[ ROUTE 3. | birthday angst drabble ??? ]

when he finally collapses into the warmth of his bed, it’s 3:27 AM. his cap is tossed to the corner of the room as his other hand’s fingers trudge upwards to his hairline; grasping at bangs that’s now just a little too long, trying to catch his breath as he dragged the night air into his lungs.

he’s... not sure why he’d ran home. the distance from the bus stop to his house, it wasn’t that far -- but he’s not sure why the walk had picked up into a jog, the jog into a run, the run into pure desperation; maybe he was literally trying to run away, or maybe he was just homesick, or maybe he himself was just crying for the endorphin in his veins and nerves. maybe he just wanted to get away from the atmosphere that’d been choked tight with murder, maybe after a month of spying, he’d just had enough of the unfamiliar. 

maybe he was trying to just get away from what he did.

the scent of his room is familiar as the scent of roses, of latex, of the sharp smell of metal cards -- familiar as coins flipped between fingers, familiar and warm as laughter. but-- is there a disconnect? was this what he was forcing himself to feel? that he was still alright, still normal -- maybe he was just trying to convince himself, and this was a worthless argument against the truth -- the truth that he might as well be a foreigner to his own daily life now, with how used he was now to blood and staying in the shadows. the details of being human are now lost on him; soft touches and smiles no longer seem genuine. in his world, all mistakes are calculated, in the Syndicate, even more so -- he feels like he’d been forced into a house called systematic elimination and he’d rationalized it by calling it home. 

disconnect had always been something he’d felt, but in the Syndicate’s hands, it’d only taken a month for that gap to widen.

his hands finally find his phone, one that’d been turned off for a month -- for his friends: his mother had called him to LA, had been the excuse, so don’t expect to be in touch with him. june’d been long as it had been short -- somehow it simultaneously managed to drag on as well as it’d gone by in a blink of an eye. his classmates had been envious that he’d taken a month off school. at the time, kaito’d given them a mock salute and rubbed it in their faces.

regardless of his warnings that he won’t be available, there’s a bunch of messages waiting for him -- they pop up one after another at rapid speeds as the phone configures itself, before settling down; then come the facebook timeline posts.

[ txt ] happy birthday, kuroba [ txt ] birth [ txt ] HBD ! I hope you’re having a safe trip, kuroba-kun ~ 

... it’s a little surrealistic, all of this. maybe he was in one of dali’s paintings, the one with the melting clock; his own mental state seemed to match it.

the date -- June 29th-- stares accusingly at him.

he turns the phone screen off. 

looks like he’d missed his birthday - and father’s day too-- his arm comes to cover his eyes. dates had blurred, and perhaps this was the syndicate’s own ploy -- to whittle him down to another gear in the machine, barring him from the personal. in the Syndicate’s eyes, no longer was Kuroba Kaito meant to exist, after all. his own name feels like a stranger, and somehow, he still feels like he should be called applejack. 

of course he shouldn’t be called such a thing, he tells himself, even as he puts the phone on his bedside desk then moving the curl into the blankets -- 

guess he was another year older now. happy 17th.

It seems unlikely that SO many people would get SO lost, and yet, here you all are.

Goodness gracious. I can’t even begin to say everything I should, but the bottom line I’ll stick with is thank you guys so much. I’m the queen of spotty activity and a meme mom for the ages, so I count my blessings that even some of you are willing to put up with me, let alone the number of real friendships which have been borne out of my time with Mari. And holy shit!! thank you!! for supporting my trash girl; queen of the garbage! honestly, when I was first making Ri, I never expected her to take off– I was pretty resigned from roleplaying after some of my long-time writing partners moved on from the scene, and made my sweet lavender girl on a whim (like all of my other daughters, cough cough). I could never have anticipated how much she would mean to me, and the connections she would open up.

So thank you all, really. You’re the reason I’ve kept coming back, and I don’t intend on going anywhere anytime soon.

…but. I do have some favorites– I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I don’t, y’all know anyways– so I’m gonna take a few seconds to talk about them and then pour the rest of my love out in some shortlists.

                     As I’ve voiced before, including recently, and will continue to: you are… the sunshine in my days. Any time I see you on, or see you in my activity, I’m just filled with such a pure joy; like, I can count on one hand the number of people whom just the thought of can make me smile, and you’re definitely one of them. Jamie, too, is one of the most delightful characters I’ve ever met, and to his credit, he handles Mari with more grace than many (even if it comes at the cost of some potent anxiety).                 WOW??? ME??? LOVE BEAR??? never heard that one before, but there’s no way I could make one of these without some of this classic Bird’s Extremely Gay Feels for Bear™ so you’re just gonna have to deal with it. To be simple about it, you’re… one of my best friends; bar none, not “from tumblr” or “from [x]” you just are; I usually keep really small friend groups, and you’re absolutely on the same level with the boys I drink and play games with– I’d have taken your ass to town in Catan numerous times by now if it weren’t for the distance, but that’s the only difference. And I know I say it a lot but you really do inspire me. Your love and dedication to your characters, your consistency, your humor– I love and respect you so much. Goddamn did Wylan and Mari sneak up on me. 

From our businessy chats from the start, I’d never have known just how special these two would grow to become (leave Wy and Emké’s situation out of it until another day because I can only gush so much). It’s the greatest relationship I’ve ever had the privilege to write on any of my characters, and I think about them all the time. I’m so blessed to have them, and you, in my life, and I don’t intend to let you forget it.

“...” Makes sense that he’s coveted by everyone. Emi, you and these detectives need a life, he considers saying, but keeps the statement to himself-- they were empty words, and he didn't trade in insincerity. Pursue, huh?

... which she seems to be falling back onto right now, so he takes a step back, hands up, placating.
