I think the reason Oleksei has stuck with me for so long is that the scene where he appears in Dan’s dream and says those lines is just so devastating. I feel obligated to drag HarryBlank for this for the foreseeable future.

That single line hits harder than anything Wilford ever said. I initially thought Oleksei’s role in the 096 breach was meant to embody the Foundation’s cold brutality(like the trope of “Do I get killed just for saying the wrong thing?” )but his line “Then why am I dead?” is just a whole new level…the story keeps bringing him up casually, like when Dan gets interrogated by Chris says “I decided… Oleksei and I decided that…” It’s like he’s been haunted by this person the entire time yet no one else notices because Oleksei left almost no trace. The person who shared his guilt is long gone, yet Oleksei matters far more to Dan than he lets himself admit. (why does harry make this common trope of sacrificing people for the greater good so painfully tragic?)

I’m also really curious about how Oleksei’s role is explained in the baby test and bathysphere test, both seem like hosted by Dan. Does the incident 096-1-A file’s mention of “a bit…eager” refer to his behavior during the breach, or something else entirely? I’ve always wondered about their task division. Am I just supposed to do something more dangerous and go die if I’m not the main character?

Well, technically several. The long fic is nearing 10k words right now, and I have several smaller fics I’m working towards finishing sometime soon, as well as one shitpost fic that was supposed to be published on April Fools, before I started procrastinating it.

If anything does get finished, it’ll likely be posted on Ao3.
