gender is a constant conversation between the internal and external, which is why i believe that art or music in some way is a requirement for discovery and solid settlement in one’s gender. sense and the sensual is everything. whenever i play RnB i can hear my gender bein’ played in the chords, the instruments. in gospel i hear it in the sound of the choir. i see it in mahogany walls on orange lamps, in contemporary african and african american art. the way the people are draw to emphasize the blackness of one’s person rather than a person of binary gender, the texture of and design of african prints, the semi-three dimensional look of african american painters, and the “ghetto” kind of digital art that speak of how worthy we are. hell, i see it in the way i type right now. my gender is in black books of fiction and non-fiction alike, the smell of wood in church and it’s colored tiles on the windows. I see it in velvet, brown, black, gold. i see it in my shea butter and cocoa butter and my cocoa radiant lotion and coconut oil. it’s in my culture that i’ve been able to find myself better than any place else. when i express my gender, i carry the culture with me all the same. that to me is neu black.

i made a flag for black transneus. i’ve been dealin’ with hella gender shit lately, and i want to start makin’ more creative/aesthetic stuff related to gender. specifically, transneutrality.

this flag is called the “neu black” flag, fittingly labelled after my tag of the same name. i think of it as bein’ very sophisticated, it definitely look it lol.

what the colors represent:

brown: our skin

gold: our neutrality and our culture

green: our relation to the earth

these colors all wave into each other in harmony, green bein’ at the center to represent that community is in our core. gold and brown are a very deliberate choices:

gold is huge in the african diaspora because of its luxury and beauty. it’s also very neutral as it’s unisex. there’s an inherent beauty in our culture, and so i’m sure there’s an inherent beauty in our neutrality. here, blackness and neutrality cannot be separated.

brown is to represent our skin. whatever (neutral) presentations we choose for ourselves, it shall be based on a deep appreciation for the color of our skin. i chose a darker shade of brown to honor our darkskin siblin’s first and foremost, and it was the definin’ factor in how i adjusted the hue and shades of colors. i think it’s what made the flag so beautiful in the first place.

i believe we deserve something nice, something based off of earthy, soothin’ colors that appear in many black aesthetics across the diaspora.

i want all three of these factors to be a big component of how i present black neutrality, and anyone may use it.

I hate that there's no room for nonbinary people in media. When a character's gender is "ambiguous" (neither seen as masculine nor feminine) and solely referred to with neutral terms such as "they/them" and person, individual, etc, people can't stand that. They can't stand the idea that a nonbinary person wouldn't want to be a boy or girl, isn't a boy or a girl. They have to be a girlthing or a boything (why are all nonbinary people things? Why is it never girlenby or boyenby?), they have to be transfem or transmasc. When they're put into relationships, they have to be either lesbian or gay. Nobody can be cenelian or enbian or diamoric or gai or strayt or trixic or toric. That doesn't exist.

I'm sick of it. I'm sick of seeing nonbinarity be shoved into category after category after category when the whole point of being nonbinary is that we want to opt out.

saw a twitter post about how a non-binary person was bothered by people sayin’ “they is” instead of “they are” and it’s definitely a reason why i created this blog and the blacknbculture blog. no matter how pro-black or anti-racism a white nigga will be they will always find some way to criticize “ghetto”, “trashy”, or “lazy” ways of speakin’ and bein’.

i cannot speak my dialect around white without havin’ to assimilate unless i want people to mock me or just laugh at everything i say, even if i’m actually mad. other times, i just feel like i come off as rude to white people. in english i see examples of my native dialect be used as a “incorrect examples” of Real English. the reason i write in my dialect is so i don’t lose it bein’ surrounded by so many white people who only tolerate me as long as i throw my culture away. usin’ “is” instead of “are” in African American English (AAE) is the most common feature in the dialect i’d argue it’s part of what make it so distinct, along with the accent as well. i will not be fooled by white people bothered by grammar, cause 99% it’s racism they probably don’t even know of.

so, i will be sayin’ “they is”, actually. and i’ll say it proudly.

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2025.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

i know people feel weird about saying 'nonbinary people are nonbinary' because it's grammatically clumsy at first glance and hit the "and nonbinary people are valid" instead because that isn't but also nonbinary people are nonbinary. pretty essentially. trans men are men, trans women are women, and nonbinary people are nonbinary. and they aren't (universally) 'too powerful to be contained by the gender binary', they aren't (universally) 'creatures', they aren't (universally) 'incomprehensible'. why would you feel weird about saying 'nonbinary' when it fulfills the same purpose as these other phrases?

Black multigender anon, I literally had a similar experience with a coworker in college. I'm intergender, transneutral, and sometimes agender!

I tried to explain my one/oneself pronouns and gender to my coworkers one time in college... One of the coworkers having a particularly difficult time went "Oh, you're just the gray shirt emoji!"

I mean, it really worked for her! She truly locked in and didn't misgender me for the rest of the year.

Shout out to the gray/orange shirt emoji. Really doing wonders for us, haha!!
