Personally I do think that sometimes non-hockey fans can end up mischaracterizing Shane and Ilya because they don't know enough about hockey/hockey playstyles

The Ilya we see in Heated rivalry would not be throwing the first punch, he's not an enforcer. Ilya is a star center and a Pest. He wouldn't be doing his job correctly if he was punching players every other game, it would end up with not enough ice time to let him be the playmaker he's paid to be.

But being a pest can be playmaking! Find a player to bait, emotionally push them just enough that they try to fight you, and then get the fuck out of there before the ref gives you both penalties. This gets your team the power play. There is probably someone on Ilya's line dedicated to helping him get out of the fights he starts, and finishing them for him!

I also think this is also something that Shane would respect. Ilya is good at it and it's a good strategy for his team. I don't think Shane would see it as some dirty tactic, because Shane probably thinks everyone with a brain can see it for what it is! He probably thinks everyone should be able to see that being an asshole is a tactic for Ilya, that it's something to ignore and not fall for, that it's a strategy and not personal beef.

I think Shane's more disappointed when a Metro falls for it. Shane sees it as Ilya set up a Looney Toons ass obvious trap and one of his teammates ran into it. Why be mad at Bugs Bunny when you can be mad at your defenceman for falling for a fucking Bugs Bunny trap.

Yep, Ilya’s not the guy who throws punches or gets hit by them, that’s an enforcer like Ryan Price. It’s pretty clearly stated in the book. From Heated Rivalry chapter 9:

I think this confusion stems from the few hockey scenes in the show where Ilya checks people into boards (notably Shane 😈). But we don’t see any actual fights on screen and so we don’t see an enforcer in action, only Ilya shoving people.. which is definitely NOT a fight.

"You don't wanna be here."

Steve pauses in the doorway of Tommy's bedroom, his backpack halfway off his shoulders. His eyes narrow as he frowns, "Why not? I said I was comin' over."

"Yeah, but that was before Mom got mad," Tommy sighs dramatically. "She's mad at everyone and she said she doesn't want to hear a peep from us until Dad gets home. No one is allowed to leave their room."

Steve's frown deepens.

"But!" Tommy jumps. "You should talk to her!"

"Why?"

"Because you're never in trouble," He replies. "You can tell Mom that I'm sorry and it wasn't my fault. It's Tyler's fault. Or Theo's 'cause he's the oldest. Or Travis', just not mine."

Steve frowns more.

He gets in trouble all the time at home and at school but...his mom doesn't talk to him either when she's mad at him and he hates it.

He's gotten pretty good at making it up to her so, "I'll try to fix it."

"Awesome," Tommy cheers. "Remember, it wasn't my fault. I just pushed him. I didn't break the wall."

Steve slides his backpack off his shoulders the rest of the way and digs around for what he needs inside before heading back downstairs. He follows the sound of Tommy's mom to the dining room where she stood in front of a head-sized hole in the wall, "Hi, Miss Maria."

"Hi, Stevie," She says, not sounding particularly angry. "I didn't hear you come in."

"It's 'cause I’m like a ninja," He says."I got you something. It's a present. From Tommy."

He presents her - "A rock?"

"It's a lucky rock," Steve informs her. "The weird kid at the park that bites m- Tommy says that it has good luck magic. He says that there's not a lot of magic in the world no more so you have to be real careful who you share it with when you find some."

"The weird kid said that he's got a lot of good luck already," Steve continues. "So he gave me - I mean, Tommy - this magic rock. He said you have to carry it with you all the time and if you squeeze it real tight, it'll steal your sad away. That's good 'cause you don't want to be sad anyways."

He pauses and adds, "Now I'm giving - I mean, Tommy is giving you the magic. As a present 'cause he's sorry and he loves you. Do you like it?"

"This is a very nice rock and a very thoughtful gift," She says. "I think it was really nice of your friend to give it to you, Steve. I think you should keep it."

"But - but it's a present," Steve says. "It's a present from Tommy so you stop being mad at him."

"Steve, I’m not-"

"Take it."

"I’m not go-"

"Take my stupid rock and stop being mad at Tommy!" Steve snaps. "Stop ignoring him! It hurts people's feelings when their mama ignores them and-"

"Hey," Maria says firmly. "Steve, I’m not ignoring Tommy. I’m not ignoring anyone. I sent the boys to their rooms so they could think about their actions and to calm down."

"I’m not happy that they damaged the wall," She concedes. "One of them could have gotten hurt and we're lucky that they didn't, but I’m not mad at them. I’m disappointed."

"That's worse!" Steve complains, scrubbing at his dry eyes. "Tommy said you told him not to leave 'til Mr David got here."

"That's true," She says. "When Mr David comes home, we're going to discuss their punishment."

"What if he doesn't come home for a long time?" Steve asks. "What if Tommy had to stay in his room all by himself forever? He's gonna get hungry."

"Mr David will be home in fifteen minutes, hon," She assures. "I wouldn't make them stay in there all day otherwise. Is that something that happens at your house?"

"I don't want Tommy to get punished."

"Me neither," She admits. "But there are consequences to our actions and sometimes the consequences aren't very fun but they're necessary. They teach us not to do things that can hurt us."

She gestures Steve over to her. He comes easily, allowing her to pick him up into a hug. She presses a kiss to the top of his head and asks, "What kind of punishment do you think my boys should get?"

"I dunno," Steve shrugs. "Just don't take their allowance away."

"Deal," She says, feeling a little unease at the request. She pushes the concern to the side for now with a hum and asks, "You think I can fix this hole?"

"No away," Steve says. "Your wall is a goner."

Steve falls from the top of the popularity ladder, hits every rung face first on the way down, and has no one to sit with at lunch so...

"No."

"What do you mean no?"

"I mean, no," Steve says, opening his locker. "No thanks. Go away."

Steve Harrington looks like someone tried to kick his face into the back of his skull. He looks like he can't take a deep breath without getting a glimpse of the afterlife, and yet. He's saying - "No. No??? No thanks, he says. I asked if you wanted to sit at my table at lunch and you say no? What the fuck does that mean?"

"That's a great grasp on the English language," Steve says, hobbling off to eat lunch alone. "I can see why you're repeating senior year."

"Dick."

All anyone can talk about the next day is how Steve is no longer on the basketball team. Eddie asks again because, "It's prime real estate, right there. At the best table in town."

"You think the best table in town is a wobbly cafeteria table that's permanently sticky?"

"I meant to eat at."

"The best table in town is in this school?" Steve clarifies. "Not at like, Enzo's?"

"Sit at my table during lunch."

"Sure," Steve says easily and then goes to eat in his car.

The next day, he's not at lunch. The day after that, he's not at school. Back in his car the following day, and then - "Get your ass off my hood, Munson."

"Come sit at my table," He demands, not moving from the hood of the car. "You're not better than us and you have no friends. Those are the only qualifications you need so let's go."

Steve doesn't bother to give him a response, just unlocks his car and slowly, very slowly lowers down into the driver's seat. He's speaking through his teeth in a pain-laced voice, "Do I look like I need friends, Munson?"

"Yeah."

Steve rolls his eyes, "Wasn't aware you hated the friends you have."

"I don't-"

"Because otherwise, it's pretty shitty that you're trying to make them targets by inviting me to hang around," Steve says. "In fact, maybe you should thanking me that I’m taking all the loser attention off you and your...loser friends."

Eddie tilts his head, let's what Steve said settle between them, and then grins, "Awe."

"You care about us," Eddie coos. "Steve Harrington: Nerd Protector. You're trying to keep us safe, cute."

Steve doesn't respond.

That title is weirdly accurate and he doesn't know how he feels about it so, "Get out of here."

"Sure, Harrington."

The next day, Steve walks out to the car with his lunch and...There are four nerds hanging around his car.

"Told the guys why you're being difficult," Eddie says when he gets closer. "We voted on it and you lost. Welcome to Hellfire."

Eddie and Steve have been dating for three months when Eddie introduces Steve to Wayne. Afterwards, Steve is just like, "Oh, wow. Wow. Oh god, he hates me. He hates me, doesn't he?"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Eddie asks. "He shook your hand and invited you to stay for dinner."

"Yeah, god. It's so obvious. He hates me," Steve stresses. "Do you think he's going to make you break up with me? He hated me so much. Geez."

"Steve, he doesn't-"

"I've dated a lot of girls, Eddie. That's how dads act when they hate you," He swears. "Fuck, I gotta get out of here. Eddie, I have to go."

"Steve, calm down," Eddie starts. "He doesn't - don't go out the - yep, out the window. There you go. Okay...Bye. Love you!"

Eddie waits two full minutes before he walks out of his bedroom back into the rest of the house and asks, "What the hell, Wayne? You hate my boyfriend?"

"I never said that," Wayne scoffs. "I like the kid. Said he was good for ya. Does that sound like I hate 'em?"

"No," Eddie breaths out. "No, I knew he was making no sense. God, Steve is so weird. I love him, you know?"

"Told him that I loved him," He continues, grinning from behind his hair. "Told him when he was climbing out the window."

"He say it back?"

"No, I don't think he's realized what I said yet. When do you think-"

There's an insistent knock at the door.

Wayne grabs his keys to leave, "Probably about now, I bet."

Fic where Eddie starts following Steve around. Everywhere. Every time Steve turns around, he's there with his little notebook. Writing stuff down like, "What is this? What's happening?"

Eddie lifts his pen only to gesture for Steve to continue with what he's doing, and then he touches pen back to paper. Steve is just, "Dude, stop. What are you even doing?"

"Research."

"On me?!" He asks. "Why?"

"To learn, obviously," Eddie sighs. "Pretend I'm not here."

Steve thinks about it and...oh.

Eddie is trying to be cool and he doesn't know how so he came to Steve. That's obviously the only thing that makes sense here and like, wow.

That's so...cool.

Steve's like a role model. A mentor! He can teach this weirdo freak how to be normal, and friendly, and popular.

That's actually kind of an honor. Right?

Steve smiles to himself, "Okay, uh. Cool."

He lets Eddie follow him around, lets him take his notes. He asks if he wants to ask him any questions but Eddie says this is more of an observational thing.

Steve gets it.

He's a visual learner too.

And then Steve learns - visibly - that Eddie wasn't doing research to figure out how to be popular. He was doing research on-

"OCD," Steve reads the letters projected on the board while Eddie sets up his psych presentation. "You said you had to do a project on a disorder you observed."

"Yep."

"And then you followed me around for two weeks."

"Yeah," Eddie nods. "You were my subject. I observed you."

"Right..." Steve says. "I don't have OCD."

Eddie pauses.

He tilts his head, "You didn't know?"

Post-Season 2 AU where Steve and Eddie are secretly dating, and Eddie is like, "Man, I wish I could tell my friends about you. They'd never believe I got this lucky."

Much to Eddie's surprise because Steve is deeply paranoid about anyone finding out, he responds like, "Then tell them."

"What?"

"They keep your secret," Steve shrugs. "Surely they'd keep mine too, right? If you trust them, tell them."

So Eddie goes to band practice and he tells them. And they don't believe him.

At all.

To prove that he's telling the truth, Eddie tries to get Steve to admit it when they're at school the next day but they have strict rules about never interact in public.

Steve straight up ignores him.

This admittedly does make it look like he's making everything up.

Steve, a barista, looks up at the sound of the bell over the door and - "No. Hell no, absolutely not. Get out of here. Scram!"

Robin, also a barista, watches as this guy in a red scarf turns on his heel and leaves looking confused and dejected. She turns to Steve and asks, "Who's that? What did they do?"

"That guy?" Steve asks. "I have no idea who that is. Never meet him before."

"...Why'd you kick him out?"

"Wanted to," Steve shrugs. "Honestly, I didn't think he'd listen."

Robin is just, "...?"

Five minutes later Eddie walks in, orders his usual, and sits down to wait for his date - a guy in one of his classes who always wears a red scarf.

A minute ticks by, then another, and then - "Hey, mind if I sit with you while I’m on break. It's a bit crowded everywhere else."

The cafe is mostly empty but Eddie is pretty sure he got stood up and this cute barista is well, cute so - "Sure."

"Cool," Steve smiles. "Have you tried these muffins? I actually made them and, uh. Bought two of them...by accident. Want one?"

He lost a little steam there in the middle but recovered by the end, Steve thinks because Eddie smiles at him and accepts one of the muffins.

"I was supposed to meet someone," Eddie tells him at the end of Steve's lunch break. "Glad I didn't."

Steve kisses Eddie.

He's a freshman in high school and this nice drug dealer guy is showing him how to smoke a joint so he doesn't beef it in front of all his friends, and...he's kinda cute.

And then Steve kisses him.

And Eddie kisses back.

And they're making out at a random table in the woods until - "Whoa."

"You okay?"

"Sorry," Steve says. "Sorry, man. I'm actually going to do the whole gay thing - bi thing? I think I still like girls - in a couple of years. I want to be popular first."

"...We can still do this if you're in the closet. I can keep a secret."

"I’m not in the closet. I’m just going to be - whatever I am later."

Eddie is just, "... You're scheduling being gay?"

Steve thinks about it and, "...Yes."

"You can't do that."

"Um, yeah I can. Free country."

"What," Eddie starts and stops. He takes a breath and asks, "Do you have 'be a homosexual' penciled in your calendar four years from now?"

"I don't think they make multi-year calendars like that."

Because that's the only issue with this conversation, not pushing your gay awakening down the road. Eddie can't even point out that all of this is absurd because Steve is just like, fingerguns, "Anyways, if you're free in a couple years, hit me up."

"For what, a meeting on the gay agenda?"

"Or to make out," Steve shrugs as he packs up his stuff. "You're a good kisser. See ya, Munson."

Eddie doesn't hit Steve up.

And then Steve shows up after the Upside Down tries to eat them with an old planner like, "Hey, man. I think we have a meeting."

Of course.

Of-fucking-course, today is the day that his van decides to shit itself in the school parking lot. He can’t get the engine to turn over and-

“Oh, fuck off,” Eddie says to the sky when he feels the first raindrop splatter against his head. He says to the sky, “I’ve been cursed by god.”

He sighs.

He’s ready to make the long trek home when he nearly jumps out of his bones by a horn blaring. He whirls around and - “What the fuck, Harrington?!”

“Need a ride?”

The fucking nonchalance on this guy, Eddie thinks. He almost asks why the fuck Steve Harrington would give a freak like him a ride but… “Yeah.”

They’re not even a half block from the school when Eddie sees red and blue lights in the rearview. His eyes travel to the sky where the god who cursed him is probably laughing before he asks, “You got a taillight out or something?”

“No,” Steve says and then…doesn’t pull over?

He continues down the block, flips his blinker on, and turns. And. Just. Keeps. Going.

Eddie twists around and, yeah.

He’s not hallucinating the cop or the lights. He twists back around, asks if Steve is going to pull over, and gets no answer. So.

Yeah. Cursed.

He’s now an unwitting participant in the world’s most casual police chase.

They come up on a red light for the first time and Steve pulls the Beemer to a stop.

Eddie watches in the rearview mirror as Hopper parks, gets out of his truck, and then walks up to the driver’s side window. He taps on the glass, “Roll down the window, Harrington.”

“Oh. Hey, Hop!” Steve says, rolling down the window like Hopper hasn’t been following them for the last six blocks. “I didn’t see you back there.”

“Yeah,” Hopper says, reaching into the car and pulling something out of the driver’s side door. “I bet.”

When he reaches back into the car, he shoves a pair of thick-lensed glasses onto Steve’s face. He gets a bitchy look back and says, “Now you will.”

Big fan of everyone who reads my kid Steve ramblings agreeing that Eddie never stops believing he met a mythical creature in the Hawkins woods. He just forgets that it was Steve.

I think that Steve eventually thinks that Eddie was an imaginary friend because Tommy thought that Eddie was Steve’s imaginary friend.
