Mike thinks Will is Straight up until Will comes out to everyone. We know this bc… he’s jealous of the mystery girl Will likes. Remember?

“Will is painting a lot…Maybe it’s for a girl, I think there is someone he likes.” - El to Mike in her letter
“Uh what’s that?” - Mike to Will “um it’s noting. It’s just this painting I’ve been working on” - Will “Cool” - Mike
“Did you paint this?” - Mike *Smiling
“Yeah… I mean… El asked me to” - Will (Mike drops his smile at this)
Mike thought he was the one Will liked. That’s why he was excited when Will gave him the painting… Mike always wanted it to be him. Mike in the moments below are putting together he is the one Will likes and what this means for him bc this hard for Mike too. He’s coming to terms with what this means
Everything Mike thinks he knows about Will Comes crashing down on Mike when Will says this.
bc throughout this whole scene Mike is putting the pieces together. Slowly… but he is and We can see this—
Just look at his reactions here and then the subtext, the double meaning every time Will says something when the camera then focuses ONLY ON MIKE (it’s so obvious it hurts)
Mike is the only one in Focus here, this line is also for Mike. Also we know how Mike lies he moves his eyes away and puts his lips into a thin line. Watch this scene he does just that when Will says this ^ so he’s lying to himself basically, Mike is visibly scared in this scene.
here he glups BTW ^ Mike’s internalized homophobia makes him feel like he needs to distance himself from Will and that’s what we see in season 3 and 4 from Mike. Also Hoppers Speech to El and that was literally subtext For MIKE, literally talking about growing distance from you
Mike is scared, confused bc he’s thinking about the painting and he probably knows by now El had nothing to do with the painting. He’s always thought it was weird in season 4 with all the things going on inside his head bc nothing made any sense
Will’s coming out speech wasn’t just about him but for Mike and it was there for Byler to be placed in the final ep. It was there for Mike’s confession speech to Will for the last episode.
Know this: we already wrapped up Lumax, Jancy, and Steve and Dustin’s friendship all that’s really left is El, Kali, and whatever Hoppers got going on, they just want triple sewer slide atp. And then ofc BYLER BUT NOT EVEN BYLER SPECIFICALLY MIKE. He’s the heart.
It’s the way I never got doubt and everything just gave me Byler confidence I have no idea why everyone is freaking out. Mike is slow we know this. Why would they make Byler endgame in ep 7 or 6 for that matter. It’s their most special and significant ship ofc they are going to save it for the finale. It’s a plot twist. This is Mike’s turn to finally shine. I know it’s frustrating having it be the last thing but the way I look at it that means it’s the most beautiful and most important thing of all. This is so the GA will watch the last episode thinking no byler will happen and Will has moved on but if you’re smart and you pay attention to MIKE. You know..you know the truth. They did all of this work to put in hints, clues, subtext, the writing, the acting, the clothes, the set, the lighting, LITERALLY EVERYTHING TO MAKE THIS SHIP the most beautiful well thought out slow burn gay love story in the 80s plot twist ever.
PLS BYLERS STAND UP FOR GODS SAKE ITS NOT OVERc if you’re worried about some stupid article about the Duffers saying some crap, I thought we always new not to listen to anyone but the show it’s self. It’s obvious they’re doing this on purpose.
