On June 13, 1994, 13-year-old NIcholas Barclay disappeared from a friendâs home in San Antonio, Texas. Known as a troublemaker at the center of family disputes that often ended in calls to the police, the Barclay family assumed that Nicholas had run away and would return home, but he never did.
Three years into his disappearance, the Barclays received a call from a shelter in Spain claiming that their son was living at a shelter following an escape from a child sex ring. Nicholasâs sister immediately flew to Spain and brought him home to Texas. Despite having dark hair, brown eyes, a significant French accent, and looking much older than sixteen, the Barclay family believed that their son was finally home. Nicholas claimed that his abductors had altered his hair and eye color, and he had picked up the accent on his own.Â
After a media frenzy, people grew suspicious that this man was not Nicholas Barclay. He refused to give fingerprints or participate in DNA tests to prove his identity, yet the Barclays defended their son. In 1998, the FBI received a court order to obtain the manâs fingerprints, revealing that the man was not Nicholas, but Frederic Pierre Bourdin, a 23-year-old French citizen with a history of similar crimes. Bourdin was taken into custody and eventually sentenced to six years in prison.Â
Authorities began investigating the Barclays for Nicholasâs disappearance after Bourdinâs sentencing and knowledge of familial violence and drug abuse surfaced. Some believe that the family was so quick to accept Frederic Bourdin as Nicholas because they had killed him and his âreturnâ would cover their tracks. Though claims have been made, nothing has been proven and Nicholasâs case is still unsolved.
(Side note: A documentary titled The Imposter profiles the case and features the story from Frederic Bourdinâs perspective. Itâs available online and Netflix.)

Allen Christopher Ivanov of Mukilteo, Washington was arrested after killing three teenagers at a party .  It is said that Ivanov had just had had a break up with one of the victims, Anna Bui.  Ivanov went and posted on Twitter shortly carrying out the shooting.  He seems to have hinted at his plans on Instagram as well.  Ivanov had posted a picture of his new assault rifle days prior with three bullets next to it.  He captioned it âYou canât run with me :(â Some sources say he purchased an assault rifle weeks before the murders, others say just a week prior. Sources are making it seem as if the shooting wasnât premeditated.  That after coming to a party where he saw his ex-girlfriend with another guy, Ivanov went to his car in a jealous rage and got his assault rifle.  Not knowing how to use it, he apparently read the manual before loading the magazine.  Itâs also being reported that Ivanov reached out to a friend in Kentucky days prior warning them there would be a mass shooting.  Investigators have seen these text messages. Ivanov claimed that he crept around the side of the house to hide and was seen by one of the male victims.  The man allegedly said ânoâ over and over.  Ivanov did not spare him. He then went into the house and shot his ex-girlfriend Anna Bui twice.  He then shot another male.  Going onto the balcony of the master bedroom, he shot at two more males.  He sped away from the scene of the crime and was arrested about 100 miles away after being stopped for speeding. The three murdered were identified as Anna Bui, Jordan Ebner, and Jake Long.  All three victims were 19.  One more male was injured. Ivanov, a fluent Russian speaker, told investigators Anna Bui was the first girl he had ever kissed.  He worked at the Apple Store in the Genius Bar and graduated High School in 2015.  He is being held without bail awaiting trial.

Pictures from Another Time
âI will try to explain what I see in the pictures and what my friends have thought. I tried several times to show these photos to Native Americans, but they are afraid of them. This is because they agree, the photos are a ritual of cremation. The pictures were taken in my backyard in Placentia, Orange County, California September 1969. They were taken with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye 20, with b/w 620 film. The camera cost $10.00 in 1961, and I had to wind the film myself. There were 20 photos on the roll. 19 photos developed, number 20 was black on the negative.â -Rita
In 1997, Rita Swift found an old undeveloped roll of film with a note on it. The note read âtaken in our backyard Sep. 1969.â Rita took the roll to get developed and 19 of the 20 pictures developed successfully.Â
When going through the first few photos nothing was unusual. They were typical photos of her at 5 years old, her dog, cat, swing set, just a normal backyard, with great clarity!
Pictures 17-19 (ordered top to bottom in this post) took Rita by surprise. The last three pictures appeared to show what Rita claims to be a Native American ritual of cremation. She took the developed pictures to the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles where they suggested the Native Americans in these photographs, resemble the Chumash. They tribe dates back to the 1700s.
Rita believes these pictures were a portal to another time.Â

Vintage Surgical Tools
Amputation Knife (1700â˛s)- Doctors preferred the curved knife in order to cut through the patientâs skin and muscle before sawing through the bone
Cervical Dilator (1800â˛s)- The tool was most commonly used during labor to open a womanâs cervix, but often times caused the cervix to tear rather than dilate
Tonsil Guillotine (1860â˛s)- Each side of the tool was pressed against the patientâs tonsils and, much like the traditional guillotine, a blade was dropped to chop off the infected organs.Often times the procedure led to hemorrhaging and remains of the tonsils being left in the mouth.
Lithotome (1740â˛s-1830â˛s)- The shaft of the tool was inserted into a patientâs bladder and a hidden, spring-loaded blade would be released to remove stones.
Tobacco Smoke Enema (1750â˛s-1810)- The practice of blowing tobacco smoke into oneâs rectum was often used to resuscitate drowning victims under the belief that the smokeâs warmth would spark up respiratory function.
Ouroboros
Calories in, calories out.
I used the dremel saw I stole from work to cut off the first knuckle of my left pinky. The bosses had to know I took the thing but I doubt they even cared. Whatâs a $100 tool to a company thatâs worth millions? Besides, they were getting rid of me, and thatâs what their priority was. Maybe theyâll take it out of the last check they said theyâd mail.
Despite what I thought, it wasnât easy to pull the bone out of the finger chunk. So, I peeled off the nail and then cut the remainder of the piece open with the dremel and took the bone out the messy way. I didnât think much as I popped the fingertip in my mouth and chewed for what felt like an hour before the meat broke down enough for me to comfortably swallow. I tried to figure out how many calories were in the finger segment while also working to determine how my caloric needs have changed now that my body mass had decreased by that little bit. I donât know why I wasted so many years cutting when I couldâve done the smart thing by cutting off.

In Louisiana there is a small chapel called âSaint Rochâ where people leave their prosthetic limbs, glass eyes, leg braces and other items in tribute to the patron saint of Health. Those who recover from their ailments, or hope to do so, leave letters of thanks and offerings and have been doing so since the 1800âs. (pics: Slate)

The Hungarian Suicide Song is the popular nickname given to the song âGloomy Sunday,â written and composed by Reszo Seress and Laszlo Javor in the early 1930â˛s.Â
Urban legend or strange coincidence, the melancholy tune is said to have been linked to nearly nineteen suicides, including the death of a teenage girl who drowned herself while gripping the sheet music for âGloomy Sunday,â and an English woman who overdosed on medication while listening to the piece on repeat.Â
By the 1940â˛s the song had been banned on radio stations such as BBC for being âtoo upsettingâ for the public. In an ironic end, Reszo Seress took his own life in 1968 by strangling himself with a wire during a hospital stay.

Hello ! I just have to say that I really love your blog! Also, have you ever listened to a podcast called 'My Favorite Murder'? Its basically what it sounds like, two women talk to each other and the listener about different murder cases they've researched over the week. It's not very popular so I just wanted to let people know about it. :] thank you for reading !
Thank you! I havenât heard of that but Iâm going to take a look into it out of curiosity.
