I really don’t.,, understand why people hate Sprig? She’s a bit busy, yeah, and Buttermilk has been inactive in part because of that, but? Why do people hate her so much? It’s not a crime to be busy? Is there something else I’m missing? Because she seems like a pretty nice person from what I’ve seen?
.
Hey anon, long-time buttermilk community member here (since V1.) There have been repeat instances where Sprig singles out players they do not like and drives them off, including members of her own staff! During the last luau event, she bought one of the uber-special starfish cows... one that she had already seen the design of, despite the fact that she’d forbidden the artists from showing them to anyone. The cow she bought was one of hound’s designs. She opened the luau store and then posted a form to buy the cow about 10 seconds later. So.... sketchy as fuck, and abusing her position as owner to 1) see adopts beforehand and 2) be able to buy them before anyone else. If she wanted a custom there was not anyone stopping her. Instead she got one of the cows meant for community members.
Not sure if you’ve noticed that buttermilk staff keep leaving, but numerous artists don’t like her because she has arbitrary rules for her favorites and is rude to absolutely everyone else. It isn’t fun to work for or with someone like that.
As for vanilla bean being co-owner, not sure how to feel about that. I’ve never seen them stand up to Sprig before. Personally I think someone like parlayx or chromatic should have been chosen, but what do I know. If you want to know more about buttermilk discourse feel free to PM me.
hey real quick shoutout to my sisters who deal with misogyny every single day in thousands of ways, be they micro-aggressions or more... aggressive aggressions
that shit gets tiring i know
I’ve noticed a pattern between trans men and women when it comes to handling sex segregated spaces, especially those such as restrooms, saunas and bath houses, pools, locker rooms, etc. and I just wanna write this out while I’m high enough to do this so hop on this ride and buckle the fuck up.
So I’m passing pretty much 100% as a man at this point (been on hormones for almost 2 years + being out since a young teen), and yet there’s still that anxiety when using the restroom/locker room/sauna/whatever. I know I look like a man now and that i pass, people see me as one, etc., but I feel like since I’m still a female, I should continue using female spaces for my own safety. The dilemma is that any women in the place might, completely understandably, lose their shit if this passing trans dude just walks in and I’d have to try my best to explain that I’m a female as well and I’m just transgender and hope it doesn’t escalate past that, and it pretty much never does escalates after that. It’s an embarrassing thing to have happen sometimes, but it never escalates to anything past the misunderstanding and weird looks. Now on the other hand, since I’m 100% passing, I should maybe consider that it’s time to use the men’s spaces. I also know good god damn well how violent men are and if I were to use a sauna or locker room in a male space and out myself by having an exposed female body, there’s a 99.99999…∞% chance this just won’t end well. I could be sexually assaulted and beaten up, then have to deal with slurs and insults on top of that cake.
So because of male violence, trans men tend to advocate more for gender neutral spaces. Most trans men are more in favor of gender-neutral places because deep down, whether some trans men acknowledge it or not, we know that using male spaces won’t end well in the least bit if we’re outed because of male violence. I have yet to really see the majority of trans men demand that we be allowed into male spaces simply because we identify and pass as one. Using a female space as a trans guy mostly just causes confusion and inconvenience. By having gender neutral spaces (especially restrooms), we can just alleviate a good majority of these problems and fears when it comes to which restroom and other sex segregated areas we should use and what could happen to us if we use male spaces and get outed.
Now I’ve noticed a different trend with some trans women. Yes, most of them have that same fear we do when it comes to sex-segregated areas. If they use female spaces, they could be yelled at and have the same experience, and if they use the male spaces then, of course, that won’t end well either. However, they take a different approach to it. They just demand access to female spaces and that’s the end of the story. If women say, “no, we don’t think it’s fair that male-bodied people get access to our spaces because it’s for OUR safety. We understand you’re trans, but you don’t have the same sex as we do and due to the history of male violence we don’t want any in our spaces,” then they’re told to get over it and called a TERF or whatever. The majority of trans women advocate for gaining full access to female spaces instead of advocating for gender-neutral ones and take the oppression of females as a joke when they demand to be let into female spaces. They say that they want to be able to use female spaces and not gender neutral ones because, “it makes us feel more comfortable with our gender identity and we want to be able to use the same space as my gender identity.” Some of them don’t even try and pass well before they start demanding to use female spaces, and don’t get me started on that trans woman who used a women’s locker room and basically flashed those women in there because, “if cis women can be naked in here then I should be able to show my body too,” completely mindless and thought that shit was actually acceptable to do. Now I know people like that don’t represent all trans women, but they rarely ever think about our female oppression and how a male being in a female space and deciding that because they’re transgender that they’re entitled to just ignore how females feel, including trans-identified females, and how this can impact us.
This shit really needs to stop and we need to start calling for gender neutral spaces instead of trying to demand spaces where we just don’t belong. These places are sex segregated for a reason and no matter how we identify, we really need to stay in our lanes. Trans identified females fear for our lives and safety using male spaces and getting outed as a female, therefore we tend to stay in female spaces until more gender neutral ones are available because we know that other females are extremely less likely to physically harm and sexually assault us for being trans identified, even if we’re completely passing as a man and so long as we’re of the female sex. Trans identified males need to start realizing that women aren’t excluding them from female spaces because they just woke up and felt like hating trans people and men, it’s because of the oppression and violence that comes from males no matter how they identify and we need our own spaces.
gender neutral bathrooms are 100% the best solution for this problem, they say that using gender neutral bathrooms is “outing” themselves but there are SO MANY public spaces that have gender neutral bathrooms and NOT ONE report of trans people being targeted as a result of using them
in contrast, there have been several reports of females being targeted for harassment and assault as a direct consequence of self-identification but thats never a valid argument in their eyes because “no true trans”
We have ONE trans man at my work, and she specifically uses the women’s bathroom. Everyone at the office was a bit taken aback and expected the reverse since I think they’re used to all the trans bathroom discourse in the media lately. All those transwomen demanding to be let into the womens room. None of us women mind of course…. I’ve known her for years, she’s never sexually harassed any of the other women obviously. Interestingly, many men at the company were relieved she would not be using the mens room. I did overhear some conversations early on in her transition among male coworkers stating they’d feel uncomfortable having Sarah be in the men’s room while they were at the urinals. It’s interesting to me how respectful and logical many trans men seem to be about bathroom stuff. Not that I should be too shocked, women grow up realizing how unsafe it can be for us.
^ its truly fascinating how females of every gender identity can understand the important of sex-segregated spaces but males just dont get it
~almost like males dont experience sex-based oppression or something~
How long does the average digital piece take you? I struggle with giving up on my art too early.
When I first started drawing digitally, a lot of my pieces were pretty simplistic (portraits with plain backgrounds were the norm, though I also had a thing for lineart with basic coloring). Accordingly, they could be done in the span of 1-4 hours, meaning that I could upload one to this blog or instagram every day or two. Jeez.
At some point, probably summer or spring of 2017, I transitioned into more complex paintings. I went from using a 4000 by 4000 px canvas to 6000 by 6000 px (more than double the total area), which I’d often increase to dimensions of 7500 px or more. So my more recent stuff (past year) tends to take between 10 and 20 hours, which is why there’s a bit of time passing between each of em ;) I’ll spread out the work over a few days to weeks, recognizing that the picture may very well look awful until the final decile of progress. Is it normal for the first 17-18 out of 20 hours of work to produce garbage? Honestly it probably isn’t, but I’ve found this process works for me because nowadays I’m almost always stubborn enough to see a piece through to the end.
Don’t get me wrong. All of my favorite pieces from the past year had points where I really and truly wanted to stop and not deal with them anymore, because they seemed beyond repair. At such times, I found it delightful to revisit progress pictures of other pieces. Here’s what you can do: create a folder on your computer where you save pictures from each stage of making a painting. It’ll look a bit like this:
Keep them as reminders that you’ve started pieces before and had trouble with them, but still kept going. It’s also fun to see how your process evolves over the months or years (I include the date in the filenames for this reason).
One last thing: when you’re first learning to paint or draw, it’s so much easier to give up on your art than it is to really push yourself as far as you can possibly go, adding colors and shapes and details, altering values and proportions, and fixing little things all in service of making the picture more finished. Don’t take the easy way out. Once you have the mindset of working and reworking a picture until you are really and truly satisfied with it, you’ll find the harder way to be ultimately more fulfilling and enjoyable. If it’s any encouragement: for me, it stopped being the “harder way” a while back.

Not to critique evolution, but I would think orange and black stripes wouldn’t be as good for camouflage in a forest as, say, green and black would.
It turns out a lot of animals can’t see the difference between orange and green! Elephants, for instance, have dichromatic vision (two types of cones, rather than three like most humans.)
Check out this diagram from ResearchGate. It deals with the color vision of horses, who are also generally dichromatic. (I think, though I’m not sure, that zebras would have the same color vision as horses.) See how orange and green look to them?
Not to critique evolution but I think prey animals should be better at telling when their predator is dressed like a traffic cone.
It doesn’t matter what zebras see, because tigers are not native to Africa and do not naturally hunt zebra. Tigers are Asian and mostly hunt animals like deer, elk, and buffalo. These aren’t animals with great color vision. They don’t need to have it because they don’t eat fruit and so don’t need to know when the berry is ripe vs when it’s not. Good color vision is too expensive to have if you don’t need it. Deer put their vision stats in a wide field of vision that is sensitive to motion, low light capabilities, and possibly seeing UV light. They don’t have great color and lack a lot of acuity, but have a great sense of smell and good hearing. That’s way more useful if you’re prey. Deer see well in the blue end of the color spectrum and less well in the red. This makes sense because deer are most active in the dawn and dusk periods, when there is more blue in the light. Tigers are taking advantage of deer eyesight by being orange.
We see tigers are being obviously colored because tigers are fruit colored to our tree ape brains.
I don’t know what the best part of this is: implying that deer chose their attributes on a character sheet, or the fact that we get to see tiger colors because they look like a snack.
Ok but like, I think you underestimate just how well they blend in when actually in the environment. Like, just using tigers as an example.
or how about a leopard?
It’s called ‘disruptive colouration’ because the markings help to break up the animal’s outline against the grasses or rocks. And the rosettes on leopards and jaguars? Sun spots shining through the trees and leaves on the ground.
And this is how hard it is to spot them WITH colour vision. Now imagine the above images but with the limited coloured mentioned above?
I’m sorry but there is not an animal in that first leopard picture
Are you, sure about that?
“Tigers are fruit colored” is my new favorite phrase.
Pictures like this always make me laugh because the people who make them/like them/share them (which let’s face it is mostly men) like to pretend that they haven’t been doing this exact shit with all the “waves” of feminism. Ever since women started fighting for the right to vote, they painted those women as angry, selfish, violent people for having the audacity to demand to be treated like a human being. People who try to make pictures like this one just pretend that there wasn’t propaganda against women fighting for basic human rights, propaganda that is JUST LIKE THE ONE ABOVE. because it’s so much easier to paint an ugly picture of someone or something you hate instead of actually listening or try to understand. It’s so much easier to pretend you’re a better/smarter person because you don’t want things to change when your the one benefiting from it.
Reblogging for the comment
antifeminists have been repeating ad nauseam the same bullshit misogynist rhetoric for over a hundred years. call them out on it.
HOW TO BULLSHIT LEAFY TREES USING PHOTOSHOP: I use this to quickly make a believable outline of trees in backgrounds because no one’s got time to worry about leaves when you have a bunch of comic panels to draw!
1. Make a multiply layer over your sketch (OR use a normal layer and slap “no fill” on step two)
2. Add Layer Style>Stroke (black)
3. Use an interesting brush shape in white to create a chunky stroke outline
4. Erase excess! TADA A TREE
5. Add Simon (important) The brush I use is called “snappy” by Kyle Webster, it’s a tilt-sensitive triangle brush and I use it for nearly everything!

other snippets I thought were good:
some headcanons about pearlcatchers
some healers champion pearlcatcher pearls as ‘cures’ for memory loss, although most of these ‘remedies’ don’t work/have horrifying side affects
as an extension of the above, pearlcatchers have to be extremely vigilant about protecting their pearl bc thieves will try to steal them to sell at astronomically high prices
pearlcatcher graves, second only to imperials, are desecrated, grave-robbers looking for a quick payout (imperial corpses are often dug up and re-located in fear of emperors)
trusting someone else to hold your pearl is a huge leap of faith because you’re legit being trusted with all of their memories like wOAh
gijinka’d pearlcatchers have smaller pearls than their dragon counterparts, and usually incorporate them into jewelry that they wear 24/7 so that they can always protect them (think necklaces, bracelets, etc.)
bringing this back because i’m still mad about that update
