Fernweh
Origin: German
(n.) a crave for travel; being homesick for a place you’ve never been.
ä, ö, ü, and ß
To any non-Germans out there:
You can’t just add or take away the dots above ä, ö, and ü willy-nilly. It changes the whole sound of the letter and the meaning of the word!!! Also: “ß” is NOT “B” !!!
“Schwül” (humid) and “schwul” (gay) are not the same! “Scheiße” (shit) and “Scheibe” (slice, disk) are also not the same!!!
Here’s what to do instead:
ä = ae, e.g. Fähre = Faehre
ö = oe, e.g. können = koennen
ü = ue, e.g. Tür = Tuer
ß = ss, e.g. Straße = Strasse
Deutsche Weihnachtsmusik meiner Kindheit
Weihnachten war als ich klein war sehr von Rolf Zuckowski (dts. Musiker, vor allem für seine Kindellieder bekannt) geprägt. Besonders dieses Album: "Stille Nächte - helles Licht" (weniger Kinder-auslegt)

Abendrot
Origin: German
(n.) the color of the sky while the sun is setting.
Lieber arm dran als Arm ab!
arm (adj) dran sein (v) - to be unfortunate/in a bad position/suffering
Arm (n) dran - attached arm
Arm (n) ab - detached arm
dran <—> ab - attached <—> detached
A German idiom replied to someone wbo claims that they are "suffering" by using the expression arm dran sein (most often used in a sarcastic/exaggerated sense). Arm dran (being unfortunate) gets semantically switched to having an arm and then compared to the (obv. less fortunate) not having an arm.

OMG GUYS (learning German) I FOUND A THING!
(Day 20/50 days of immersion)
There is a ONLINE LIBRARY of German books, magazines, movies and more. It's FREE (and legal I guess since it's the Goethe Institute who's behind it) for people learning German who don't live in Germany (from what I understood at least)!
Goethe-Institut e. V. . Digitale Medien wie E-Books, E-Paper, E-Music, E-Audios und E-Videos ausleihen und herunterladen.
(You can navigate the site in English too if needed)
It's by the Goethe Institute (them again! If you're learning German you might have already heard of them).
Setting up an account is a little tricky (need to create an account then go to the settings of the account on the Goethe Institute website to "activate" the library on the other website or something) but then you can access the books and other resources... for FREE and LEGALLY?
Basically it's like a library, you can borrow books/other resources for a certain amount of time if they aren't already borrowed by someone else or you have to wait!
thank you duolingo
Christmas is just a few days away! Hopefully everyone has had some delicious, Christmas treats!♥️
That might mean... * We skip the holidays altogether * We poke our heads in for dessert, but we don't stay for dinner * We don't go to Christmas service/Mass (or whatever other worship service) * We buy gifts only for immediate family and close friends * We get our loved ones experiences instead of things * We make gifts * We don't DIY our decorations or gifts, or only DIY some of them * We get a smaller tree or none at all * We decline the invitation to that cookie swap that will have us making 3 dozen each of 3 different kinds of cookies * We don't invite certain people * We get smaller gifts for people * We limit the number of invitations we accept, and the number of events we host * We don't buy gifts for anyone past puberty * We walk away from conversations that aren't going anywhere good. * We hang up the phone or log off Skype/Zoom/whatever * We put ourselves on a budget * We learn to say "no" and set boundaries * We don't go see certain family members * We give ourselves permission to just let it be a normal day * We ask for help, and we learn to (graciously) accept that help * We make the gift-giving a "Secret Santa" kinda thing so we only have to get one gift * We send cards and letters only to close friends and family, instead of to everyone and their dog * We accept that our holidays might not look like a Norman Rockwell painting or a Hallmark movie or whatever's going on on Pinterest, and that's okay * We make space for grief and other messy feelings * We cancel plans and don't feel guilty about it * We make time to rest
