Hi! I'm Stag/Towhee/Matcha (or whatever else!) and I generally go by she/they. Welcome to my art side blog. I'm AKA @tar-and-feathered so I might interact with you from there because idk how sideblogs work

I submitted my jjba oc Muro to the Black character design polls before i had done enough research & studies for redesigning his hair to draw him so now I've drawn him in his new main hairstyle twice i thought i would share them here alongside some of my reasoning!

I picked twists as a protective style because he enjoys the weight and look of long hair as a way to be more androgynous as he's genderqueer [not that hair length should be gendered but I noticed longer twists tend to be worn more by Black women so he would be taking inspiration from the Black women in his communities hairstyles] and wants to protect his natural hair from an active life, especially as if his twists get damaged in a stand battle he would rather its mostly or all synthetic hair and he can redo the affected twists when he has time.

Jumbo twists specifically are because he doesn't have a lot of uninterrupted time while needing to maintain his image so as well as liking the chunky look, the larger size helps keep his retwisting sessions more like 2-4 hours than 10+ hours every four to five weeks [he likes to keep extra on top of growth showing as well as his very active life- stand battles again- causing them to unravel quicker so he redoes them in shorter intervals]

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.

Addendum to Hair pt 1!

I want to add something I missed in the hair lesson! As someone who's had many natural styles, I sort of assumed that people would naturally end up in the twist out space as they researched afros. That's on me, because the entire point of this blog is to direct you there! So I apologize!

Twist-Outs! (21 Twist Out styles)

This is an example from the AMAZING link above on how twist-outs generally work. Not only does the link include options, but it also includes videos! There are so many types of twist-outs your Black character can have, and they're not all that hard to do, either! Twist-outs are often where new naturals find themselves as they learn to take care of their hair, so if your Black character is younger, or learning how to work with their hair for the first time and want to style it... why not let them give twist-outs a try?
