biggest hetero lie i’ve been told: fighting is a part of a healthy romantic relationship
Disagreements are a part of every healthy relationship. Having bad days when you’re not your best self is a part of every healthy relationship. Fighting, disrespect, and insults? Those are not healthy at all.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ the fact that some people don’t get this is staggering.
Rebloging because everyone needs to see this
Guys! This week I get to actually work in the field and handle these adorable little birds all while continuing my research!
Look at the tiny bird!
Brown-headed Cowbird (right, male - left and below female)
Fun fact about these guys, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds.
Brood parasitism (which is what it’s called when a bird lays its eggs in the nest of another species) is very bad for the other species! When this happens, the adults will incubate the cowbird egg and since cowbirds usually have quicker incubation times, their eggs hatch before the host species do. This means that the cowbird baby gets all the food and the host babies do not and pretty much always die as a result.
Cowbirds are one of the main reasons that the Black Capped Vireo–
which is this handsome fellow–were added to the Endangered Species List in 1987. At that time, there was a parasitism rate of around 90%, meaning that 90% of their nests had cowbirds eggs in them.
BUT!
There is good news for these cuties, thanks to conservation efforts on Fort Hood (which is where I work with these little nuggets) and Fort Sill, the Black Capped Vireo was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2018. And while there are still instances of brood parasitism, the rate has dropped drastically.
