The Dragons Dark and Deep
Chapter 25 teaser - 'Cause it's Strange Times, Dark Days
She bid her Unsullied commander to enter and he was in front of her a moment later, wariness bright in his dark eyes.
It pulled her to her feet, her heart quickening. βWhat is it?β
βThere is a woman outside the keep. She is begging an audience with you, my Queen. Only you.β
Most of her anxiety leaked away in a released breath. A visitor wasn't nearly the terrible news she feared. βWe both know that is not going to happen.β Jon would be terribly displeased if she took such a risk. Not to mention his still bruised trust. She would not batter it more than it already was. Sheβd promised him. Whoever this woman was she would meet the King, as well as the Queen.
βWhere is my husband?β she asked as she retrieved her gloves.
βHe is in the yard sparring, my Queen.β Grey Worm stepped into her space giving her no choice but to give him her full attention. βShe is a Red Priestess,β he said lowly.
That gave her pause, her nerves instantly back on alert. βA Red Priestess? In the North?β It made no sense.
He nodded. βShe says she has news and a gift.β
Unsettled, Dany slid on her gloves and then her coat before motioning for him to open the door. βWeβll fetch the King first, then meet with this priestess. Summon Ser Jorah as well. Have him escort her to the Hall.β
Grey Worm issued the orders to the other guard outside their quarters. The soldier went down the opposite hall to do her bidding as she followed Grey Worm to the yard. They found Jon sparring with Tormund. She settled in to enjoy watching him for a bit, she needed all the goodness she could find and he never disappointed her, and provided a lovely distraction. He was doing just that until she realized Tormund was swinging a real weapon at her husband again. At her sharp whistle the men stopped in stride and turned towards her, both straightening at the sight of her standing there with her arms folded over her chest and a not so pleased expression on her face.
As she approached, Jon ducked his head so her gaze settled on their Wildling friend. She cleared her throat. βTormund, weβve discussed this.β
βYouβre not to swing a real weapon at my husband.β
She caught sight of Jonβs smirk before turning to Tormund who was holding up his axe and looking affronted. βItβs dull, Dragon Queen. Iβd barely maim with this blade.β
Her husband chuckled but immediately went quiet at her glare. She turned her attention back to Tormund. βBe that as it may, do not do it again.β
He blew out a frustrated breath. βEver since you got married, youβre no fun anymore.β
βWhich one of us are you talkinβ to?β Jon asked.
βExactly,β Tormund muttered before he stormed away.
Jon was laughing softly when he turned to face her but adopted a look of total innocence, eyebrows raised and mouth slightly opened, contesting her dark frown. βIs the Dragon Queen cominβ for me again?β
βYou know better,β she answered, trying to maintain her angry facade and failing.
He smiled at her. The one only she ever saw. βAye. Iβm sorry. Forgive me?β
She rolled her eyes but smiled back anyway. βDonβt let it happen again.β
βI promise,β he murmured as he stepped closer and brushed a quick kiss to her temple. βYou feelinβ alright?β
βYes,β she easily dismissed, βbut we have an issue.β
His responding groan was felt to the depths of her soul. βWhatβs happened now?β
βWe have a visitor in the Hall.β
βAnother one? People are supposed to be headinβ South, not North,β he grumbled. βDo we know who it is this time?β
He stiffened at that, his expression growing grim just as she knew it would. βMelisandre?β
βIβm not certain. All I know is a Red Priestess asked for an audience with me, alone.β
βThat's not fuckinβ happeninβ,β he muttered as he sheathed his sword, quickly pulled his curls back from his face, and donned his new coat again, mantle and straps, as well.
Right before her eyes he transformed. From one man into another far fiercer. Fighting and laughing with Tormund he was simply a young man having a good time. Flirting with her, smiling bright as he had that morning, he was certainly a man in love. But now the King had slipped into place.
