Friends and enemies consider
Pros
- Textile arts! (Needle lace is fun and good and not as hard as it looks and actually only one stitch I prommy <3<3)
- Collaborative community artworks! (Google radiance maggie hensel brown. Bask in its glory. Don't you want to be involved in something like that?)
- The pacific northwest! (I'm not American I don't know what this means. But you don't have to be American either anyone can contribute)
- It doesn't cost any money! (Except like thread if you need it and maybe postage but that's like $2 all up if you get thread second hand)
- No commitments! You don't have to sign up for anything! (Just post them your triangle(s) before mid-August if you so desire)
- Salmon! (Salmon optional)
Cons
- None whatsoever I <3 needle lace and contributing to things larger than myself
Disclaimer I'm not affiliated with this project whatsoever I just think it's cool and Maggie is cool and more people should try needle lace okay love you bye
Actively running an activity in class so I cant read about it myself but i need to know did they find his bones in the archive or did they just use a previously collected sample
okay. official henry peter peglar DIY grave by the frozen shoreline inventory as per mcclintock:
his own wallet (nigh assuredly organized by himself to hold his id papers / easily verifiable career details in the center, which was surrounded by his accounts of the arctic, which was surrounded by his poetry, which was wax-sealed and then surrounded by a newspaper about maritime casualties that he had apparently been saving since 1845, which was then surrounded by leather, which he then died on top of to keep safe (he must have known he was dying there. he must have known someone would come searching eventually. this is not the work of a man who believes he was ever going to make it home again)
ink stained cuff of his shirt (do not forget he must have been carrying around a bottle of frozen ink and thawing it out to write at all in the first place)
TOM'S NECKSCARF(?) still done in the steward uniform standard fashion
folding haircomb with nervous scratches along the lacquer edge where a thumb would rest if one held it closed in their hand
cloth covered coat buttons
one single pearl button
clothes brush
half sovereign coin from 1844 (year he was going to retire and open a bar)
sixpence from 1831
aaaaaaand he walked 130 km away from terror camp to see the ocean again before lying down to die.

National maritime museum greenwich I am once again asking who told you those gloves are cotton and are you sure they can be trusted
Granted I don't know what cotton yarn manufacturered with pre-1845 methods and left in the arctic weather for 4 years and then some archive for 175 years for would look like but
what is the truth?
Have been reminded of this post and have been doing a teeny tiny bit of reading about cotton and cashmere in mid 1800s Britian and definitely cotton was more prevalent and affordable but cashmere certainly wasn't rare, just expensive. There were possibly also many "cashmere" yarns that were really a blend of fibres. Knowing the true fibre content of the gloves could go a long way towards narrowing down who they belonged to. Of course it could be neither of those things they could be plain sheep's wool I don't know how much Sherard Osborn knew about fibre identification. And it's not like rich people didn't also wear cotton of course they did cotton was everyone's* favourite for many things but! If they're not cotton that could lead in an interesting direction. And that's barely taking into account the fact that they're two left hands and the question of who made them and how. I need to examine other extant glove examples from that time I need to break into the nmm I need to chew through 14 tonnes of sheet metal. Unrelatedly - the shift in political & economic value of domestic vs foreign/imported everyday textile (and everything else) production over time is fascinating. People used to get medals from the king for kidnapping sheep
Sat down to do the one (1) assignment I have to do but then I thought wait I'll just take care of this one other thing real quick and now it's been 8 hours and my computer has an entire new operating system and my assignment is still not done
I had to make this post in order to exorcise it from my brain in the hopes that I'll be able to see the original again without thinking this for the rest of the day after
(he's telling me to partake in sodomy)
