sex & the city. i forgot how funny andrea long chu is but this essay reminded me

i know you asked for readings but i love bazazilio's video essays on the romance genre particularly this one abt dark romance & this one abt passivity in romance protagonists. recommending these bc not only are they rlly interesting they also serve as a jumping off point--nearly everything she cites warrants further exploration. my kind of media rabbit hole

Hey all! Normally when I post for Mona's community aid initiative, I post about the communities of refugees she is helping. But today I went to Instagram to update you all and saw that she hasn't posted since April, and we hadn't spoken since then either. She hadn't messaged me updates like she normally does. I was very afraid. It turned out she had broken her phone during a displacement, and she hasn't been able to replace it due to the high costs. Mobile phones are a scarce and expensive resource in Ghazzah but they are a lifeline for the families there. And for Mona it is not just a lifeline for her family but also for the refugee community she has dedicated the last few years of her life serving. She cannot connect with her usual network of volunteers or access funds without her phone (she had to contact me through her mother's phone). Despite helping displaced refugees, her and her family are also displaced refugees also living out of a tent, and she cannot currently afford a replacement. Please please please help her get a new one so she can continue doing the life-saving work she has been doing. Chuffed link to support Mona.

& honestly there's no debate to be had the zendaya earrings are orders of magnitude worse than kim kardashian wearing that marilyn dress. yes that piece was a one of a kind unique textile made so specifically for marilyn monroe she had to be sewn into it. at the end of the day it was a ~70 year old usamerican cultural artefact being repurposed by an american for an american cultural event and everyone involved knows exactly where the dress came from + what happened to it + where it went afterwards. zendaya is wearing the looted (or forged) cultural heritage of a people her government is currently bombing & whose lives they have been deliberately making unliveable for decades to a movie premiere that has fuck all to do with iran. we don't know where those discs came from where they were found or by whom & we never will.
