Weâre really making a movie! And itâs getting long...Â
Last Saturday we joined Go! Push Pops & friends in a beach ritual day to celebrate the end of summer. Thanks to Tasha Petty for joining the film crew and to Elisa and Katie for inviting us to film! A Brooklyn summer isn't complete without a day at Fort Tilden :)
Katie and Elisa of Go! Push Pops taught us that itâs important to TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYONE, duh. So please enjoy these self-timer experiments, and bear with us as we learn how to pose in front of the camera.Â
In order from the top, we got Elyssa Jakim, Molly Burkett and Go! Push Pops themselves.Â

This is a small little prism sphere that bounced rainbow dots over one of our interview scenes. One of the most surprising and special things Iâve learned is that many of our subjects truly believe in fairies. Itâs a deep belief thatâs intentionally difficult to explain or prove through language, but these girls have convinced me that itâs true. Belief is a powerful magic.Â

Finding Sexual Healing With the Witches of the Temple of Venus
The Temple of Venus has been a huge inspiration for this project! Stay tuned for more, and until then, check out this reflection on a weird and special evening from Gabby Bess on Broadly.
A few video stills from the office of Bakara Wintner, a tarot reader, teacher and all-around inspiring young woman. Bakara gave us our first interview, and she shared so much! Thereâs no way you can listen to this girl talk and not deeply reflect about how you can find peace, joy and balance in your own life. Bakara offers individual & group readings and beautiful intention weavings on her site, so go check her out right now!Â

Production screenshots! I love this moment. So important to rest.Â
âHow we imagine the Moon, the author argues, is symbiotically linked with our representations of it; we only perceive the truly complete, whole Moon in the non-localized zone of our imaginations.â
- âYou Saw the Whole of the Moon: The Role of Imagination in the Perceptual Construction of the Moonâ, Leonardo Music Journal, June 2013, Vol. 46, No. 3, Pages 246-252
Just discovered this introductory quote to Gloria Steinemâs Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983)Â
I pulled the Ace of Wands this morning. Yesterday I spent the afternoon taking Molly Burkettâs Tarot 1 class at Maha Rose, and I walked out of there feeling like I finally had the foundation I needed to start building relationshiops to the 78 different images that make up the deck. Molly didnât give us definitions to memorize; instead she explained each suitâs meaning, the connotations of each number, the relationships across families, and how to mine the illustrations themselves for extra meanings.Â
The Tarot can be like a mirror. And todayâs mirror, the Ace of Wands, is making me feel awesome, confident and beautiful! The suit of wands is linked to the element of fire, meaning passion, life force, creativity and excitement. Aces are the concentrated energy of a suit. So the Ace of Wands is a big booster shot of energy to boldly go forward toward creativity and passion! Today Maia and I are filming the first interview for this story, and the message I read in this card is exactly what I needed to hear.Â
Blue Moon Energy Activation
We gathered in a circle in the Long Meadow. Planes flew overhead as the sun sank beneath the tree line. Families and friends clustered in pockets throughout the green, sounds of children playing and dogs barking mixed with Elisa and Katie's introduction to the evening. Newcomers were welcomed with sage and cleansing water sprinkled from tree branches.
In the center of the circle was an altar; prayer candles, plant cards, small gardening tools and other objects arranged on top of a small blanket. Â It began with earthy yoga guided by Katie, while her Go! Push Pops partner Elisa moved through the circle with aromatherapy oils. I told her I was tired, and she pressed peppermint oil to the back of my neck, my ankles, the tip of my nose. My sense of smell was overwhelmed; I was floating in a cloud of peppermint. Katie closed with a rare meditation on the lotus, and we moved into a foraging walk led by Elisa, collecting leaves and roots from park plants to prepare a dinner.
By now it was completely dark. We were led through the woods to a dark clearing illuminated with flickering tea lights. Dinner was carefully prepared by candle and iPhone light, and salad and bread was served to all on plates of large leaves.
Then it was time to cast the circle. Moon Church regulars called the directions to carve the sacred space: North for earth, East for air, South for fire and West for water. Libby performed a poem by candlelight. Susannah guided rituals to invoke connections to ourselves, to each other, to Mother Earth and to the moon. Tambourines and other percussive instruments appeared, and by the beat of the collective rhythm one by one we moved in to the center of the circle in freeform expressive dance.Â
A group of many strangers opened themselves to move, to breathe, to feel, connected together, by the light of the fire and the moon.
A blue moon is a rare thing - where were you for the last one in 2012? Where will you  be for the next one in 2018?
