[Guide] Questions to Ask a Company In An Interview

You’re in the middle of an interview and the conversation seems to be going well...until the interviewer hits you with that dreaded question: “Do you have any questions for me?”

Many of us have been in this position before.  Numerous times throughout my career, I’ve made the mistake of going into an interview without having prepared a good set of questions to handle the situation I described above.  I end up winging it which has a 50/50 shot of actually working.  Sometimes, I get lucky and can think of something quickly enough to keep the conversation flowing seemingly naturally (and I can breathe an internal sigh of relief) but many other times, it results in a horrible awkward silence, broken only by my “uhhh”s and “hmmm”s while I try to think of something, followed by the less than ideal, “Actually, I think you just about covered everything!”  Regardless of whether or not I have come off as unprepared to them, I feel super unprepared in that moment and it throws off my interviewing mojo.

So to prevent this, I’ve compiled a template consisting of a list of solid, general questions I personally have asked in interviews that seemed to have gone over pretty well.  I originally made this as a reference for myself but thought it might be useful to share it with all of you.  If you think of any of your own, or have suggestions for what has worked for you, let me know and I’ll append them to this post!

Questions to Ask a Company In An Interview

Company Goals/Vision

Where is the company trying to go?  What do you think is the company’s long term mission/vision?

Who is the company’s target market/audience/client?

Who are some of the company’s biggest clients?

Have you already released your product? (Is it live?)

How successful has your product been so far?

Who are some of your competitors?

Company Financials (Startup-oriented)

What is the funding process? (eg. How often does the company raise?  Which series?)

How does the company acquire funding?

Who are some of the company’s investors?

Is the company profitable?  (Does the company generate income?)

Company Demographics/Culture

How big is the company?  What is the current number of total employees?

How many people are on the engineering team?

How many women are on the engineering team?

If the percentage of women engineers is low, what are some of the ways the company is trying to increase that percentage?

How To Not Alienate Your Only Black Employee

Earlier this year, the topic of diversity recruitment sparked a lot of conversations at my company and, honestly, it had been starting to drive me a little crazy.

My coworkers' intentions were great — they had noticed and were able to acknowledge different aspects of our office’s environment that had fallen privy to tech community stereotypes: that the company had at least 15 women out of a total of 50-60 people and only 3 of them were employed as developers; that 3 female developers versus at least 30 male developers was not so great; and, oh yeah, that there was only 1 full-time black employee in the office (yours truly).  My coworkers could speak to this and remarked that they recognized their privilege in being able to walk into the office and feel like they were surrounded by people like them in many ways.  They noted that while that felt great, it was also representative of a huge problem.

As a black woman software engineer — and someone who devotes herself to finding ways for people of color to reclaim their position in the STEM space — these insights from my coworkers should have been, and were, music to my ears.  Hearing this level of self-awareness and being able to engage with them openly was incredible.  Where this interaction began to transition into not so great, however, was the moment I realized sharing my experience of being an “only” or “one of a few” in the tech world was not always being treated by some of the people around me as just that, an experience, but being misinterpreted as “expertise” in the realm of representing the collective experiences of the “onlies” in the tech world.  I was beginning to sense that I was no longer “Daphne, another engineer at our company” but, instead, I was sliding into the role of “Daphne, the voice of the underrepresented” (and that that slide had already started before I even knew I was on it.).  That’s when I knew there was a problem.

Talking about diversity at our companies is important and necessary if we want to properly address issues like those surrounding our hiring practices and our recruitment strategies, especially in spaces as white and male-dominated as tech.  However, I think what is often forgotten is that how we discuss diversity is actually more important than just simply discussing it.  It’s not enough to have an unstructured, unfocused dialogue on a topic that touches so many sensitive domains with people who are generally unequipped and uninformed on how to talk about it.  In fact, it’s dangerous.  It’s potentially asking a group of people to have an hour long meeting to unpack and deconstruct the social/political/economic constructs of race and gender (among other equally heavy constructs) together while also having each person acknowledge and hold their own personal and professional selves — as well as their own histories — accountable and hoping, by the end, action items are produced so everyone can move forward and happily return to their desks.  It’s unreasonable.  Our society does not prepare us at all to have those kinds of discussions, especially in the workplace.  How can we talk productively about diversity if we don’t know how?  What does “productively” even mean, realistically?  And, most importantly, how are we defining “diversity?”  That word gets thrown around more than “fraud” in an episode of Love and Hip Hop and everyone has a completely different idea of what it means based on their own context.  So if we’re going to talk about “diversity” for real, we need to clarify what each of us mean by it.  For some, it’s race.  For some, it’s gender.  For others, it’s physical/mental ability.  Others, it’s age, academic pedigree, nationality, religion…the list goes on.  And for many, “diversity” refers to a tight, intricately bound combination of several or all of those identities.  But we need to be explicit in our definitions before we start throwing big words like “diversity” around.

Now, once we’ve defined what diversity specifically means to each person involved in the discussion, this should NOT, under any means, be mistaken for that person becoming the unofficial ambassador for that particular community of people who may (or may not) share that experience.  Voicing what one has experienced in regards to their view of diversity does not mean it is her responsibility to (a) reach out to others she has identified as sharing that experience (everyone should have agency over their own identity) or (b) educate those who do not share her experience and serve as a representative and a teacher for those who have questions.  She also should not have to become a therapist in order to help those confronting their societal guilt deal with it and feel better about themselves.  Voicing an experience is just voicing an experience.  If someone else can relate, great.  If no one can relate, totally fine.  Either way, that experience’s validity remains exactly the same and is not affected by the presence or absence of a cosigner.  And when that experience is singular, that person is no more or no less an “expert” in it and should not be looked to in that way because it is a slippery slope to then extracting only their voice and pushing the rest of that person into the background — the same process of dehumanization that provided the foundation for racism in the first place.

So, in conclusion, here are some ways to prevent alienating and singling out a friend, coworker, etc. who expresses to you their experiences with being an “only” or “one of a few” —

(1) Do not go to them (afterwards or at all) to discuss your societal guilt relating to their experience.  It’s not fair to put that on them and while you may think you’re building a bond by being so ~open and honest and aware~ realize you are actually giving them more reason not to want to engage with you because of your demonstrated ability to make their experience all about you.

(2) Do not get on the defensive when your friend is sharing their experience, especially if it involves something they feel you did or said to them.  Put your ego away and admit to hurting them, even though it may not have been your intention, and stop trying to make the discussion about you and defending “the point” of your hurtful actions.

(3) If you think of something and want to ask this person for validation to ensure that your thought is not racist/sexist/homophobic/etc., then chances are it probably is racist/sexist/homophobic/etc.  Sorry to break it to you.  Probably best to keep it to yourself.  Or, better yet, read this and then continue to educate yourself.

(4) Do not ask them to be an ambassador.  If that person is not employed as a recruiter for your company, do not make it their responsibility to go out and find or reach out to “people like them.”  Let them do the job they were hired to do and refer who they see fit without the implied weight of their referral being about bringing in more “people like them.”

There you have it.  This definitely isn’t a complete list, but it’s certainly a start.  My hope is that if we can start framing our diversity discussions better and more clearly, we can ensure that everyone’s voice has equal weight in the conversation.

Young Professional BLERD Gives Back to STEM on Birthday

In honor of her 27th birthday, Ashley Nealy, “The I.T. Girl,” is establishing the Ashley R. Nealy STEM Fund at the A.T.O.M.S. Center at Kennesaw State University to advance the teaching of mathematics and science in Georgia’s K-12 schools. Ashley attended Kennesaw State University for both her undergraduate and master’s degrees and wanted to do something special for her birthday this year. She works as an IT Specialist for the federal government and also owns a creative solutions company, Mindly Maven, LLC which specializes in web design and graphic design.

“Females and minorities are severely underrepresented in the computing industry. This fund will help more teachers go into teaching these subjects to encourage more people from these groups to go into STEM careers. I was influenced by a high school teacher to go into the field and statistics show it’s vital to start early.”

Ashley’s birthday is also the start of Computer Science Education Week which runs from December 8 - 14, 2014 and is produced by Code.org. She will team up with State Representative-Elect Erica Thomas (District 39) to teach coding to over 60 students at South Cobb High School during Georgia Day of Code on December 10th which is part of an Hour of Code’s worldwide effort to reach 100 million students in one week.

“As I was looking through the list of schools, I was happy to see many from Cobb County, but I saw a lot of schools missing as well. I decided to target South Cobb High School since it has a high population of students who are economically disadvantaged and could benefit from learning how to code. I contacted Representative-Elect Erica Thomas about this and she was extremely excited to bring this opportunity to South Cobb.” The event will be named “South Cobb Codes” and Ashley hopes to extend the initiative past the day of code to expose as many students as possible to the world of computing.

Having more white women attendees at a conference this year than last is hardly diverse, and hardly a reason to celebrate diversity when Blacks and Latin@s still make up only 5% of people in tech.

Student 1: Do you think UCs will understand if I just say I want to be like Daphne in my personal statement? Student 2: Probably not. What does that mean to you anyway? Student 1: Like I don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but I do know I want to be a computer badass and go on vacation whenever I choose.

On August 28th, the “Black Life Matters Ride” an initiative of #BlackLivesMatter will bring Black folks from across the country into Ferguson, Missouri, as part of a national call to end state violence against Black people.  The “Black Life Matters Ride” is a call to action, a slogan under which Black people can unite to end state sanctioned violence both in Ferguson, but also across the United States of America. In addition, it aims to end the insidious and widespread assault on Black life that pervades every stage of law enforcement interactions; be it in custody or in our communities.  While Black people make up a mere 13% of the US population we make up more than a third of those killed in officer involved shootings across the country. We know that anti-black racism in the form of vigilante violence is most often informed by law enforcement violence. As a national call to action, the “Black Life Matters Ride” is unifying Black people under the following demands:

1. Justice for the family of Michael Brown and all other victims of law enforcement and vigilante violence. 

2. The development of a national policy specifically aimed at redressing the systemic pattern of anti-black law enforcement violence in the US. 

3. De-militarization of Law Enforcement - we are demanding that the federal government discontinue its supply of military weaponry and equipment to local law enforcement. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies across the country should liquidate their current military resources, immediately.

4. Release the names of all officers involved in murdering Black people both on patrol, but also inside custody from the last 5 years onward. 

5. Decrease law enforcement spending/budget by ½ by 2016, and invest that money into Black communities most devastated by poverty in order to create jobs, housing, and schools. 

-We will arrive in Ferguson on Saturday, August 30th, 2014, and we will leave on Monday, September 1st. While there we will fulfill the following agenda: •Thursday- Friday: Riders travel from destinations to Ferguson. NATIONAL WEEKEND of ACTION! • Saturday: Solidarity march and/or local community engagement efforts coordinated with local community members.  •: Sunday: Establish next steps and key action items in the #Blacklivesmatter movement. Three JKUAT female students Tuesday May 27, 2014 won the Safaricom Technovation Challenge, for developing a mosquito repellent application dubbed Quitmosquito. The Second year Computer Science majors comprising Pauline Mbabu, Caroline Kimathi and Nancy Adhiambo emerged top with their innovation that employs ultrasonic sound frequencies to cause stress to mosquitoes, hence keeping them at bay. The App also integrates a music player for entertainment and to minimize user irritation at low frequencies.

Rape and sexual violence is used as a weapon of war around the world. It destroys whole communities and ruins the lives of women and men, boys and girls.

Over the last 18 months the political will to tackle these terrible crimes and injustices has dramatically increased. But political condemnations rarely lead to action on the ground. Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, are hosting a Global Summit this June in London to bring together governments, civil society, media, military and judiciary to turn political will into practical action.

It will be the biggest meeting ever held of its kind.

In addition, the Dutch Embassy in London, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, MakeSense and Chayn will be combining forces to offer a #EndSVCHack hackathon for envisioning and designing technical solutions to combat sexual violence in conflict.

These technical solutions will focus on supporting the four aims of the summit, which are: 1. Reporting and Documenting Sexual Violence 2. Supporting Survivors 3. Promoting Gender Equality 4. Improving Collaboration between Organisations and Activists

Ideas will be crowdsourced beforehand and participants may choose from those submitted, or generate their own.

"Fake it until you become it" -- Amy Cuddy

I just watched this incredible Ted talk from social psychologist Amy Cuddy where she discusses using nonverbal communication (aka body language) as a way of influencing how you feel about yourself.  The most inspiring part of this talk for me starts at minute 16:02, where she tells the story of how she dealt with impostor syndrome and then was able to help a student overcome it as well.  I found it particularly inspiring because it reminded me of all of the points in my life and my career where I felt I didn't belong and was terrified of what would happen when those around me suddenly discovered that I was not "supposed" to be there.  And the reasons I thought of to rationalize this impostor syndrome ranged significantly but in the end, despite those reasons, I deserved to be where I was.  I know I'm not the only one who has dealt with this, especially as a software engineer --- I have had talks with so many people of various backgrounds who felt they weren't worthy of what they had achieved, despite all of the facts demonstrating the opposite.  I love Amy Cuddy's philosophy of utilizing nonverbal communication as a way to combat that mentality and change how we view and appreciate ourselves.

Emoji Diversity Update: Oju Africa Launches Black Emoticons - Atlanta Black Star

Oju Africa, a division of African mobile manufacturer Mi-Fone, has launched its own range of Black emojis: Oju translates as “faces” in Nigeria’s Yoruba language. They have been designed for Android, but will also be released on iOS. Creative director Eserick Fouché says:

“We follow global trends but we are differentiated by our authentic African voice. So as a brand we wanted to do something that only Africa could pull off, something that could become so iconic that it would have the world talking. I believe what we have created will ensure that every African on the planet won’t be able to help but love it!”

A Quick Word on 'The Stanley Parable'

I played 'The Stanley Parable' tonight and it was seriously as awesome as my coworkers hyped it up to be.  If you haven't heard of or yet played 'The Stanley Parable,' it's a PC game out on Steam that is about a man named Stanley--well, I can't tell you the rest or I would ruin the game for you.  It's a not a long game at all: the first time around took me just under 2 hours and the second time from start to finish took less than 5 minutes.  It is the kind of game that made me think, not just about the gameplay but also about my own life.  It's a game that reinforces the idea of agency (or questions it?) and I spent quite a bit of time afterwards reflecting on what 'agency' really means.

I think agency can mean something completely different to each individual and is highly dependent on context, circumstance and possibly even previous choices.  I still can't believe I switched up my whole life only just 8 months ago to move across the country to New York to pursue a program that seemed too good to be true and ended up being so good and completely true, only to then afterwards drive cross-country and land in the bay area.  I've been thinking about this quite a bit recently but, after playing this game, I realized it's not just the consequences of the choices I made that make me feel a sense of agency; it's the fact that I made these choices for myself.  It feels like a pretty powerful realization to have now that I've had it but it's also something that I think we all so easily lose sight of when life isn't going the way we want.  We tend to forget how much choice we really have.  We always have the choice to make our own choices, and each choice leads to another set of choices.  To bring it back to computer science terms, maybe life can be described as a decision tree where each node has an infinite number of branches from which we can choose to move to a next node to form our individual path.

I encourage you to play 'The Stanley Parable.'  You might play it and have a life epiphany like I did, or you might play it and think it's silly. Either way, the choice is always yours.

Why my first job was crucial (& what I got out of it for the next one)

Hey Coders!  I'm finally in the Bay area, after all of the adventure it took to get here, including a crazy fun cross-country road trip.  I have officially landed on one single spot on the U.S. map and I'm happy to start calling the Bay area home.

It's been nearly a month now since I started as an engineer at Apportable and it has already been a blast.  My brain feels like it's overflowing everyday with all of the new knowledge I've been acquiring.  Plus, I've gotten to help out with some really awesome projects so far, including working on the android version of this awesome game called OLO and representing our company's booth at the Game Developers Conference last week.

One of the aspects I have loved so far about starting at Apportable is how encouraged I was to just jump right in.  Though not required, they hope that new engineers can try to push code, regardless of how minor or major a change, on their first day.  Before my first day, I was feeling a bit intimidated only because it seemed like such a huge feat.  What if I didn't understand the system well enough?  What if I still didn't know what I was doing by the end of the day?  What if I wasn't as experienced an engineer as I thought I was?  (Oh, impostor syndrome...).

However, upon getting there, I realized that despite a number of differences from the atmosphere of my first job at Lexmark, there were also quite a few things that stayed the same or at the very least were familiar enough for me to pick up new things.  For instance, having gained a thorough understanding of Git from my previous job, I was able to jump right in and pull down the code I needed to start working immediately.  Having experience with build systems and Makefiles made it easier for me to understand how to build this platform I was working with for the first time by equating similar concepts that I had previously encountered.  And though the developer tools I now use at Apportable are not the same ones I used at Lexmark, having that prior workflow at Lexmark and knowing how I needed to set my workstation up to make myself the most productive I could be allowed me to set myself up in a matter of hours, rather than the number of days that it took the first time around.  By the end of my first day at Apportable, I pair programmed on a small project and was able to push some code changes and submit them to the rest of the engineering team for code review.

The idea that prior experience helps inform new experiences seems obvious to me now, but I was super unaware of this while at my first job.  Back then, I had just come out of college and had no experience with things like version control, various text editors (and the shortcuts to make them more convenient to use), build systems, working with a super huge codebase....basically many of the tools and experiences that make up the daily life of a Software Engineer.  All I knew then was that I was eager to code.  Now I know there's more to it than that: there exists a plethora of tools and resources that I can assemble to form a workflow that allows me to code more productively and efficiently (which is the reason I advocate computer science education programs incorporating classes on dev tools as part of their "software engineering" tracks, but I digress...).

Though I was less attuned to it then, I know now just how much my first job taught me and how invaluable that knowledge is.  And thankfully, the foundation provided to me by my first job has helped support the weight of the new knowledge I'm acquiring everyday at my new job.

Hey everyone!  I'm currently moving cross-country to start my new job with Apportable in March.  Woohoo!  This means, however, that I won't be as available as I would like to be during this time.  Boo.  Keep a look out for posts and awesomeness to start back up again in full swing in mid-March.  I'll have driven across the country, started my new job and my new life in the Bay Area by then so I'll have way more cool new posts and coding projects to talk about. :)
