for those moaning about how max didn't do a post or anything. max and daniels friendship has never been for public consumption. max and daniels friendship is about the small tidbits about how max texted daniel a photo of him driving dale earnhardt's car smiling from ear to ear. it's about how daniel knew that one of max's cats escaped. it's about how when everyone was piling up on daniel, max reached out directly to ask if he was ok. it's about max taking the time to read daniels writing mid-livestream and then leaving to process it. it's max inviting daniel to play padel. it's daniel silently, without communication, helping max out as his last act on the track.

you're so used to friendships that are manufactured to serve a PR team, so many friendships in f1 that are as deep as "who's jet are we taking this week", so many that are just casual acquaintances playing it up for increased brand awareness. the real friendship here is the person who was glued to someone realizing they are about to be fired in slow motion over a weekend. it's holding the umbrella so they don't get wet while you're out in the downpour. it's the shutting down of the implication that you're not one of the greatest. it's the million small moments that are not for the public, but for you and for that one person to know

I think Daniel became an easy punching bag for this sport — an easy thing to toss out and distract and he would do it smiling. Because he was so authentic and sweet and kind in spite of it all, no one else generated as much love and as much animosity that seemed…almost parasocial. I have been in sports fandoms for ages, and even then I have never felt like this for any other athlete. And Daniel is arguably the richest athlete. (I stan cricketers and they are paid in peanuts btw). But I cried and cried and still cry for him even yet.

I both have hope and no hope. Mostly no hope. But I think of all the retired drivers, Daniel is the least likely to hold grudges and the most likely to find success elsewhere entirely. Hollywood would gobble him up if he wanted it. He’s already an Aussie legend. He’s loved. He’s loved by many.

I hope he enjoys every butterfly there is. And F1 will be poorer for losing him like this.

It's just so absolutely crazy how close Max and Daniel got despite the things that happened when they were teammates. Max is essentially the reason Daniel left and his career went spiralling. Max is the one who came in and became the golden child when Daniel was the WDC hope after Vettel. Max who watched Daniel with heart eyes from day 1. Daniel who taught Max they can be teammates and friends at the same time. And he left and they missed each other, went on vacations, and introduced each other to their friends circle, who watched one rise and rise, and the other struggle. And it all, ALL, comes down to "if it's not me, I'm glad it's him" and "thank you, Daniel" ALWAYS
