When I was young, my brother would teach me Quran during my memorisation sessions with my brother, I would always be curious as to how much Quran he had memorised. I would ask him and he’d always make a joke out of it with a Yardie accent for jokes - I’d never get a straightforward answer. As time would go on, he’d drop me small lessons, telling me how every time I sin, a bit of my Quran memorisation would leave me.

The years went by and he made Hijra for the sake of Allah to sham. I managed to speak to him on the phone one day and said to him, “We are both grown men now so tell me honestly, how much Quran do you actually know?”. So he replied with the exact same joke he would put on all those years ago!

Although I was laughing with him, I was actually frustrated. At that moment I was told that he was a Hafidh of Quran for years. My father jumped up in shock. As did I. He was a Hafidh all those years and kept it to himself whilst his family had no idea. Now ask yourself, have you met a person like this in the 21st century? Have you met anyone who is so sincere with Allah that they don’t even tell their nearest and dearest of this beautiful deed?

In this day and age, brothers would usually hint that they are Hafidh of Quran, say it themselves or at least love for someone to point it out on their behalf. The only stories I know till this day where the people keep such a deed PRIVATE between themselves and Allah are the Sahaba and the Salaf.

On social media we get brothers titling themselves as “Shaykh” because they have a beautiful voice. We have people who record themselves reciting Quran in a beautiful manner but only to seek attention, good comments and the “Insta Fame”. This Mushaf was my brothers personal one. From it you can see the wear, tear and repair it went through as he had this close to him for many years before leaving for the sake of Allah.

The sweet thing about this is that he would tell another brother who was also a Hafidh to lead salah, saying “You lead Salah because you know more Quran than us.” When word got out that he was a Hafidh, the brother felt betrayed 😂

To say I'm sad, would be an understatement. But khayr, alhamdulillah.

Subhan Allah, during these blessed seconds, hours and days, do not forget our precious aseers out of your ad’iyat, our shuyukh and beloved brothers who have been imprisoned and tortured for speaking the haqq and spreading the deen of Islam and extinguishing the darkness of shirk from this earth, fearing non other than Allah سبحانه وتعالى, our precious and pure sisters and their cubs who have been held by the enemies of Allah, our brothers and sisters who fast the days of Ramadan although they receive no sahur nor iftar… do not forget them… and may Allah سبحانه وتعالى forgive us for our shortcomings towards them, may Allah سبحانه وتعالى hasten their releases and break the hands of the oppressors, اللهم امين يارب

Ramadān Tips:

By Shield of Taqwa

1. Limit your use of social media and spending excessive time on it socialising. Every second of Ramadān is precious, so don’t waste your time online if it won’t bring any benefit. However, online platforms should be used for spreading reminders and benefits, and one shouldn’t stay away from it completely if they are using it to benefit the Ummah.

2. Eat healthy. Don’t overeat and stay away from unhealthy foods as it will effect your quality of ‘Ibādah. Drink plenty of water when you can.

3. Don’t waste time after you break your fast like many do and excessively socialise. It’s best to stay away from such gatherings in the first place so you don’t fall into doing and speaking about harām things.

4. Always make extra effort and do more as Allāh has made ‘Ibādah so easy for us in this blessed month, alhamdulilāh.

5. Utilise the early hours of the morning well after Fajr, as they have so much barakah in them. Use this time to recite a lot of Qur’ān, memorise and reflect over it and remember Allāh.

6. Recite as much Qur’ān as possible! If you struggle with this, base your recitation around the prayer times and try to at least read a page before and after each Salāh and increase as you go. Although there’s nothing wrong with completing the Qur’ān as that’s what the righteous of the past used to do in this blessed month, don’t forget to also read the tafsīr and reflect over the meanings. This will have a greater effect on one’s Īmān, Taqwā and Salāh, inside and outside of Ramadān.

7. Get a decent amount of rest so you can wake up frequently if able in the last third of the night to do extra ‘Ibādah. There are special times where du’ā is more likely to be answered, now imagine the likelihood of it being answered in the last third of the night, during Ramadān, in Sujūd, and even more so if that night was Laylatul Qadr!

8. Seek Laylatul Qadr every night in the last ten nights, especially the odd nights, and refrain from singling one night out and ignoring the rest. Allāh will only allow the true, sincere ones who make effort with ‘Ibādah to witness this amazing, blessed night.

9. Help your brothers and sisters whenever you can with their needs and hasten to do good deeds even faster in this month.

10. Be humble in front of Allāh and turn to Him in repentance every day and night of Ramadān. Only Allāh knows how many sins we have accumulated over the year so we need to beg Allāh for His forgiveness during these blessed days and nights, and think well of Allāh always.

These are a few tips, but there is so much more that can be done to maximise our ‘Ibādah in this month. Also don’t forget to make plenty of du’ā for the entire ummah; those living and those in their graves.

May Allāh accept our worship and help us truly give this blessed month its rights.

The beauty of dua is that you don't need to express exactly what you desire. Ibrahim (as) did not ask Allah to put out the fire or make it cool. Yunus (as) did not ask Allah to remove him from the belly of the whale. Musa (as) did not ask for a home, wife & job after fleeing from Egypt. They were simply vulnerable before Allah, placing their complete reliance in Him and He blessed them, saved them and elevated them. Allah knows what you desire and require even when you don't. So rely upon Allah, because whoever relies upon Allah. Allah will be sufficient for him<3

If you abandoned the voluntary fasting for your appetite.

And delayed the night prayer for your tiredness.

And left the Sunnah prayers for your hastiness.

And gave up charity for your need.

And abandoned the Qur'ān for your business.

And abandoned righteousness for your laziness.

And delayed repentance because of your negligence.

What race to Jannah are you talking about?

One thing I've slowly come to realise,

You cannot distance yourself from this dunya, without a profound disappointment in it.

No matter how much we want to hate this world, to not overindulge, to not be extravagant, to not drown our hearts in its love, to not tether our hearts to other people; we cannot achieve it until we are met with a profound disappointment.

This dunya was meant to delude and distract, and no matter how much we want to escape from it, there is a level of intrinsic attraction and temptation and love for the dunya there in our hearts.

And it is only when we are battered and broken by it, when our knees are bent in sujud to Allah, when we have our hearts in our palms for no one but Allah, when all strings are cut and all bridges are burnt except the one that leads to Allah — it is only then that we can truly remove the dunya from our hearts; when we no longer crave it, no longer chase it, no longer see any value in it.

So whenever we're disappointed by anything or anyone in this world, let it be a reminder that Allah is the only constant in our lives. That this untethering is what will truly set us free from all the worldly pain. That this isn't our home, but only a journey towards it.

How many claim they'd throw their souls for the sake of Allah while they remain clinging tightly to their wealth.

Ibn Al Qayyim رحمه الله said:

فبذل النفس آخر المراتب، فإن العبد يبذل ماله أولاً، يقي به نفسه، فإذا لم يبق له مالُه بذل نفسه، فكان تقديم المال على النفس في الجهاد مطابقًا للواقع

Sacrificing oneself is the last of the ranks, for the slave sacrifices his wealth first, protecting himself by it, so when there no longer remains for him wealth to spend, he sacrifices his soul, so prioritizing wealth over oneself in J is in accordance to reality.

What is the meaning of our being a Muslim if we don’t sacrifice perpetually?

Sacrificing our little choices for a better gain in the Akhirah.

Sacrificing a habit or a desire that Allaah dislikes.

Sacrificing a part of sleep to stand in front of the Lord of Might جل وعلا

Sacrificing the ‘urge’ to be seen and covering for His sake.

Sacrificing your cravings and living with the minimum.

Sacrificing your wealth to give in His cause.

Sacrificing your wishes and desires for the future of the Ummah.

Sacrificing your home and family to go forth to build glory and to take the revenge for the cries of the oppressed.

Sacrificing your limbs to reclaim the Shahadah you proclaimed.

Sahabah sacrificed their entire lives, yet today we are reluctant to sacrifice our comforts, little or giant.

Sacrifice is a price that needs to be paid off in full to enter the same Jannah as that of Sahabah.

Being a Muslim comes with a lot of sacrifice — this is what your Deen demands from you.

The choice is yours. Will not take a step ahead?
