I'm so insane over Lord Raiden. NRS really said "Oh yeah, Earthrealm's protector is this handsome paternal man who loves humans so deeply that his desire to protect them often corrupts him... also he is an older brother and loves his baby brother!" AND I'M SUPPOSED TO BE NORMAL ABOUT HIM????
you have to be careful reading too many things that are good/smart/well-written bc then you encounter something that isnt and you get confused like ? why didnt they just make this good ? were they stupid
The choice to canonize Bi-Han explicitly as a villain by erasing the "Quan Chi disguised himself as Bi-Han to kill Hanzo's family" storyline is a fun one. We already knew he was a villain in the first movie, but when Quan Chi was announced to appear in MK2 I was certain they'd try to implement that storyline somehow, so I was happy when they didn't! It's another welcome change to the MK story that opens the door for so many new possibilities!
I keep turning over Kitana's MK2026 story in my head and it honestly satisfies every issue I had with the way she has been handled in the mainline games. I've always despised the fact that Shao Kahn is typically defeated by an Earthrealmer rather than an Edenian - logistically, it makes sense, seeing as he's their biggest threat. But thematically and emotionally, I felt it didn't work.
Mk2026 really looked at her story and said, "Actually. No. The one who should defeat this colonizer is the people and person he has already brutalized" and I LOVE IT! Watching Kitana choose to represent Earthrealm, to the cheers and applause of her people, as she disgraces Outworld and its emperor was SO SATISFYING! She represented the best of her character - selfless, determined, regal, deadly - in this installation that finally allowed her to be the one to defeat the greatest evil in the realms. SUCH a good choice!
One of the notorious facts about MK as a story and franchise is that changing even one small detail about it automatically changes the rest of the story. Roster swaps, settings, time, and even small character decisions all change the outcome of the rest of the story so no one adaption of any game, film, or interpretation is ever one hundred percent the same. Which I LOVE!
I desperately need them to continue the MK movies. I'm obsessed with seeing where they take it from here! The changes to the roster and the fact that Earthrealm actually WON the tournament and defeated Shao Kahn opens up the rest of following films to so many possibilities! I love it!
Since you asked. OMG MORTAL KOMBAT 2 was SO SO good. I had the release date literally marked on my calendar even though I was so disappointed by the first one, so I went in with low expectations but OH MY was I surprised. I was so glad to see the ACTUAL MK characters highlighted and the fact that we got to see Johnny AND Kitana's stories because they were so wholesome to watch. That Kung Lao and Liu Kang fight is probably one of the best I've seen in a long time and just seeing the moves from the games, ones that you've played yourself in the games, come to life on the big screen muah *chef's kiss*. The costumes were much better fitting. As much as a didn't like Cole in the first movie, he fight with Shao was also so well done, thank you Lewis Tan for your service. Two things I wish that were maybe different in an audience for kombat rounds because I want to see everyone's reactions AND I hate the fact that they did my queen Sindel so dirty, like this is Queen Sindel who would've wiped the entirety of Earthrealm and didn't hesitate to teach her daughter a lesson in MK9, not to mention if they could've found a way t have the hair do it's thing that would've made watching the fight more fun. Overall though, I really liked the movie and I'm so glad they added more comedy, Kano and Johnny were so much more refreshing to see in-between the real threat of Outworld winner and the jokes felt funnier. also 10/10 with Noob and Scorpion if only we could've seen them a little bit more. I've had the release date marked on my calendar for YEARS! And I updated it constantly before and after the strikes just so I'd know when it came out!!! It's been killing me to get to it so late when I originally planned on watching it the day it was out! But, I have to say, the wait was SO WORTH IT! WE ARE SO BACK, BABY!!
This movie genuinely surprised me with how much it improves on the first one - and I think the first one is already such a good movie! I'm really happy with having Johnny and Kitana as the main characters of their respective realm's side of the movie! And I know for a fact that the filmmakers knew what gold they had making the Liu/Lao fight and the Noob/Scorpion fight! Absolute perfection! I agree with you so hard!
I also wish that the fights had live crowds/audiences to witness the battles! It would've matched the way a lot of MK stages have NPCs watching and reacting to the battles! Having live reactions would've made each battle a lot heftier! It really bothered me how empty a lot of the fights were, particularly Kitana v Johnny.
I'm also upset at the way they handled Sindel. I hate that she had as little screentime as she did, AND that her battle with Sonya was as short as it was. It was still very technically impressive and I enjoyed seeing her powers, but Sindel having so little impact felt massively disrespectful.
I largely agree with what you've said! I largely have my qualms with the way Johnny was written and portrayed, but honestly? That's my biggest issue with the movie. I only have tiny nitpicks with it (the battles having no crowds, Edenia feeling largely empty, Lord Raiden feeling a lil too silly) but otherwise I adored the film! Everyone who worked on it did such a spectacular job and it shows! I LOVED IT!!
I need to get serious about video editing. I want to make AMVs of the movie.
