Thackery Binx // 29 // Bartender // Magical
Character description:
Thackery used to have pride in their hard work when it came to taking care of their sister. They didn’t have anything against their parents putting the responsibility of their family on him, even if Thackery never got the recognition for it all. Deep down, they understood that their parents had to work hard to take care of them financially. It was a lot of pressure, though, constantly feeling the need to be perfect and to hold their family together, and sometimes they needed a break and to feel like their own person. They learned the hard way though, that stepping away and being carefree would only lead to disaster.
Binx thinks about that night he lost Emily every single day, even if they can’t seem to fully piece everything together. Magic had been a taboo topic to Binx until the night they met the Sanderson sisters, and ever since, they have become sort of hyper-fixated with it all. They hated everything about magic and wanted it gone, but a small part of them also wanted to find someone else with magic that could help them get rid of the curse, and to also help them find their sister. So many times, he was tempted to confront the witches, but they feel there’s too much at stake to do it alone. For now, they would lay low, investigate the Sanderson sisters and the magic of the town, search for clues of where Emily could be, and keep an eye on the others who have had the unfortunate circumstance of being affected by the witches.
Headcanons:
They prefer to go by Binx more often now, because Thackery just makes them think of Emily and their parents. Thackery just feels part of their past self, but if they ever find Emily and can return home, the name won’t hurt like it currently does.
Binx hates partying after that was the reason Emily disappeared. Though, that doesn’t mean they don’t indulge a little bit, either. They need something to make them feel human after being a cat for weeks at a time, after all. They just make sure to never overindulge, and to never let his guard down, like a cat sleeping with one eye open at all times. They are that responsible drunk that makes sure to cut themself off at an appropriate time and makes sure to get home safe.
Binx is extremely intelligent, but having to take care of himself and their sister most of the time, it didn’t give them much time to focus on studies. No one really realized his intelligence in school because he always had missing assignments and poor grades, but they were a decent test taker and enjoyed learning. Unfortunately, they were never able to graduate high school thanks to the curse, but they slowly learned to accept their current lifestyle. Working at the bar wasn’t too bad, anyway, and living with a friend was easy with the half-cat lifestyle, often not home for weeks at a time. They do love to learn more through reading and researching at the library, though!
As soon as they realized the full moon was when they would turn, they started to keep track of the moon cycles. They have a journal with all kinds of useful data for their predicament: each time he has turned, what they can remember each time they’re a cat, how long they were a cat, and even tries to make connections and find patterns to how long they stay as a cat. They try to plan and schedule surrounding the full moon, because they know they can’t focus on their responsibilities in cat form, even if they can still talk.
The length of times they are a cat changes every full moon, and Binx has yet to find a pattern as to why they can be a cat for a few days at times, and other times for weeks. The longest they were a cat was for three weeks, only leaving a week-ish to enjoy being human before it happened again.
Binx slowly adapted to cat life, though they don’t remember much of it. Each time it all feels like a foggy dream to them, but bits and pieces they can recall.
They have learned some interesting things in cat form, though, more than he can even remember. A lot of people use their magic freely around them in cat form, not thinking twice if a cat witnesses it. When he feels more conscious than usual in cat form, they like to investigate and keep an eye on those they’ve seen use magic.
Binx isn’t sure if cats just recognize them, or if they sense the magic that cursed them to be a cat, but even when they aren’t in cat form, cats will seem to follow them. They refuse to have a pet cat, especially since they are hardly home enough to take care of one, but they do pet any strays that come by or will give them some food and water.
Binx hasn’t told anyone about their curse. Part of them is ashamed of it because it is a reminder that they failed Emily. They often come up with excuses for their frequent absences, including health related things and travel.
Pansexual but isn’t one looking for anything romantic. They have too much focus on finding Emily and exposing the Sanderson sisters to even think about falling in love. They will do random hook ups the rare times they decide to drink and take a break from the pressure they put on themself, though. They haven’t even considered the possibility of randomly catching feelings for someone, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Either has dreams about magic and curses, Emily, or about themself in cat form. Sometimes they feel like they might be going a little crazy from the curse, because they have had moments where they find cat food at random places when he isn’t a cat, and it makes the hairs on the back of their neck stand up every time. It’s as if someone is mocking them about the curse, and they have a feeling they know who.
Basically a protective, cautious, sneaky cat detective that hates magic. But underneath that, when able to let their guard down and be normal for once, they can be funny, sarcastic and fun to be around. After all these years, though, Binx still doesn’t really know who they are or where they belong.
