holland is an idiot, everyone’s told him so. you called him stupid, holly called him stupid, healy called him stupid, hell even the birds outside look at him like he’s stupid. because he is— he a complete fucking idiot and ruined the only good thing he had going for himself. see holland had this “friend” he made working some case; you don’t know much about him, except that holland always comes home black out drunk after a night out with him. you and healy don’t care much for his enabling behavior towards hollands worst habit. you knew he was trouble and didn’t like it.
you know holland is drunk when he calls to inform you that he’s gonna have a guys night. it was the weekend before his birthday, you know this friend is up to no good but you also know that holland’s gonna do what he wants regardless. so you sigh and tell him to have a good night and to call tomorrow morning.
it’s nearly one in the morning before you try to settle down to sleep. being hollands neighbor, you watched more and more people pull up to the house— noise from inside, and outside, getting loud enough for you to hear. you try to stay calm, but deep down you are seething. your boyfriend is having a fucking birthday party, right across the street from you, and you’re not invited. you can’t bring yourself to lay in bed, for some reason it makes you more aware of his absence and the shenanigans going on across the street. instead you lay on the couch, by 2am, most of the noise has died down as the guests have made their way inside or further into his back yard.
you’re dozing off to a rerun of ‘i love lucy’ when a gentle, but hurried knock wakes you. you rub your eyes and stand, the knocking becoming more frantic until you swing the door open. you’re caught off guard at holly, who stands in her pjs on your front porch, eyes red with tears. she looks pissed, tired and cold, and you know it’s from her dad. you sigh and step aside to let her in and she stomps in, it almost reminds you of her father.
“god i can’t stand him! he’s so stupid, he has to ruin any good thing that ever happens.” holly paces back in forth in your living room, arms hugging her sides. after closing and locking the door, you step closer, still giving her plenty of space, but just enough to let her know you’re listening. “he doesn’t even care! about you, me, any-“
“okay, lets take a deep breath here,” you interject when her voice cracks, a hand coming to her shoulder. “why don’t you start from the beginning.”
she tells you about holland’s friend, how they got drunk and he decided it would be a good idea to throw a birthday party. you sit down and give her space to pace around and rant, “and not only is it annoying enough that they’re fucking drunk and obnoxious, but then i come out of my room, and there’s fucking whores walking around the living room like it’s their house!”
your eyes are wide and your jaw is on the floor, “what?”
surely holland wouldn’t cheat, he wouldn’t invite a bunch of strippers to his house when his girlfriend lives across the street. at least you thought he wouldn’t.
but holly nods her head, “yeah, i know. i just crawled out of my window and came here. i can’t believe him! men are such pigs!” you can’t believe it, but at the same time curse yourself for being so stupid for keeping him around. aside from cheating, holland had given you a million reasons to leave in the past, you were just too blinded by love. you felt sick.
holly can feel the air shift from intense to a deep sadness, and her tone drops when she speaks again, “i’m sorry…” she huffs as she sits next to you, “he’s such a piece of shit.” the air is tense and a bit awkward as you try not to cry. this poor girl deals with enough emotional baggage from adults, she doesn’t need yours. “does this mean you aren’t coming around anymore?”
you bring your head to look at her, eyebrows raised in surprise. you see the tears in her eyes and your heart breaks even more, you pull her into a hug, “i’m not sure about your dad and i right now, but no matter what you’re always welcome here.” you pat her hair, tearing up with her as the reality of what happened hits you harder, “i’m always right across the street, i’ll even let you have a key.” holly nods and sniffles against your chest, pulling back to look at you. you both laugh at yourselves as you wipe away your tears.
holly settles into your guest bed, and you stay for a bit, getting caught up in whatever drama she has on the tv. but not even 20 minutes in, the kid is asleep and you’re trudging back to your bed. the window to your bedroom faces the street and it feels ironic as you fall asleep to the sound of car doors opening and closing, pulling away from holland’s house.
—
the next day, holland finally wakes up around noon. it’s a sunday and the house is trashed. he doesn’t remember too much from last night, calling you, inviting over a couple friends and then…. his mind goes blank.
it’s a little after 12:30pm when holland makes his way to your house. he tries his key but for some reason it doesn’t fit. he’s sure it’s this one, but tries the others to be safe. none of them work. unbeknownst to him, you and holly had woken up much earlier. with clearer heads, you both decided to change the locks. holland, still oblivious to the change, thinks he must’ve dropped his key at home or something.
holland knocks on the door, bouncing on his heels as he waits impatiently. a few seconds pass before he reaches up to knock again. this is odd, you are always quick to answer the door, or he can hear you stumble around as you rush to answer it. the silence this time is deafening, almost mocking. he raises his fist to knock more impatiently this time, the taps continuing until the door swings open unexpectedly.
he’s more surprised as he looks down to see his daughter in the frame. he straightens up and in an attempt to play off the shock says, “so what? your key works but not mine?”
holly rolls her eyes, “she changed the locks, dumbass.”
her tone is blunt and it take holland back by surprise, his eyebrows raise and he scoffs, “first of all, you need to watch your language young lady, second, move, let me in. why would she change the locks?” he makes a motion with his hands for her to scoot back as he tries to squeeze in, but her hands slams against the frame to stop him.
“nuh uh, go back home to your whores.” she spits at him. oh god holland what did you do? he knows he’s in deep shit if holly is this mad, but the memories of the night before are patchy and unreliable at best. he knows he’s would never cheat on you, but he can’t help but think of the worst.
best case scenario, someone invited over strippers, worst, he cheated and holly caught him. holland looks like he saw a ghost when you walk up behind her, hair wet from the obvious shower. your heart sinks when you see him and you sigh as you approach. you reach over holly to fully open the door, “honey you should wait outside while your dad and i talk.”
she doesn’t know much of what happens once he’s inside but she does her best to listen. there’s shouting, yelling, the occasional thunk, mostly coming from you. she cant help but hope you’re in there beating the life out of him for being such a scum bag. holly is sat on the side of the porch when the front door flies open and holland stumbles out.
“wait! honey please-“ he’s banging on the door as soon as it slams, calling out for you desperately. it only opens one more time for you to throw a wad of his clothes at him. his hand reaches out for you but you pull away, “come on baby let me explain-“ the door slams again and clicks with a lock.
hollands forehead rests against the door, sulking in his own agony, ignoring the child next to him. holly scoffs and rolls her eyes, “way to go, dad.” he can basically hear her eyes rolls as she walks off and once again holland is left alone in a mocking silence.
—
holland gives you approximately 4 days before he is back at it. he knows you need time, but holly has spent the last 4 days at your house in protest and he just misses his girls. his heart aches every time he returns to an empty house and he can’t take it for much longer. healy ended up telling you both that holland never actually cheated, but did let someone invite strippers to his party— albeit drunk as shit, but none the less. you were still hurt, about the strippers yes, but also that you weren’t even invited. maybe it’s childish but you felt left out and it hurts that he would let some guy convince him that it wasn’t a good idea to bring you.
it’s also healy who pulls holland up by his stupid suspenders and tells him quit being a pussy and to take his woman back! he’s not nice about it, not nice about anything with holland, in fact he kinda gets cussed out in the middle and he’s not sure who’s more mad at this point. regardless, he needs to hear it.
unfortunately for you, holland being holland, is full of grand gestures. it’s about 9pm when he stands outside your house, boombox in hand as music blares from the speakers.
“spending all my nights, and money going out on the town
doing anything just to get you off of my mind
but when the morning comes, i’m right back where i started again
and tryin’ to forget you is such a waste of time…”
you’re in the bathroom getting ready for bed when you hear the tune. it’s not super loud from the back of the house, but with the window cracked open, you can hear it. you can also hear as a familiar voice sings along:
“baby come back! any kind of fool could see,
there was something, in everything about you,”
you scoff at the ridiculousness of it. there’s no way holland march is standing outside your house, singing to you to get you to talk to him. you pull the bathroom door open and walk through your house as he continues,
“baby come back! you can blame it all on me,
i was wrong! and i just can’t live without you-“
the door flies open and you stand with your arms crossed, fighting the urge to laugh at him. he stood, speaker in one hand and the most outlandish bouquet of flowers you’ve ever seen in the other. you cut him off by yelling out to ask what the hell is he doing? the act takes you by surprise and your harsh gaze falters when you meet his eyes. you want to reach out to him, but you hold back, waiting for him to speak.
holland turns the volume down and sets it on the steps before looking back at you, “i’m sorry,” he’s breathless, “god i’m so sorry baby, i’m so fucking stupid. please, i would never cheat on you, you’re the light of my life.”
he takes a few steps closer and reaches out to you but you don’t return the affection, just cross your arms at him. “yeah but you’d rather have over some strippers for your birthday than your own girlfriend.”
“no, no, sweetheart, i was drunk, i don’t know who did that, i would never—“
“but you never stopped them! never told them to leave. you let your friends convince you not to invite me because they wanted to do this for themselves! and you just let them.” holland’s head falls in shame, he sniffles as he holds back tears, he has always been sensitive.
unexpectedly, holland drops to his knees. he moves the flowers to the ground next to him so he can reach up for you with both hands. they grab desperately at your own, his much larger hands wrapping around yours and he drops his forehead to rest against them. “i know, baby, fuck, i messed up so bad and i’m so sorry. i’ll never let it happen again.” you facade finally falls as he does, “please just come home, i miss you, and holly, miss you both so much.” holland kisses the back of your hands.
there’s not much holland is good at, fortunately, or unfortunately, apologies are one of them. your eyes fills with tears as you think back on the past few days, how badly you missed him. it was stupid, yes hurtful, but a stupid decision and here he is begging you to believe that he’ll never make that mistake again. lucky for him that he sounds believable enough for you to pull him up to his feet so you can throw your arms around his shoulders. he hugs you back with one hand wrapped around your waist, the other cradling the back of your head as you bury your face into his shoulder.
he shushes you as you cry, finally letting out your words between muffled sobs. you cry about hurt you feel, how you felt left out, like he didn’t want you anymore. but you also cried about how much you missed him while you two were apart and how it was the loneliest you had ever felt in your life. holland’s heart breaks with you as he listens. he occasionally interjects to reassure you or apologize when breaks allow, but for the most part he lets you speak. when you’re done, he holds you in silence until you pull away.
“do you wanna come in?” you ask when holland reaches up to wipe your tears.
he nods without a moment of hesitation, “is holly here?” he asks, hand coming to your forehead to gently push your hair back and out of your face. when you shake your head ‘no’ his hand drops back to cup your cheek and leans forward to kiss you. it’s sweet, gentle and full of unspoken words. holland pulls away just enough to reach down and literally sweep you off your feet. you gasp in surprise but laugh as holland carries you in, really trying his hardest to not hit your head on anything.
you’re laughing at his ridiculousness, making jokes about him dropping you every time he fumbles. he would never actually drop you though; as clumsy as holland is, he’s learning to be more careful with you. but the sound of your laughter after not seeing you for days makes the muscles in his chest ache as the gangly fingers of his heart reach to intertwine with yours. yes— holland is an idiot— but he’d be damned if he messed this one up.
