“ and he’s rather well trained, he knows … many tricks. ” a sharp whistle blew past his lips and a firm command escaped him. “ helion, logi. ”

he couldn’t really hide back his grin when a large waft of fire burst from his hell hound as he yipped.

“Ah!” The fire consumed their pant leg -- Italian and once very beautiful -- and they leaped from their seat. Flames reflected in their eyes as they watched with rage, awe, and desire.

Caught between stealing the beast and wringing its neck. Imagining its fire bubbling their skin until it choked.

Patting the flames out, shin scalding, Genie chuckled morbidly. “Wonderful! Tell me, friend...”

“Where did you find a monster like that?”

His heart nearly dropped when the man literally dropped to a full squat with his son in hand. But then look! Even if Calum felt like he was having a heart attack, Erza began to calm down. He tried not to feel jealous of the fact the young man could so easily put his son to sleep, when he, the child’s father, had to take hours on end.

But then Calum took one look at the young man’s face and he blinked. The man- why was he crying? Why was he looking like he was about to cry? Calum couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. In the face of the crying, Calum’s envy seemed trivial. Gently taking his sleeping son back, Calum used one of his hands to wipe the metaphorical tears at the corner of the man’s eyes.

“Is everything okay?” Calum whispered, rocking his son.

He gladly passed the baby to its father, arms weak. Once the child started to soothe, Bishop barely finished his movements before returning him. What were the chances of this stranger’s kid being the only other creature to be calmed by Bishop’s vehement exercise?

“I’m fine,” Bishop covered his mouth with the back of his hand. After a rough inhale and memories of his baby sister wasting away, he amended to: “No. Never mind.”

Staring at the pair before him, Bishop couldn’t help his dying need to hug that tiny baby so close he’d forget sadness ever existed. It was a feeling only people who had loved a child could feel.

“Sorry. ‘Bout earlier,” he mumbled behind his hand and turned away to leave him.

“…A labour?” The curiously ominous doctor had paused to catch the inquiry just as he would be making his way to board the ship, a single bag in tow. “Ah, are you a deckhand?” As only a passenger, Kankuro could only guess at the appearance of the ships established crew. But he wouldn’t wait for an answer - already he had outstretched the single luggage on his person. “Very good ~ I’ll take you up on that offer.”

“The others are just there.” With a small nod of his head, he’d motion towards two more, larger cases, matching the very one within his grasp. “Unless…you are unwell?” The strangers’ winching hadn’t gone unnoticed. Kankuro would make for a fairly poor doctor had it slip past.

“No!” He couldn’t afford to let this potential employer think he was unfit to work. Swallowing his panic, ignoring the aching pain in his head, and pretending to be a deckhand, he tried again: “No, I’m fine.”

Bishop took the first luggage from the stranger and wondered how best to carry the other two. He settled on two in one long hand and one in the other and hoped there was nothing fragile inside.

“So, uh, where...?” he began, and then stuttered to a stop. He had meant to ask where to carry the cases, but realized just in time the question would give away his lie. Bishop hoped the stranger would assume he was asking about his ultimate destination and ignore his avoidance.

A gust of wind messed his hair and pressed again against his wound. Flinch.

The number on the inside of his wrist became smaller and smaller every second, counting down to the moment he set eyes on his “predestined soulmate”, if such a thing could be real. Bishop sighed and lowered his arm. Turning back time would be awesome right now.

Not that he didn’t want love. He just wondered... was there even such a thing as a “perfect match” for someone whose personality had changed so completely after an accident? And wouldn’t he just be a burden, as he was now? Questions he’d asked too often to count.

How many times had he nearly carved it out?

The timer was probably under a minute now. Was he imagining the tingle in his wrist? Bishop’s leg shook. Sitting on a park bench in the middle of the night, no one else in sight, he was determined to not show up. To let his countdown hit zero without a soulmate.

But he hadn’t anticipated that the enormous private school in front of him functioned at night, too. That students would be wandering the campus close to midnight. The warning bell for class startled him... and then spurred him into action.

He grabbed his backpack from the bench and threw it over his shoulder, running. No way was he going to be soul mates with a teacher at some weird night school. No way was he going to have a soul mate at all. He couldn’t be--

Passing the ornate school gate, Bishop turned his head without reason. He caught eyes with a young student. His timer jingled.

She was... too good for him.

He continued running, heartbroken.

Genie tingled, imagining themself kicking the beast.

Genie’s no good for Lin. They’d want to pick him apart like a vulture, and if Lin didn’t go down easy they’d ruin themself doing it. (Might be interesting :p).

I think Mono would just accentuate all of Lin’s “negative” traits. Mono isn’t someone who feels he has time to slow down. It would either turn out harmoniously -- where Mono can embrace rest and Lin would be pushed out of his negative traits and become a little more like each other -- or terribly, where Mono has no patience or respect for Lin and stresses Lin out with his chaos.

Now Bishop would have to really get to know Lin and learn about his talents before Bishop could probably have a crush on him, but Bishop’s quick to fall if somebody is kind to him. Lin also isn’t usually Bishop’s type physically, but he could learn to love it after working through his insecurities.

Bishop would be more inclined to think of Lin as a friend until Lin does extra nice things for him, accidentally or not.

Karma. He was terrible at remembering names. He’d have to try extra hard to remember this one.

And then jealousy swelled in his chest and he processed everything else she said. “What other people?” Bishop held their elbows.

The inseparable feelings of fear and anger pulled at his brain stem, but he was dreary enough to still be in control over his faulty brain. He gripped the bed sheets and wondered why she gave him a bed.

Hadn’t he already done something stupid? What was ‘stupid’ in her books? Bishop didn’t want to push his luck.

After holding his breath a while he sighed. He wanted to ask what he could do to repay her the night’s stay, or why she bothered to help him out. She had to know she was doing him a huge favour. And, hell, why was she even out there to begin with if it wasn’t to attack him? He couldn’t remember anything she’d said.

He asked instead, “What do you want?”
