when you've just turned 19 and you beat osaka, kerber, svitolina, and sabalenka to make the USO final as an unseeded player with one 250 title, only to lose in the final to a player two months younger than you who's beaten no-one of note but sakkari and bencic to get there, and so she becomes the story, and then neither of you ever do anything big again but at least you're not mocked quite as much as she is 1) because you're not as famous, but 2) also because you've at least managed to win two more small titles and haven't spent a large part of the years since outside the top 100. and also neither of you have played each other since, so it's not like you've at least got that rivalry that was so promised at the USO going for you. but then you do basically singlehandedly carry your country to win the BJK cup, going 8-0 the whole tournament, so you manage to end 2023 on a high anyway. and so of course everyone just expects you to do the same thing in 2024, but you're playing great britain in the semifinals and maybe it'd be better if it was you vs raducanu finally, but instead you have to play in front of raducanu, who's just won her match easily, and you need to win your match for your country to have a chance of going through and you're not even in good form, and so she watches you lose in straight sets while she's cheering for your opponent.
