Plant of the Day Saturday 10 May 2014
In this local garden at Wickham Bishops in Essex the lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis proves it has a rhizomatous stem as it follows the gaps in the paving! The plant will grow in semi or full shade and appreciates a moist root run. After flowering there are red berries. So sorry the blog does not do scent as this was amazing and must waft into the house.
I really visited to see the famous 250 foot long wisteria more of that tomorrow…

The Jeweled Skeletons were originally found in catacombs beneath Rome in 1578, and distributed as replacements under the belief they were Christian martyrs to churches that had lost their saint relics in the Reformation. However, for most, their identities were not known. The receiving churches then spent years covering the revered skeletal strangers with jewels and golden clothing, even filling their eye sockets and sometimes adorning their teeth with finery. Yet when the Enlightenment came around they became a little embarrassing for the sheer amount of money and excess they represented, and many were hidden away or disappeared. Koudounaris tracked down the dead survivors. [ x ] [ x ] [ x ]

You know what doesn’t fuck around?
Australian children’s books on animals
The children’s TV series Peppa Pig ran an episode in 2012 that incited an Australian viewer complaint; the viewer said that the episode’s content was inappropriate for an Australian audience because it said that spiders were not to be feared.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation thought about it a bit, agreed, and ordered it removed from online access as well as banning it from ever being shown in Australia again.
I want us to make each other better.
