I'm seeing some reports that the fantasy artist Emmanuel just passed away. One of the artists who helped hone the look of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, I was especially a fan of his cover for the Fiend Folio, which I consider one of the sacred texts of AD&D. One of the many guides I used to check out from the library and draw monsters from.

Thanks and rest in peace, Emmanuel.

I've never been able to learn much about the artist who was always credited only as "Emmanuel." Apparently he was Emmanuel Papadopoulos, and passed away in June, 2026.

The original storyboards for the North American 2010 commercial for Super Mario Galaxy 2 contain a piece of Super Mario Bros. fan art from DeviantArt.

Top: the storyboards, recovered from internal files of the ad agency. Middle: zooming in on the frame with the TV reveals an image of Super Mario Bros. in 3D. Bottom: this is the 2008 fan art "Nintendo 3D Mario" by DeviantArt user "NES--still-the-best", which was extremely popular and commonly reposted online at that time.
