Guys, We Need Your Help
Today something awful happened at the sanctuary (Midwest Avian Adoption and Rescue Services). A car slammed into the walls of the room with the cockatoos, smashing into the cage of Cowboy, the sweetest Moluccan Cockatoo you will ever meet, while he was still inside. Thankfully, due to the quick action of a volunteer, Cowboy is unharmed. However, the car also damaged a gas pipe in the wall which started leaking gas throughout the building. All of the birds managed to be safely evacuated and no one has shown signs of illness from the gas. We are incredibly lucky that everyone is alright. There are so many birds and so many cages that needed to be moved quickly.
Two of the rooms have been deemed as structurally unstable. Although the gas leak has been fixed, we can’t use much of the space that we need and so we’ve had to Tetris the cages back inside. It is going to be very expensive to repair this damage. The driver of the vehicle drove off immediately, but we do have a license plate number so I hope the perpetrator is caught. We are asking for as much help as we can get here. These birds are so incredibly important to all of us. They are our family.
If you have anything, even the smallest amount, please consider donating. If you are unable, please signal boost to those who can.
(^only some of our large numbered flock)
It is important to note here that we are not looking for homes for these birds, even though all the offers are greatly appreciated. Despite the name, this is a permanent sanctuary for all the birds here, most of whom are special needs.

This is the official fundraising page, but you can also make donations directly to the MAARS paypal on the website.

It would mean the world to me if you could help. I hope all of you and your birds have a safe night.
Holy cow you guys! I wasn’t expecting this post to reach so many eyes! You are all amazing. If you were able to make a donation, thank you so so so so so much. If you were a signal booster, I also love you so so much. We’ve managed to raise a little over $10,000 in such a short amount of time. This will be an expensive repair and everything helps. We are entirely volunteer and donation-run, no one at this sanctuary makes any money off of working here, including the incredibly hard-working women who run the place. Every penny donated to the sanctuary goes right to the birds.
I also have some really good news! The man who ran into the building has been caught! You can read about the update here. It’s unclear whether or not he will be in any way financially responsible, but he hasn’t gotten away scot-free here.
(This is Kelly. She’s super old, but hella feisty and will eat like no tomorrow)
Again, thank you!
Signal boosting this for if any of my followers can help out!! Cos like wtf?! I’m glad the culprit was caught though
Hey! I just saw a couple of your posts about Andreas and Diego's sizes and im hella surprised! Andreas is so small, my Quaker is the same size as my sun conure, both of which are about 2x the size of my turquoise green cheek! Such small borbs you are truly blessed
Hmmm I think I’m gonna have to ask my avian vet next time I see her if she truly is that small as I’ve never had any others to compare her to! Cos right now it’s sounding like Andreas is teeny weeny or maybe Diego is just big than I thought ahaha
Ah interesting, I know that crimson bellied are a bit bigger than green cheeks. But now I'm wondering if your quaker is also maybe a small bud for his species or is he just average size? I'm just curious 😊
Andreas is on the smaller side I think. She’s weighs usually around 95-100g and also hilariously Diego is also a runt as I’m pretty sure he’s smaller than my mum’s green cheek but I haven’t had them side by side to compare. I seem to just have all the small birds!
Are your crimson bellied conure and your quaker parrot about the same size or does it just look like that in the picture?
Yeah visually they’re about the same size! Diego is a bit slimmer and he weighs like 20% less than Andreas from memory!
She hate her brother
Hi, I was just wondering if you had any recommendations for birbs for someone who's never owned one before? I was thinking about getting one at some point and I was wondering your opinion on it (if you don't mind ofc!).
This is always a very hard question to answer because it depends on so many things. Andreas was my first bird that was mine but I grew up around a bunch of different birds, which helped me gain experience.
Even the typical ‘beginner’ birds like cockatiels and budgies live extremely long lives. So really I feel it’s a matter of making sure you are prepared and well researched!
I’d say do some research into what kind of birds you like and also personality and then just do even further research! There are heaps of facebook groups dedicated to specific bird species, which I’ve found to be an invaluable resource as no only can you ask questions but you often see the good and the bad things of species.
Some things to consider are:How big a cage can you get?How stable is your living situation? Are you likely to move overseas or travel a lot in the future? How many hours a day can you spend with your bird? How much noise can you and those living with you tolerate?
There are much more things to consider and remember that even if you do a lot of research that sometimes things don’t always go as predicted. When I got Diego I regretted it for ages in the beginning as he cried a lot when I wasn’t with him and he took time away from Andreas.
Sorry it’s a pretty non answer but I hope it helps haha
I think she broke

Hi! I love Quaker parrots and was thinking about getting a baby. But there seem to be mixed opinions about keeping them with other birds because they can be agressive. In your experience, would it be possible to put them with a cockatiel? Thank you!
Andreas actually grew up with my mum’s cockatiels! But strictly in their own cages. Quakers can be territorial and while I’m sure someone out there has had success I personally wouldn’t risk them sharing cages.
Andreas as a baby used to get a long the the tiels and they’d actually preen each other until one day the male tiel actually chased her away and from that point they weren’t friends anymore. She never went out of her way to attack them but if they came too close she would chase them away. So as long as you aren’t hoping for them to be super close it should be doable under supervision!
I have a blue quaker, his name is Wiggles, and I have a female green cheek conure whose name is Olive, so I love your blog and your birbs. Tell Andreas and Diego that I love them pls <3
Oh I forgot to reply to this but THANK YOU :D I HAVE TOLD THEM THIS AND GAVE ANDREAS A KISS FOR YOU!! Diego was not in the mood for kisses :’(
