The Nonsense Dark Knight Chase Scene. Jim Emerson spends 20 minutes breaking down the police chase scene from the Dark Knight and proves how it doesn't follow the basic laws of action cinematography. I never noticed a lot of these things when I first saw the film but I did always find the scene to be extremely hard to follow and comprehend.
James Hetfield Takes a Drive. While I admit their last few albums have been disappointing, Metallica's sound defined my childhood. Nice to see Hetfield here taking a long drive and explaining his own childhood.
Mos Def Battles Kanye West. Mos Def clearly has a better flow, but the way Kanye strings all those magazine titles together is genius.

Chad Harbach, from his contribution to "The Politics of Fear" article series in n+1. The article is a few years old now but I enjoyed it very much because it looks at the language used when politicians discuss global warming (for example, using "environmentalism" as a blanket term for a variety of complex issues). Most of what I read on the topic ignores the linguistics and rhetoric that form the parameters of this debate.
I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

Fool's Gold, "Street Clothes." Uplifting sounds from a band out of Los Angeles. Lots of interesting melodies that remind me of Talking Heads and Oingo Boingo. Vocals also remind me of Will Sheff from Okkervil River.

9/11 Commission Report
The Report says a "failure of imagination" is one of the reasons for 9/11. Mixing bureaucracy and imagination is an intriguing but confusing idea. I work for the government and see how bureaucracy can zap imagination and creativity. Directors and managers shun any discussion that does not help them finish their project but then scratch their head months or years later and wonder how they could have missed so many red flags.
One way to preserve imagination in a bureaucracy is if an entire department values and fosters open, critical discussions. Unfortunately, most of the public sector will only think about things that are right in front of them or that are clearly defined. Most public employees also have very little incentive to spend a majority of their day in deep thought about the larger, more complex issues that govern their work.
I used to buy into conspiracy theories and even entertained the thought of a masterminded 9/11 cover-up, but after a few years in the government's service, it's even easier for me to believe how a combination of incompetence and indifference led to something as tragic as the twin tower attacks.
