re: 1x10
a black girl’s sexuality means something. black girls are not unfeeling jezebels who can have a tape of a private moment between them & their partner passed around without them giving it a second thought. lacey, the same girl who in just the last episode insisted on keeping their relationship a secret, now doesn’t care about people seeing her (potential) sex tape?
why is this show so afraid to allow lacey to care? i am sick and tired of seeing these huge, life-changing, emotionally-devastating events inflicted on black women, without really giving them a chance to hurt. to see shows refuse to acknowledge a black girl’s pain, or even better, make it feel like their pain is justified. lacey is sixteen. she is a child.
and for a child to have their privacy invaded like that, to lose her friends and social standing, why isn’t she the one skipping school to stay locked up in her room? why wasn't she the one to close the last episode with a devastated look on her face? why isn’t jo the one forced to look outside her own feelings and go comfort lacey?
this show’s insistence that lacey needs to be punished or “redeemed” is so fucking bizarre to me. what has she done other than make friends with other people, develop a social life, and catch feelings for a boy her entire town hates? i’m troubled by the message that a black girl valuing her own self-preservation and making her own, independent choices is selfish.
i mean, why would you expect me to enjoy watching a 16 year old girl beg others’ forgiveness for having her intimate moment exposed, without her consent?? am i supposed to feel good about seeing her place the feelings of someone who only very recently came into her life over her own? is that somehow supposed to make me think (as if i didn’t before) that lacey is a good person?
why is putting Jo’s feeling’s first the standard of goodness? why can the black female character only achieve redemption by placing the feelings of the white ingenue before her own? i want to act like i don’t get it, but i do.
lacey deserves better, and so do we. seriously.
Oh, Avan…
Avan Jogia gets together with his Tut sister, Kylie Bunbury! Via his Instagram story, 1.23.18.
Life in these United States, bitch.
If Janny did happen- I don’t think it will, but if it did- I probably wouldn’t ship Dacey anymore. Not the new version of it anyway. Because that would mean Lacey risked her other friendships, her reputation in school, and her relationship with her mom (probably) all for a guy who really didn’t want to be with her. And that wouldn’t be fair. If Dacey have to see other people, then I’d rather it be on their own terms. Not because one half of the ship realized they had feelings for someone else, all the while claiming they wanted to be with the other. So I think that in order for Janny to happen, they would have to severely fuck up Danny’s characterization. Like SUPER severe.
Even though this post is from years ago I only recently watched this show and this is one of the many things that really bugs me about it. Even though Lacey makes it clear she doesn't really trust Danny due to the whole he murdered his aunt bit even though the show keeps suggesting that's somehow unreasonable and unfair (in her case it's consistently translated into she only cares about being popular and is a mean girl who isn't being fair to Danny), is worried about losing her friends (again not unreasonable considering they believe he may have also murdered their best friend), and yes, may even be worried about the impact on her status at school, Danny literally stalks her (see episode 7), ingratiates himself into aspects of not only her life but, weirdly, her boyfriend's life too until he breaks her down all to get her to trust him and to get at her. And then a few episodes after he and gets his way and she risks it all, her friends, her reputation for him, even her dignity and personhood thanks to that disgusting sex tape episode (don't even get me started on that mess) he basically tells the world he was never really into her and only did all this because he was into someone else and we're not supposed to think he's the slimiest douche on the planet and hate the show for consistently framing her as mean or unfair or shallow in her interactions with him in the eyes of the audience when she was right not to trust him all along.
Things that caught my attention from the script: 1. Lacey referring to Jo as a puppy dog, and Danny thinking it’s harsh. We find out later on in the season that he described Jo as a “shy puppy dog” in his journal while in Juvie. 2. We finally found out what Danny whispered to Scott at the party. So Scott wasn’t lying, technically. Knowing this, it kinda changes the way the rest of the show in 1A was in regards to the Archie/Scott/Danny dynamic. Maybe Danny really wasn’t a victim, maybe he was really as manipulative as it seemed but Scott and Archie just weren’t able to prove it. 3. Danny and Lacey were originally supposed to be lying on the floor together after their talk. I wonder why they changed it. I mean, we were all talking about how rude Danny was for taking the bed and making her sleep on the floor. Him sleeping on the floor too would’ve been less rude (and pretty adorable).
avoon-killer-jogular Is this what you were talking about? -_-
Yup that’s it.
But I think we all knew he’d pull the “Dacey was endgame” or “I would have written more for Lacey” card from his ass in an attempt to guilt people.
If they really wanted to write more for Lacey they would’ve done it in the first season. They just chose not to. And they kept saying they would because they knew people would stop watching if the show continued to be about Jo and her feelings.
Why did it need to be a “long game plan”? They had a pairing that worked and that the majority of viewers wanted to see (Dacey), and then they switched everything up. Why doesn’t he just accept that they chose unwisely and now are out of a job because of that?
Here’s what I think: they pulled the okie-doke. They realized that having POC in the show would garner more viewers (Scandal affect), so they decided to play that up by casting two of the main three as POC. That’s what got the show on air. Once they got the green light for all of their episodes, then they started telling the story they intended from the beginning: Jo and her feelingd, which backfired.
Nah….
That whole ‘Dacey was endgame’ bullshit was ruined the second the started flashing hashtags that said #Joistheone. Hindsight is 20/20 so I’m sure now they know they fucked up but I’m not buying that they planned on having Dacey endgame. Besides that it went way beyond just Dacey. When are they going to start apologizing for reducing Lacey until she was nothing more than a glorified extra? When are they going to start apologizing for making Jo and her silly problems the center of the universe? I still want somebody to explain to me why we had to watch Jo whine and cry over a boy she CHOSE to sleep with but we got nothing for Lacey and Danny when their privacy was violated and a tape of them was spread out all over the school? The lack of Dacey was a problem but it was just the tip of the iceberg. They decided that focusing on Jo was the way to go and it turned around and bit them in the ass, so too damn bad for them.
Excuse me but…STFU Andy. Long game plan my ass. What these jokers refuse to face is that the Lacy/Dacey and even a lot of Danny fans tuned out not because we didn’t “get Dacey” but rather it was in the way they chose to undermine that pairing and the female half of it in order to push unwarranted support for a character they chose to write as entitled and insufferable. People want to act like Lacey/Dacey fans were set from jump to dislike the character of Jo Masterson which is simply not the case. That side-eye goes to the other side of the spectrum who not only spit vile at Lacey/Dacey on their Facebook page 24/7 but especially at Kylie Bunbury. Sure some Dacey fans were over the top in their opinions but you show me where that part of the fandom went all out personally insulting Maddie Hasson on the regular? Don’t worry…I’ll wait. Bottom line is that all the backpedaling in the world isn’t going to fix what never should have been broken in the first place. If Andy, Adam and the rest were soooo invested in Lacey and Kylie as an equal with the other two characters/actors they NEVER would have wrote that disgusting sex tape/slut shaming bullshit and they certainly would not have continued to allow that blatant bias from their PR department constantly pushing all things “Jo” later played up in the writing and direction of the script/show. If they had been smart Danny would not have become involved with either girl and the so-called “heart of the show” as fronted by Adam Milch revolving around the girls’ relationship would have been developed and invested in not suddenly everyone is kissing Jo’s ass by aplogizing for things that she wasn’t even involved in while they diminish and degrade Lacey mentally, emotionally and sexually before “playing” with her potential to be bi-sexual or gay. The entire handling of this show after episode 8 was appalling and insulting and I feel not one ounce of sympthy for any of those in charge who were responsible for making the decisions that we all saw would be Twisted’s downfall. I’m just happy that Avan, Kylie and Maddie have now moved on to other projects where their talent won’t be squandered and even more happy and excited that while we may have lost Dacey we got the attention and respect of our support for them noticed by others and they are picking up and running with what ABCF and their cast of clowns in charge didn’t have the courage to stand up for and behind beyond a bait and switch PR stunt. How’s that #PoorABCF hashtag working for ya now? LOL
I call bullshit, Andy. Not with those hashtags about Jo constantly on screen on top diminishing Lacey’s screentime and importance.
You tried, though.
Ugh, these two I swear 😆
